Great flight model, nice controls, awesome feeling. Buuuuut you have to pay for DLC, otherwise your experience will be really poor.
I spent more time figuring out the controls than actually playing the game. Nowhere does it say that this is a game that REQUIRES a flight stick. Playing with your mouse feels like trying to lift an icecube out of water with a wet rag. it fights you. Then there isnt a quick setup for keys. pitch alone has like 50 entries all for different things. So unless you are prepared to spend a couple hours figuring out the controls and having a guide open for all of it dont waste your time. What a waste of money.
This is the preeminent WW2 combat flight simulator. If coming from War Thunder, and you’re considering this, this is what you have been missing out on in terms of fidelity. This title, ‘Battle of Stalingrad,’ is the foundational game in the Great Battles series. Access to other campaigns, such as ‘Battle of Normandy,’ is locked unless you have this base game. The maps are hugely expansive and there are a variety of campaigns/scenarios to choose from if you purchase those separately. The in-built career mode is excellent (although sometimes quite repetitive) and allows you to choose from a variety of historical Allied and Axis squadrons across different theatres (though only Stalingrad in this game alone). Pacing is optional - you can choose to fly every day of the campaign or jump between intermittent periods. One appalling oversight, however, is that if you die and accidentally choose to leave the mission instead of replaying it, the career mode for that profile/pilot ends and everything you’ve done is for nothing. It’s a serious issue that needs to be corrected, and in the meantime, vigilance of this issue is required on mission end menus. The AI is superb and makes use of the characteristics of their aircraft accurately, the flight modelling is very well done. I would say, however, that the AI does not trim for level flight and instead ‘throttle-jockeys’ which is a major thumbs down on the AI side of things. Overall, this game is great in single player. Multiplayer does exist, but servers are mostly joined on the weekends/during holiday seasons. Buy this game (and all its DLC) on sale. During the seasonal sales you can get everything for around £250 - £300. This game is a blast to play. However, there is a steep learning curve and every aircraft has its own flight modelling that you must be attentive to. If you want WW2 combat flight sim done properly, accurately, and realistically, then you have come to the right place.
#5: License key not activated. I literally can't even play the game, even offline mode isn't available. I literally bought the game.
As a game it's just not very good. Career missions are autogenerated and suck so much. I can't imagine anyone playtested this. Like, you'll get a mission, intercept recon plane or some such. OK, great. The recon plane is flying at 5k and you start on the ground in a Lagg3 or Yak1. There ain't no way you are catching up to that plane, and will just be chasing it for an hour before you give up. It's just so frustrating, but hey, at least in this mission you had something to do. In other missions that are generated you just escort some bombers for an hour without ANYTHING HAPPENING. And this is not a one-time thing, it happens all the time. There is time acceleration so you can fast forward and hope for some action, but it maxes out at 8x which is paaaiinnnfffulllyyy slow. Even with 8x you're still sitting in front of your screen for half an hour hoping something will happen. And you better hope that the autopilot doesn't crash into a friendly plane, which happens way too often. It's just such a MASSIVE waste of time.
Arguably the best WWII flight sim available right now. Detailed damage models, realistic flight controls and a dynamic career mode that can be a lot of fun. Yes, they're going to nickel and dime you on every DLC, and the campaigns being an additional ten bucks is super annoying. But IL-2's main competitors are DCS and War Thunder, and even after you buy a DLC or two, IL-2 is still just a better value. Also, the sales on steam bring that cost down a lot.
Screw you 1C Game Studios. Screw you vigorously and without mercy. Do NOT waste your money on these GREEDY morons. If you purchase any base version you will immediately be disappointed to learn you can't play all of the content. That's right, you cannot play the entire game unless you also purchase ALL of the DLC's. The game actively tells you "you can't fly this mission because you don't have the plane". Guess where the plane is, it's in a DLC you don't have. For most games, DLC is an add-on to the already complete experience. Not here, no no no. DLC's here are meant to fill the gaps in the Base game. Are you serious? Who's horrible idea was this? I couldn't get to the refund page fast enough. There are other, far superior WWI & WWII flight sim experiences out there. I've been playing flight sims since Warbirds waaaay back in the day and this is by far the absolute worst experience I've ever had. When IL-2 was originally released it was great. This current iteration should be illegal, and 1C should be ashamed of themselves.
An updated version of the original IL2 with smooth graphics response and decent AI. Not a "video game" but a simulation that is very immersive. Huge learning curve to be sure, but worth the effort.
