Fantastic game, I bought a few years ago and each year I would save up some money and wait for sales, which were very helpful both via Steam and the Il2 website. There developers were pretty helpful at responding to to any issues I had setting up a DServer so i could play Coop via Pat Wilsons Campaign Generator (Highley Recommended). Now the base itself is okay but if you wait for sales and get DLC like Moscow, Bodenplatte, Kuban, Normandy and Leningrad and Odessa it is very much worth it as you can fly from 1941 to 1945 via Germany mainly. For Soviets your don't get 1944-45 experience but online servers do simulate late war air battles in Germany for Soviets. Overall the planes are very detailed, they have character and pros and cons. Some planes (Bf-109) you'll come to master quick and others may take a bit longer but thats what makes it fun. You can fly with limited assists or no assists, i prefer to fly with auto mix but everything is under my control, its fun tbh managing your temps and speed is rather fun and flying with no HUD is highly recommended as it makes you feel as a pilot should. Now the career mode is my favorite, it allows you to fly as a new pilot with a Squadron/Staffel/Эскадрилья. Its immersive, you get to fly along side pilots who have a record also. You have to move airfield also following the battle, its very fun. Playing a German campaign in Unternehmen Taifun is brilliant. You see smoke, panzers and battles raging below. Its makes your see that your in a very large battle and your just a small cog in a huge machine. I have 3 careers at the moment all are rather fun, a German one with LG 2 in Unternehmen Taifun, a Canadian one and a Polish one in 308 "City of Krakow" Sqn prior to Normandy invasion. It simulates the build up very well in Circus, Rodeo, Rhubarb and Ramrod missions for the Operation Overlord build up. details like this matter to me and many history fans will be impressed by this. I have one draw back for career it would be good to see squadron pilot names to be accurate, for example. Polish/Czechslovak Squadrons should have pilot names of that countries origin, it would be a good touch. The history of each unit could be more expansive as there are a few units in game with no history description's, listing famous pilots also of that unit would be a great touch. Now plane models seem very good imo, compared to other so called simulator's plane act as they should in damage models. Il2 formation flying towards your frontlines? should be simple interception right? most of the time it ain't. Luftwaffe nicknamed the Il2 "Betonflugzeug" meaning concrete plane, many pilots spoke how hard it was to shoot down, there were certain areas to strike on the aircraft like the oil radiator on the underbelly. Accuracy like this is done well, Il2's fly in the formations they were taught too very well in game. Damage model's on many bomber aircraft is done well, they don't just break up they most of the time can take damage, so you need to be accurate. Overall not to many issues with the damage model. Issues I do have with the game is it should be easier to play with friends in Coop. I had to do some magic with ports but i got there in the end thanks to very helpful guides on the Il2 forum, the community seems very helpful. I'm not sure if this will be easier in Il2 Korea but i'm very hopeful for this, the guides also for the planes via cockpit viewer look great. This is one think this game could updated with but my learning side enjoys picking up a book on Bf 109 or Spitfire Mk. IX and learning from accounts of pilots who flew them, its fun but a book list is needed if you want to understand some of these aircraft i'm yet to fly them all but overall Im in love with the P-51, a beast to fly and very well done, the sound of the Packard V-1650 Merlin engine is a nice feeling added with the flames coming out of her when at full WEP. Overall is great detail so far. AI i have had not too many issues with but i know some player have seen odd things, for me no issues. Now i flew Flying Circus briefly but i'm not that clued up on The Great War but its very expensive however there was a sale on there website, it look like it has the same detail with a huge map thats a work of art in itself. I may get this again in the future when i have more time and understand air warfare in The Great War better. Only take this review for my perception of IL2 Great Battle's WW2/Great Patriotic War battle's. Im a huge fan of this game and since i play far more with friends via Coop on PWCG is been a blast. Pro's: Detailed Career mode Detailed planes models Detailed Map's (very big, I did a 70 minute flight from England (RAF Deanland) to France (Isigny, Normandy) Customer Service are quick to respond via there website, all round good people. Con's: If game is not on sale it can be pricey (Wait for sales, dont rush into buying and watch Youtuber's like Wolfpack he helped showing off some of the DLC) Coop (not easy to set Coop up and no 2 individual server's for just you and a friend to play together but plenty of servers to join via Dogfight, I play Coop now via Port Forwarding and use PWCG) What I hope for: Drop tank's (they are in game but only via fuel not seen as a actual add on) More Detailed Unit Histories including famous pilot's Cockpit viewer to help newer player's Late war Poland or Hungary maps for Great Patriotic War Accurate Squadron Pilot names (Polish/Czechslovak/Italian/Finnish/Spainish/French)
The price is so stupid the game doesn’t offer much you only get two tanks that aren’t even modeled and 10 planes that aren’t even that good or cool and some DLC’s are only available if you buy the other packs first it’s stupid please add more free planes this game is mid I mean I like it but the prices are way to high I know simulators better than this game with more free planes IL-2 1946 was better you had more planes please guys add more free planes
probably the best combat flight sim available in the market as of right now, but it suffers from the outdated graphics engine, especially when it comes to rendering aircraft against the ground or at a distance there's instances where an aircraft will render out of view unless you zoom in due to some weird LOD shenanigans, and although i like the game, it's not enjoyable being in the middle of a fight and suddendly losing track of the target because they went over a city or trees, making their aircraft basically invisible there are settings that you can use to reduce the effect of this, but having to turn down my gamma and play at the lowest graphic settings possible just so i can actually see other planes is not worth it for me
This is the preeminent WW2 combat flight simulator. If coming from War Thunder, and you’re considering this, this is what you have been missing out on in terms of fidelity. This title, ‘Battle of Stalingrad,’ is the foundational game in the Great Battles series. Access to other campaigns, such as ‘Battle of Normandy,’ is locked unless you have this base game. The maps are hugely expansive and there are a variety of campaigns/scenarios to choose from if you purchase those separately. The in-built career mode is excellent (although sometimes quite repetitive) and allows you to choose from a variety of historical Allied and Axis squadrons across different theatres (though only Stalingrad in this game alone). Pacing is optional - you can choose to fly every day of the campaign or jump between intermittent periods. One appalling oversight, however, is that if you die and accidentally choose to leave the mission instead of replaying it, the career mode for that profile/pilot ends and everything you’ve done is for nothing. It’s a serious issue that needs to be corrected, and in the meantime, vigilance of this issue is required on mission end menus. The AI is superb and makes use of the characteristics of their aircraft accurately, the flight modelling is very well done. I would say, however, that the AI does not trim for level flight and instead ‘throttle-jockeys’ which is a major thumbs down on the AI side of things. Overall, this game is great in single player. Multiplayer does exist, but servers are mostly joined on the weekends/during holiday seasons. Buy this game (and all its DLC) on sale. During the seasonal sales you can get everything for around £250 - £300. This game is a blast to play. However, there is a steep learning curve and every aircraft has its own flight modelling that you must be attentive to. If you want WW2 combat flight sim done properly, accurately, and realistically, then you have come to the right place.
#5: License key not activated. I literally can't even play the game, even offline mode isn't available. I literally bought the game.
