>be me with little flight experience >make this your first flight sim in ~2 decades because you played a demo of the original game back then >fly a bomber mission for the russians >get both engines damaged >have the 1st engine fail on your way back home >nurse your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ home with one damaged engine for over 30 minutes >screw up your landing approach 2 times >somehow not crash the plane >finally make a safe landing This one mission had more thrill and unexpected turns than some entire games.
I dont know what I bought but definetly it is not a game. Well it is a game with everything lock out below multiple DLC. Pure Money grab
**The following content has been flagged as misinformation** The base game is a premium demo with almost no content **end misinformation** To give my opinion instead with no misinfo: the price is absolutely shameful with all of the dlc, the forums and modding forums shrug and say just buy it all on sale. The game flat out sucks. It was outdated when it released, and was just a slap to the idiots like me who bought cliffs of dover originally, only uncs understand. They let their devs work on Blitz and gave it to prev owners for free, but I will have to pony up more than the base game to play those assets in this game, the only one with modding community. There is really not enough here to just play sp and get anything out of it if youve played the other IL-2 games before it. The campaign mods are a massive pain in the ass without the dlc. This base game from 2014 that, on sale, costs as much as Vampire Crawlers. What was I thinking.
As a person new to these kind of games I couldn't find any tutorial and everything is locked behind DLC. Not worth it if you are a casual gamer. The flying, visually, is pretty cool in VR.
Cash grab garbage. If you feel it's worth hundreds of dollars, as you get little access to the game without grabbing up a ton of DLC's, go hard I guess lol.
It's hard to care about the loss of my squadmates when the portrait generator insists on constructing literal abominations/people as they appear in dreams. RIP squadmate Spanke, who resembled what I can only describe as a wax sculpture of Joe Rogan left in a hot car.
Now that the developers have listened to the players and reversed their decision to make the game online only I can leave a positive review without any qualms. It's a great game and if you're into planes, sims, WW2 and/or history you will sink many hours into this one. The monetization scheme is a nightmare at first sight, but considering how steep the learning curve is, the base game alone will provide many hours of fun. Additionally, the game gets periodically discounted up to 85% so it ultimately does not end up being egregiously expensive. You don't need to buy scripted campaigns as you can find some online for free and I have to say that the career mode is quite satisfying. Earning medals, avoiding death and capture, progressing to squadron commander, watching your men fly, die and get replaced. Dogfighting is REALLY exhilarating and I mean it, I have not felt such consistent excitement while playing any other game. Maneuvering to line up a perfect shot makes my heart pound and knees tremble, it is a veritable adrenaline rush every session. Sadly, I only use head tracking via a webcam, supposedly the game is even better in VR. Cockpits and plane models are beautiful but landscape graphics are a bit dated. Flight model is awesome. Definitely buy a joystick for this one and set up some cheap solution for head tracking. If you're like me and you already tried stuff like War Thunder but it didn't work out, IL 2: Great Battles will surely scratch that itch.
Il2 is one of those games that you need to practice. Practice, Practice, Practice. And just when you think you may just be ok, the AI, or a teammate, will RAM into you, or pop a 20mm through your head and make you cry. It is an awesome game. Do yourself a favour, save some moola and get a HOTAS and at least TrackIR. the difference will blow your mind
