8.5/10 – A Vibrant, Nostalgic Turn-Based Strategy Gem A lovely strategy game reminiscent of XCOM, but with a charming late 90s/early 2000s "Tropico" setting. The game leans into its era with a playful, almost caricatured presentation, packed with nostalgic nods (some modern than others). What surprised me most was how colourful and vibrant the game is, far more lively than the trailers suggested. There is a lot of variety in the strategies you can employ with your mercenary squad, in addition to a light resource management layer. (mercs’ kits, ammo and geographic management) The map, which initially seem small, is actually large, with each tile featuring its own unique biome/zone. The quippy mercs, NPCs and encounters bring the world to life, creating an environment that feels alive and engaging. If you’re a fan of XCOM like games with personality, this one is worth a try!

Really great XCOM-style turn based shooter with light stealth mechanics. It's a good story but the best part are the mercs, who have great personalities. The humor is the raunchy, campy action movie of the 1980s style. Fidel absolutely steals the show, though, definitely pick him if you can. I liked the mods, especially the one that adds chance to hit. All the side missions are fun and interesting with a lot of variety. I managed to stretch it to 60+ hours but I could have probably finished it earlier. Overall, one of my favorite turn based games.

A must buy if not for you then for the pizza you never bought your dog or cat or for the seed you never fed those always starving wild birds. I didn’t play the previous parts of the franchise, so this will be a review of the game ‘as it is’. I don’t think there are things about the game that I like. Probably the biggest trap the game stumbled into is being an open world game- if it was ‘from a mission to a mission’ without all that map travelling, quests and open world mechanics, it would be a ball. You practically are moving from a unique hub A to unique hub B through locations that are rendered as pretty the same. Building camps and training militia because some random enemy squad can spawn on the other side of the map and invade to retake is just tedious. This and all other aspects serve only to make the game artificially longer. The gunplay is fun but outside of a few instances where you are jumped by enemies, the meta seems to be 2 snipers taking out everything while the rest sweeps what the duo could not. I don’t think there was even once a reason to fight with melee and try to sneak on the enemy (is that even possible?). Your mercs are also on the contract which has its termination date you can extend. So the open world and extension is the problem- you will be doing a lot of things on the map that will take time, which will force you to constantly renew contracts: more busy work. Did I mention your regular enemies sound as if they were voiced by a single guy? The same line shouted at you in 100 locations starts to irritate fast.

Fantastic game with a bunch of memorable characters. Excellent tactics with good humor and a compelling storyline. Highly recommend mods too make it even better
Not as good as JA 2 Wildfire, but it's okay
If you liked JA and JA2, you'll love this... excellent addition to a much missed genre.
