Alright, look at my rig: you literally cannot buy a better graphics card without dropping stupid money. 7900XTX and 9800X3D is the *BEST* case scenario for this game... But it still runs like crap!! I tried ultra first. Most areas were okay. But, during combat and whenever new things appear on-screen, the game lags and chokes badly. Also---this game pegs my CPU for some reason. I checked to make sure it is running through my GPU, and it is. For some odd reason, no matter what you do---fake frames, low settings, lowered FPS---this game just runs like dog poop on PC. Wo Long had the same problem for about a year or longer. I hope to God they patch this crap out because this is absurd. I am not bragging, but I've got a top of the line water-cooled gaming PC: this game should run GREAT on it, I do insane things on this rig without breaking a sweat, yet Nioh 3 *still* runs like a fossilized turd on a sunny day. Embarrassing! I am a LONG-TIME FAN of Nioh. I played Nioh 1 & 2 for hundreds of hours, played them until I was bitterly bored. Went through NG+ multiple times. Nioh 2 ran great on PC, by the way: this game has no excuse to run bad!! Especially not on this computer!! I am shocked and ashamed that the game was released in this state. My advice: go play Nioh 1 & 2 for about a year until they fix this game. I'll update this review if they do. I WOULD tell you about the gameplay (spoilers: ninja is broken easy-mode, the special red glow parry from N2 is back but using it switches your styles) but honestly don't even worry about gameplay at the moment. The game is going to run like crap no matter what you do. If it matters, I'm running Linux, but that operates via Proton which basically means I'm emulating Windows, so... performance should be the same on Windows. Judging by the other reviews on Windows system, they have the same problem. So, no, this isn't a Linux-specific issue. Fix the fkn game Koei, this is crap!!
I was beyond excited when Nioh 3 was announced. The first 2 games had incredible combat, and great build variety. I'm very glad to say that's all here and better than ever, but I cannot reccomend this game in it's current state. Nioh 3 ditches the level-based design of it's predecessors and goes open world. This has it's upsides and downsides. Exploration is better than ever, and they did a great job of filling the world with objectives and interesting things to investigate. Unfortunately, this does take away from the slick, quick paced levels that the series is known for. You spend a lot more time figuring out where to go than you do actually progressing. If you're a fan of games like Elden Ring and Crimson Desert, this is a huge win for you. I can definitely understand the frustrations from people that prefer the older style of the levels. The combat in Nioh 3 is spectacular. It's an improvement beyond Nioh 2 in many ways, the most of which is a completely new style of combat, the Ninja style. The Ninja moveset is focused on mobility and dodging, and it nails that feeling. It feels amazing to dart around the open world and quickly shred enemies. If you want slower paced, heavier, parry and block style combat closer to the first 2 games, you have the samurai style available for you. Both styles have the stance system for your weapons and have tons of unique skills to unlock and experiment with. Obviously, with refined combat comes refined enemies, and they did an excellent job with this as well. The enemy variety definitely feels reminiscent of Elden Ring, and the feeling of discovery and shock when finding a new enemy feels amazing. The game encourages you to try and figure out an Enemy's movset and weaknesses before you approach. A lot of classic Nioh favorite Yokai are still here as well. After all this, you're probably thinking, "Why don't you recommend this game? Everything you said was positive." It was, up until this point. This game has a glaring, obvious issue that is persistent and hampers the entire experience. Yes, I'm talking about the technical aspect of the game. Team Ninja is unfortunately known for their terrible PC ports, and Nioh 3 is no different. Insane CPU usage, low frame rates, and graphics that frankly don't look much better than Nioh 2. All of these same issues have been present in their other PC ports, and in some like Rise of the Ronin, have never been fixed. I'm writing this review 4 months after launch, and there has not been a single patch or fix in regards to the optimization process. I don't know if they've given up, or what, but the fact is people with PC's even above the requirements will not be able to enjoy this game to the fullest in this state. I really hope that Team Ninja is aware of this and is planning a patch to fix this issues, but I'm not holding my breath. Nioh 3 is an incredible experience in every sense apart from it's frame rate. For that reason, I can't recommend this game. If the game gets a patch that addresses this, I will absolutely change my review. Team Ninja, you have an incredible game here, please make it run acceptably.
