Played through this in ~6-10 hours (mapped it which slowed me down, so not 100% sure on actual playtime). The two nice things I can say about it: it has decent animations and it's free of major annoying/breaking bugs. And I respect the effort it takes to actually deliver a solid bug-free game with hours of playtime & decent- (if not high-) -quality graphics & music. That said, you are better off buying a different game. Kingdom Shell comes to mind for similar art style, but with much more interesting game systems, level design, and plot. The level design is painfully bland. No interesting jumping sequences or platforming at all, *lots* of empty rooms; lots of spikes that just have floors over them so they're not even a threat... And then the occasional blind jump or "maybe I can make this oh wait nope it's also instant death." I can say honestly this has the worst level design of any metroidvania game I've ever played, including mid-tier free indie and/or jam ones like EYES. Enemy variety was also lackluster, with basically variations on exactly two enemy designs (melee fighter or ranged attacker) both of which were easy to beat. Enemy movement was also dull: patrol on flat terrain; can't even handle slopes. I understand from a technical standpoint why this happened, but it's not fun to play. At least the character controls well (a common pitfall in other mid/bad games), but with no animation cancelling, combat was a slog. Also, you get a parry, but some attacks aren't parryable and there's absolutely no indication of which. Upgrades/charms system was very basic, with lots of repeats and only a few things to improve (+ attack, + defense, +gold drops, + health regen). Zero interesting tradeoffs or alternate playstyles enabled. Only two unlockable abilities, and they're... wait for it... air dash and double jump! The two most generic possible abilities one could imagine. As already mentioned, zero creative level design even pushes these abilities at all. It's 2025 and I don't want to ever play another metroidvania that gives me vanilla double-jump as an ability, let alone where that's one of only two abilities to unlock. In terms of exploration, the room placement was straightforward & boring, with only 1 path forward for a large part of the game, and no real rewards for exploring side paths (since charms were so underwhelming). I only collected 11/12 Goldshade Lilies, and speculate that the 12th might unlock a better ending, but did NOT have the patience to go wall-bashing around the map to find the 12th. As indicated on the map, I think I found of 5 secrets. Yup, that's right, 5 secrets in the whole game. The plot was also extremely generic + disjointed. The reason for your epic quest turns out not to matter or get resolved at all. Each area is another "oh no monsters! Please save us" quest. There are no plot reveals because the plot has nothing to reveal. Despite my harsh criticism and suggestion that others not buy this game, I'm not interested in a refund, and I don't mind the ~10 bucks I spent on this. I understand having done some hobby dev stuff myself that a lot of work went into this, and delivering a solid non-broken experience with decent art is worth something. I don't begrudge the dev making a modest amount of money from this by people who are curious and want to try it out. Heck, I'm glad to have a map in my collection that's solidly mediocre in terms of design so I can try to quantify the differences between this and better games. But I can't in good faith encourage anyone to buy this when there are so many better options out there, including free ones. Even Chasm, which I didn't really like that much and which was also somewhat boring, was better than this. And please, if you're considering buying this but haven't yet played Cave Story, go do that first. It's free and 1000x better.
I get no joy in recommending against Awita, but it feels more like a bare-bones metroidvania template than a complete product. To get positives out of the way – it looks, sounds and plays alright, and is mostly bug-free, though almost all aspects of the presentation come from various asset packs, and the few original pieces of art, like the title and the pause screens, are of mid quality. As for the rest – nothing feels finished! Most rooms are empty and devoid of any distinguishing landmarks, and map overall is tiny and almost entirely linear from start to finish. Sometimes you will enter a room that's supposed to be a boss lair or a throne room, but it looks exactly like all others, with a lonely enemy or an NPC slapped in the middle of it. Moreover, there are only two basic mobility upgrades to find – a double-jump and an air-dash, and half a dozen minor passive buffs that can only be equipped 3 at a time. All other collectibles have zero impact on gameplay and are only there for achievement hunters. The story is absolute throw-away nonsense that might as well not be there, and ends as abruptly as it begins. Nothing even remotely interesting happens for two hours, and the final boss comes out of nowhere, once again inside an ordinary room! I generally don't mind shorter experiences. I don't even mind such games costing more if clear effort and passion were put into them. However, Awita has neither, and so isn't even remotely worth the asking price!
Uhh.. I don't want to bash on a small studio too harshly. However, this is why we got reviews. 2 hour game if you speed run it. Maybe less. Not enough items to have a rarity of some sort. There is an item that increases better loot but overall, there are only like 10 items. Nothing fascinating drops. The ending of the game is... odd. I really didn't understand it. Wish there was more variety other than one weapon. I would say just maybe find another game. :/
Success, strength and morale to the developer.
A cute, 2-4 hour mini metroidvania that can be beaten in a single sitting. Absolutely gorgeous art and animations, and a streamlined map that doesn't feel daunting to explore if all you want is a short game to chill out with. Ran well and most elements felt polished, but sometimes feels like my inputs weren't registering when they should be. Difficulty might feel steep at first, but it turns out to be quite forgiving.
Played on OG 512 Steam Deck without issues. Game has been updated since I played it and even without those I enjoyed my time with this fun game. It’s a good filler game and worth the price. I Liked this game!
Game is short. Probably 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Clean animations and visuals, good music, simple but clean combat. Wish parry was used a bit more an enemies had a bit more variation in combat, but overall I enjoyed the experience. Quite surprised after seeing (I believe) a one person development.
