A fun love letter to games and music. Not a perfect one, but it's pretty damn close ;) In a different, less greedy world, this would have turned into a whole game series.
give me hi fi rush 2 and my life is yours......
They manage to keep the convos between characters light-hearted and humourous while still being well-written. Each character is so memorable, both friend and foe alike. Combat is amazing, the game's flexible in that you can choose many ways to combo your opponent, or just mindlessly use the same one if it consistently works. Everything has impact, and I find myself laughing half the time, glued to my screen the other. If there's one minor gripe I have, its that this is quite an exhausting game to play, cause there's just so much to take in and enjoy. 10/10 *I decided to start my playthrough on the hardest difficulty, so maybe it's a lot less exhausting on the normal setting, just sayin
This game is pretty universally loved, and it's certainly a well‑made game. It has a nice comicbook aesthetic that I like, and the voice acting is well done. Ultimately, though, the gameplay was slow and boring, and it didn't click with me. I do usually enjoy rhythm games, but I have so many issues with this game that I'm honestly surprised it's so well rated. When I first got this, I had no issues with my Xbox controller, and apparently after some update the controller just wouldn't work at all. I had to use Steam Input, which is pretty lame for a game that was basically put out by Microsoft. I saw numerous complaints from people with various controllers, so at some point this was broken and just never fixed. I found the gameplay loop incredibly boring and repetitive even by the end of the first level. You have a short platforming section leading to an arena‑style fight, and this literally repeats through the entire game. Platforming and movement are painfully slow and clunky, and just slow walking to the next fight arena is so tedious. There are quite a few quicktime events, and many don't actually follow the music rhythm. Why? The music kind of sucks. There are a few licensed songs, but for 90% of the game almost every track sounds like just a 15–30‑beat loop. For a rhythm game, this is really disappointing. The voice acting was nicely done, but many of the characters have terrible fake accents, and I thought the dialogue in general was super cringy. The cutscenes look nice, but even though they show higher FPS, they were clearly just 30 frames and looked choppy and kind of like garbage tbh. Also the environments pretty much all look the same though 90% of the game. I ran into a softlock in one of the last boss fights that kept repeating about a dozen times. There are tons of people complaining about this, but no resolution I could find. Eventually, after trying over and over, it just worked, so no idea why it broke or why it started working. Clearly nobody knows what the issue is, so it's unlikely to be fixed. I basically just glitched out, fell through the map over and over, with nothing to be done but quit and try again. I added a screenshot if anyone has interest (background looks cool at least lol!) There apparently is some replay value by way of doors you just can't open your first playthough, but I really wanted to just get though this so I could knock it out of the backlog. I will say that the game did grow on me a bit by the very end. There are some unlockable abilities and such, but really nothing of great interest. Ultimately, almost everyone seems to like this game, but it really just didn't do it for me, and I don't recommend it. I regret not playing it a bit more when I first picked it up so I could have refunded it. I do think the game is well made and fairly priced, but I just didn't find the gameplay to be fun, and there are some pretty huge issues, including problematic controller support and a potential game‑breaking bug close to the end. I do think you'll know if you're going to like this or not within the 2‑hour return window though, so it may be worth a try. Just make sure you don't let it sit before trying it out because it really doesn't live up to the hype.
Despite the game’s lively start, it became dull and repetitive toward the end, and I couldn’t wait for the game to end. Every time I approached a spacious area, I’d think, “Oh, here comes a fight.” But because of the sheer number and variety of enemies toward the end (which turns the fight into a chaotic mess), the constant, cumbersome switching between abilities, a very strange and uninteresting character progression system (I didn’t use 70% of what was offered), “secret doors” that only open on a second playthrough (who came up with that?), the boss Mimos, and a very weak and naive ending, I simply cannot recommend this game to you. The first half of the game is thrilling—something new, fresh, with unusual gameplay mechanics that make you want to tap along to the beat of the music (4+)—and… the second half (3-).
