I went from "Don't have a feel for this type of thing" to "OK, might just give it a try", then "Well, there's something in the game", and now, I play it everyday.
Could've been really good, but you can see from the start how bad the RNG is. Your guys with bolt rifles and high accuracy/proficiency in this same weapon seem to have a 1/3 chance to hit enemies whom from the distance you just missed will be able to sprint forward and have a 1/2 chance to hit you with a pistol.
5/10 From someone, who played the original JA back in the day and love this genre in general: this game COULD have been great. Pro: - Great tactical combat - The bits of pieces of information you can gather, and side quests and tasks are really interesting, and gives the game real flavor - Liked the idea of the map and the strategic aspect of the game - Liked how you can do different tasks to make outposts weaker - Quite lot of different classes and skills - Day/night cycles and different weather conditions adds additional layer to tactics Meh: - Limited inventory space (there are characters who have 4 pieces of space only. REALLY?) - The whole item management in general: your characters have limited inventory space, so you need to leave stuff in stash of each map square. You left something important back at the other side of the map? Bad luck, you need to go back - Things not just "teleporting", they're arriving on boats. Hired a new merc? Need to wait a few days to arrive at a choosen port. Bought some ammunition? Need to wait a few days, and travel to the choosen port. Realistic, but not fun - The map is HUGE. I knew the first time I saw it that I won't be able to finish this game, as it felt like after 50-60 hours, I'll still be just at halfway there, with characters already maxed out Con: - I hate this "dynamic" map: enemies move around on the map, constantly making weapon/diamond runs, taking back squares, attacking cities/outposts, which is quite frustrating alone, but - You can move around the map REALLY slowly. Like, it could take HALF A DAY to move from one square to another, so you need to plan meticolously where you go next - The game is difficult. Even for a "veteran" like me, the game is really difficult even on the lowest settings. I've finally gave up at a "boss", who was ridicolously beefy and could kill my soldiers with one shot. Of course, I could just leave it there, as it was for some side quest, but it felt unfair TL;DR: great tactical game with "realistic" elements, which makes the game unfun. Also, really difficult
I'm having a ball with this game. Old Jagged Alliance (1) player.
Finding a tactical turn-based game that doesn't immediately make me want to go play Xcom 2 is hard, but Jagged Alliance 3 kept me onboard to the end. The aiming mechanic is actually a good idea, allowing you to spend more action points to have better odds of hitting. There is some good weapon modification, and the combat is great. On top of all the other positives, their are dozens of characters that either have unique ideas or are trying to hit a very specific trope, which this game really leans into the the 80' and 90' action hero themes. They have very interesting interactions throughout the game, and some of them are legitimately funny. The biggest issues that I had with the game is that it became a little tedious with the constant patrols that the enemy factions would send out. Towards the end of the game, the last base was sending one out way to frequently and it just dragged the game out. I did enjoy my time with the game overall, so definitely check this one out if turn-based tacticals are your type of game.
Maybe I'm just not good at this type of game (which is definitely not true, if this game is considered like XCOM or Age of Wonders), but I found this game maddeningly inconsistent. Enemy cover completely shields them from all attacks, but your cover? Sorry, not a thing. Also, the game gives you no indication of your shot success percentage, other than the character saying "maybe I can hit that" or "I can't hit that", but neither have any real difference, as far as I can tell. The game also makes a big deal out of stealth kills being a thing, but every squad is filled with 4+ enemies who are constantly looking at each other, making it so that you can never pick off anyone without them noticing. I suspect that the game gets better (it has too), but I'm not willing to spend more time save scumming a mission only to get eviscerated by missing every shot.
I finished this game. About half way through it I just got fed up and sped ran the final stage. The game is too long, the stages are annoying, the camera UI and everything fight you into an unfun gameplay. I loved JA2 and BIA and this was a massive let down for me. I'm glad I did not buy it at launch or for co-op play. I am never playing it again. Buy at your own peril.
