Wings of Prey: Special Edition

The core game itself is still very good... the Steam version of it is distinctly NOT. Though it is finally working again, which is nice. Originally Gaijin used a criminally limited 4 or 5 time activation, 15 to 10 years ago. Formal requests t reset that activation limit were required were you to reinstall onto the same machine at a later date after using your quota of activations. 3rd party launcher log in was also mandatory for a time via their yuPlay portal. And then when War Thunder first hit the scene, the blatantly abandoned this game all together (there used to be an in-yuPlay marketplace for buying more planes, similar to the price gouging that goes on with modern MS Flight Sim, Il-2 Sturmovik, etc.). About 5 years ago (I think), the last time I tried firing this up, the game was impossible to even load and play because the yuPlay activation malware was still enforced, but the portal itself had been offline for years... broken in a way that was similar to games that had been locked behind Micro$oft's old GFWL system. (part of the reason my play time looks low, back in the day I gave up on that yuPlay b/s and just used a cracked executable to not have to waste time asking permission to have another activation for a game that I had rightfully paid for). Fast forward to the here and now... the game still has a yuPlay executable. There is an account creation/log in system... I did not care to even try it, but it says it is there. Try quitting out of the game... the client will close, but Steam will not allow you to load another game because Wings of Prey is still "Stopping". The reason? yuPlay.exe is running and will not close. You have to go to your Task Manager to force kill the executable.... EVERY. SINGLE. TIME !!! Setting textures, or something or other, to Ultra made the game crash-on-start for me as well. Click Maximum settings and do not tinker further, and you should be okay. Multiplay, as the store page says, is no longer functioning. Every time you load up and try to go to the singleplayer portion, you will be harassed with messages about "logging in" along with what you won't have access to while playing "offline"... you don't have to log in, it is just a guaranteed annoyance. A real shame because while the flight in this is far from "realistic", it was always a kind of benchmark for a well refined and enjoyable simcade WW2 dogfighter (or bomber). Even by today's standards, it still feels really good to fly with a low end joystick (many joysticks of the era have predefined profiles in-game that you can load up)... easy to fly with keyboard-only controls... and the terrain is, at times, more immersive and characterful than some of the mega polished, high-def and serious flight sims out there today. Buy the game via GOG (I have repurchased over there) and you will have a much more stable client experience. Avoid this Steam version.

Awesome WWII air combat game. Managed to get run it running great on Steam Deck. My only real complaint is that the spectacular narrator used in the console version of the game is changed a greatly inferior one for some lame licensing reasons I assume.

DO NOT BUY IT ON STEAM! The base game works fine, but the DLC needs to be activated through a website that is no longer working, it's a waste of money. BUY IT ON GOG INSTEAD, it comes with the DLC pre-installed and the whole package its like 5€ cheaper than on Steam!

Хорошая авиаркада наподобие Ace Combat, но про Вторую Мировую и с самолетами которые управляются как утюги по сравнению с реактивными. Авторы Ил-2 попробовали в этой игре достучаться до более широкой аудитории и добавили переключатель уровня реализма: Аркада, Реалистичный и Симулятор. На аркаде играете примерно как в War Thunder, все очень просто и легко, уже на реализме самолет начинает трястись без причины и каждый маневр нужно начинать заранее и очень аккуратно, плюс еще добавляется сильный разброс у пулеметом, что даже в большой бомбардировщик становиться трудно попасть. Насчет того что все пишут что игра не работает больше - это неправда, у меня все запустилось сразу и без плясок с бубном, никаких проблем не заметил

Looks good on paper, but the game is unplayable on a keyboard, and you can't play with the mouse. Also, the game doesn't exit properly, which ticks down your gameplay hours. Watch out for that if you're going to try it out. You might not get a refund. I'd say just avoid it.

I tried this game on the Steamdeck due to the gold rating on the proton DB, and it seems to work buttery smooth after a little tinkering. Once its running its the perfect game to scratch the flight sim itch without taking itself to seriously. Its kinda a single player version of War Thunder without all the micro transactions. For me, although I am experienced with modern combat flight sims, the Deck is not really suited to these, however this game was developed for consoles, and with a little tweaking of the controls (use Gyro for view) this game is great. Be cautious getting the DLC however.. without the yuplay servers it wont work without jumping through hoops.* If you can find it on sale, this title is a steal. *Fixed today 14 March 2026 with a patch! Seems somone heard us. Thanks

The only thing i hate is that i can't shoot down parachuting enemy pilots. How i can commit war crimes?

Game launched but as soon as missions began, game would crash to desktop. Purchased the dlc which cannot be used as it has to be registered on a website that no longer exists so you cannot play the dlc. Game and dlc refunded, which is a real shame. Was looking forward to playing this again (owned on ps3). DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!
