very cute little game that deserves much more attention and love. ♥ doodle art ♥ relaxing, adorable ost ♥ dialogues will make you smile ♥ silly achievements ♥ simple but captivating story game costs literally nothing, go buy it
I picked this game up because of Northernlion's Let's Look At, and I'm glad I did. It's a cute game about a human (who happens to look like a ghost) staying five nights at a hotel after finding a mysterious stone that's going to bring our MC a fortune. The game gives me some Undertale vibes in terms of the music and humor in it. If you're into talking to NPCs and exploring a set map, this is a fun game. There's no combat to speak of, aside from some surly hotel staff being mad at you from time to time. There's also some replayability built into the game as indicated by the numerous achievements and the massive amount of inventory space; I finished my first playthrough with half my spaces open. My biggest issue with the game is the sequence breaking. Naturally, the game's been out for at least one day, so there are already walk-throughs, but even still you don't necessarily need to do certain steps in order. The game has a day/night cycle, so once you do enough tasks in Day X, it'll go to Night X, and send you to your room once you've done the evening's content. Still, there are certain things that you're "supposed" to do/decode that you don't necessarily have to to progress the game; I figured out the clue to get an item after already having the item in my inventory, but the MC still got excited about going to a location to get the item. Still, this is a relatively small complaint since it really only applied to one thing. Also, there was one jump scare and I'm a weenie, so I'm complaining about that too.
This review was made possible by IndiePromo. I received a reviewing copy of this game for free. However, my review is honest.
Skip to the bottom for my Final Thoughts Hotel Sowls is a mystery/adventure point and click game developed by a 2 man studio based in South Korea. Hotel Sowls features simultaneously cute/creepy cartoon art, a great soundtrack and a strange story.
Graphics
The art style in Hotel Sowls is very unqiue, and manages to both be cute and eerie at the same time. The characters in the game are all done in cartoon style, while the items and background look like they've been corrupted by the void. Yet, these two seemingly polar opposite art styles don't clash at all, but rather creates a unique aesthetic that fits the game very well.
Audio & Soundtrack
Of all the games I've had the pleasure (and sometimes displeasure) of reviewing, I can say without a doubt that Hotel Sowls has one of the best soundtracks that has graced my ears. It fits in more with the "cute" theme of the game than the creepy, but is incredibly relaxing and further contributes to the great atmosphere of the game. If I were to describe the music, I'd say it resembles the music from Stardew Valley or Pokemon. Hotel Sowls also has an optional soundtrack availible for purchase on the Steam store. If you want to give the soundtrack a listen, Studio Sotts uploaded a sample of gameplay with the music playing in the background.
Gameplay
Hotel Sowls, like I previously mentioned, is a mystery/adventure point and click game. The game features a day/night cycle, and you have 5 in game days to beat it. There is a lot to explore in the hotel, and, if you choose to purchase/play the game, I suggest you spend the first day exploring as much of the hotel as you can. There are plenty of things to interact with, and there are tons of funny/interesting dialogues you can have with the many NPCs. With 6 floors of the hotel for you to explore, there is a surprising amount of content in the game. Like all games, Hotel Sowls is far from bug-free. I encountered quite a few bugs in my playthrough of the game, but they were all visual bugs and didn't hinder my progression of the game at all (besides being slightly irritating).
Storyline
Like I said in the introductory paragraph of the review, Hotel Sowls was developed by a 2 man studio based in South Korea. In fact, the game's website is pretty much entirely in Korean. To be honest, parts of the storyline don't make sense. For the first little bit of my playthrough, I was pretty lost and didn't really have a good idea of what exactly was happening. I don't know if things were lost in translation or not, but I have a feeling they were. The gist of the story is that you play as a pharmacologist (taken from the Steam store page), and you venture out in search of a mysterious stone that costs you a fortune to purchase. Then, while in town, you stop at the titular Hotel Sowls, where the game takes place. The story gets pretty eerie, and once I got the hang of the game, I was able to follow along with the game much better. There are also a few different endings to Hotel Sowls. My playthough of the game took me roughly an hour and a half to complete, and if you're going for all the endings in the game, there's a decent amount of gameplay hours to enjoy.
Final Thoughts
So all in all, kudos to Studio Sott, the 2 man developers of Hotel Sowls. They've created a great indie point and click game with unique visuals and a great soundtrack. It could use a little more polish, but is entirely playable and enjoyable as is currently. With it's relatively low price of $5 CAD, I highly recommend you give this game a try. I loved this game so much. The writing, art direction, and overall feel is just amazing. I love point and click games, and this one did not dissapoint. I personally think its worth more than the requested price, and I really hope this studio makes more games. I really can't say anything bad about it, I can't wait to play it more and unlock more endings. Thank you Studio Sott!! There are currently no walkthroughs for this game, and I want it to stay that way. Don't give up!!
Fun little game with a nice aesthetic and setting. About 2 hours of gameplay to reach the true ending, but for the price this game is offered at, its worth picking up to play through yourself
A small cartoonlike point and click game with a story that is somewhat dark in spots but overall feels more like magic realism than horror. there is a lot of silly comedy and odd dialogues, which makes it fun to wander around in the environment and interact with things. There are several endings, one of which can only be reached after getting another one. To finish the game and the differnt endings you'll probably need a walkthrough. There is nothing really hard to figure out except near the end, where you have to combine things in a certain order. Lots of extra achievements for doing various extra things. The endings themselves don't have achievements, nor do many of the main story points. I had trouble getting a few of them and didn't quite 100%. It's playful and not that serious. Great when you want a small game with some mysteries and humor in a cartoon setting.
A charming little game that is very interesting! My first play through took about 4 hours including exploring the hotel extensively, talking to all the NPCs, and goofing around. While I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, if you are looking for a slightly odd point-and-click adventure with a nice soundtrack I would suggest you pick it up!
오묘하군.