I just cannot recommend the game in its current state. I thought after a few patches I would be ok, sadly I am not. If its on a good sale, grab it. If its not on sale, buyer be cautious and read on. I am left feeling wanting more... it felt like Nioh. Looked like Nioh. Plays like Nioh. Combat really was the only saving grace here. Ive got several hundreds of hours in this franchise going back to Nioh 1, and Im also a Team Ninja fan going back to their early days, so I am trying to remain unbiased in my "Fanboy" review. I figured after 80 hours of gametime I could leave an honest review. Just gonna get the good things out of the way first as the list is rather short.... Combat: Absolute WIN here. Love it. Wish I could have the way the level up system is here in 2 in my opinion. Team Ninja proves they know how to make a good combat game. It is their Core strength here. Im kinda in the middle ground on the whole ninja swap thing. Feels overpowered to me in some aspects and others makes me feel like its pointless. Most of my time was spent in Samurai form versus this Ninja form. Damage output in Ninja form was just lacking, however the access to using Ninjistu was more newcomer friendly and seemed like it was an aspect to really lean on. Kinda brought some spice to the mix but not my cup of tea. (For you teahouse nerds) Now for the bad stuffs, Boss fights........*Deep breath* They are totally allowed to use previous bosses from the franchise as they see fit as they own the stuff but, it wasnt like how we would have seen it in the second installment. Newer bosses seemed to be, how do I put this.... not really tested? I was able to first try some bosses, others took me days. Some mechanics work in the open world, but think again in boss fights. Prepare to die a few times just trying to figure out what does and doesnt work in this arena. (Looking at you move cancels with burst counter) Story: Made no sense other than you are a time traveling hero saving a particular dynasty on the verge of catastrophic collapse due to a surprise Yokai attack pushing them to the brink of "we do or die here". Im sorry, Nioh 2 had a better story line to it that you could follow and connect with a little bit. Onmyo Magic got a huge kick in the balls here. I felt very limited on what I could use because "Sorry Mario your Wraith is in another castle!" leaving me agitated that I couldnt use something to full potential even though the area is cleared or couldnt use it at all. Feels like this was on purpose to get us to use the new "Ninjustu Style" The Soul Charge Counter was introduced way too late in my opinion. I was intuitively trying to do it as a alternative to burst counter before I unlocked it. So I was trying to fix what I thought was a "Bad Habbit" but turned out to be a feature that unlocks after a certain point of the game. I had to walk away from my computer for a few minutes after unlocking this due to my disppointment saying "im level 55 and im just now getting this????" The stableness of the game makes me wonder who is in charge of bug squashing, cause updating the armor sets and minor bug fixes isnt what this title needs this late after launch. This title is still not hardware friendly for the lower tier of PC's even at lowest settings. This makes me scratch my head as I am seeing what is being done to achieve this "massive open world" appearance. Things drawn ridiculously cheap, fires are like what nintendo 64 did back in the day, completely 2D. Open works isnt really and open world. It is still broken up into chuncks which kinda feel like really big levels instead of an open world that seemlessly flows into other parts. Might as well of kept the level by level design from previous games. All and all, I am putting this down for a bit and coming back after a while to see if any if at all improvements to the core game have been made to make it more stable not just for the hardware but more consistant with difficulty as well. Seems like some parts were for sure rushed over others. Again, I am a Fanboy of this franchise. I will still tell you Nioh is my favorite franchise. But I am stuck in a paradox like I was years ago after the release of Ninja Gaiden 3.... The second game was better than the third.... Seems like Team Ninja is Cursed with any third installment they make.
I don't recommend this at all. It is a solid 9/10 when you first start it and by the time you finish the story it drops to a 3. There is simply too much here and it all falls apart. By the way, I loved nioh 2. That game also had a lot going on and it even introduced a new mechanic in new game +4 or something like that. I had to force myself to finish the story here because I heard ng+ is where the real fun starts. But guess what? Its just pointless grinding and endless tedium. The open world was a huge mistake. Its not even that open. This is just a bunch of linear levels stitched together by paths. The first map handles that illusion well but by the final map, you can pretty much see through all of the designer's tricks. ALSO this really really made the game a slog- the bosses are awful. Your average enemy or even miniboss can go down quite easily. You have many tools at your disposal, I would argue that some powers make the game way too easy. However, the bosses don't follow the rules established in the game. They move way too fast and have hyper armor. This makes the samurai class useless btw. Yes I am complaining that the game is too hard and get gud is not an option. The game is simply cheap with its bosses. Also I love a good collectathon but why does it have to be this extensive in a fighting game? I loathe those segments where there is a kodama/container sitting behind a barrier that you should be able to easily jump over but instead you have to circle the area, find an invisible wall and do some platforming to reach it. Its not the game for that. The worst culprit has got to be bodies hanging over ledges that you cannot get to unless you are doing a specific side quest. Terrible. And hold on- everything I just complained about can be applied to elden ring. Yep, that is true but elden ring is not a grind. It is longer than nioh 3 but knows how to pace itself. Kinda makes me realize that nioh 3 is like a sandbox type of game that the devs make with player tools that don't actually exist.
Perhaps one of the worst optimized games I've ever had the displeasure of playing. Team Ninja's previous port of Rise of the Ronin also sucked hot dog water off the scummy floor. Great game but I simply cant abide the state they've left it in. I waited several months for performance fixes and there's been NOTHING. Just a condescending "guide to optimization" telling me to clear my cache, and its totally not their fault. Pretty sick of their whole attitude. Its a shame really because again, great game. Best Nioh in my opinion, the open world really works for me and its easier than the other two. The only thing I dont love is splitting the weapons between the two "modes", meaning Ninja weapons dont have the traditional three stances, just one. My main weapon the Kusarigama was a victim of this.
Reviewed specifically as a co-op experience. Me and a friend burned through It Takes Two, bounced off Split Fiction because it was too easy, and went looking for something with actual teeth. Nioh 3 has teeth. If you're coming here looking for Dark Souls or Elden Ring difficulty but with two people: manage your expectations. Co-op is easier. More enemies, more HP on bosses, but you're always able to gang up on everything together and that tips the scales. From other reviews the difficulty curve is expected to keep climbing significantly, so it probably won't stay easy forever. But don't expect solo-difficulty challenge with a friend alongside you. That's just the nature of two people coordinating on content tuned for one. That said, it's an absolute blast doing it together. The co-op implementation itself is one of the best I've experienced in any game, let alone a soulslike. Progression saves to your own profile, so you can play solo for a bit, hop on with your friend later, and everything carries over. Chests you opened stay opened for you. If you've overleveled you can actually manually drop excess Amrita into your personal stash and dial your level back down to match your friend before joining. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. I main Ninja, he mains Samurai. The two class systems are different enough that we genuinely complement each other rather than stepping on each other's toes. There's actual build theory to sink into between sessions, and the depth of the systems keeps growing the further you go. After 50 hours we're still in the first real era. There's a full NG+ mode and two DLC expansions coming. For two people looking for a co-op game that respects your intelligence and rewards coordination, this is the one right now. Recommended.
