I love rhythm games, but a huge gripe that I have with them is that they all feel quite "samey". Most games consist of notes sliding down a track and you have to hit them, when is fun, undoubtedly, but once you've played one, you've played like 80% of rhythm games. This is why I'm so excited to say that HI FI RUSH completely reinvents the rhythm genre and shows that it is truly capable of eye-catching, unique experiences. No other rhythm game can quite stand toe-to-toe with it's creativity, art, soundtrack, and story (ok maybe Rhythm Doctor). Everything about this game is great; it's very hard to find flaws in this game because it is that polished and fun to play. The gameplay is obviously the sticking point, and MAN is it good. It's amazing how no matter how shoddy your rhythm is, you still feel like you're hitting to the beat of every song. Also, with the wide range of attacks and abilities you have, it feels electric zipping around the place killing enemies. It's a truly cathartic experience (even if I couldn't get the combo timing right for the life of me). The artstyle and animated cutscenes are a joy. All the character designs are top notch and so expressive. Everything, from the characters to the enemies to the environment is just oozing with charm. It's so hard nowadays to have charm in a game, but this game nails it. Writing's great too! I was worried that the writing would be too "millenial-core", but it actually is really quite funny and charming. It got me to really care about this band of characters that we follow, which I personally think is one of the hardest things to do in a game. The environments are so vast and expansive, and there's enough variety to make each new level unique from each other. I was initially worried that I'd get tired of the industrial theme of the levels, but they switch up the environment to all sorts of different locales. And each level feels alive and lived in, like you're trekking through an actual factory/workplace, rather than a video game level. I think my only major gripe with the game is that the platforming is rather clunky and hard to get used to. This isn't a huge flaw, but it's definitely noticeable as you play just how weird the platforming feels. A sprint or run button would help greatly with this. Overall, this is an absolutely incredible game that I can't believe took me so long to play. Please check it out if you can, it's worth the full price of admission and more! 9.5/10 Also screw microsoft for shutting tango down
If you're reading this, you already know what this game is, you just need a deciding factor on whether you should buy it. As such, I'll ask you two questions: Do you enjoy pressing buttons to the beat? Do you enjoy chaining button combos together to beat up bad guys with a sword or sword-like implement? If your answer to either of those questions was even a mild yes, then I've got great news! Hi-Fi Rush has an incredibly satisfying core and a reasonably-sized story mode to fill you up. If you're not full after that, then the game has plenty of unlockables, secrets, and challenges to keep you going until you are full. In addition and as the icing to the cake, the writing is very clever, the comic book aesthetic is immaculate, the soundtrack can only be described as "Rockin'" at minimum, and you can pet the cat.
I am not a fan of rhythm games, but this still managed to reel me in! The writing can be hysterical at times, and the soundtrack is top-notch. Game settings are highly customizable, allowing novice rhythm players a much easier experience. Highly recommend. Tango Gameworks never missed.
Despite the game’s lively start, it became dull and repetitive toward the end, and I couldn’t wait for the game to end. Every time I approached a spacious area, I’d think, “Oh, here comes a fight.” But because of the sheer number and variety of enemies toward the end (which turns the fight into a chaotic mess), the constant, cumbersome switching between abilities, a very strange and uninteresting character progression system (I didn’t use 70% of what was offered), “secret doors” that only open on a second playthrough (who came up with that?), the boss Mimos, and a very weak and naive ending, I simply cannot recommend this game to you. The first half of the game is thrilling—something new, fresh, with unusual gameplay mechanics that make you want to tap along to the beat of the music (4+)—and… the second half (3-).
They manage to keep the convos between characters light-hearted and humourous while still being well-written. Each character is so memorable, both friend and foe alike. Combat is amazing, the game's flexible in that you can choose many ways to combo your opponent, or just mindlessly use the same one if it consistently works. Everything has impact, and I find myself laughing half the time, glued to my screen the other. If there's one minor gripe I have, its that this is quite an exhausting game to play, cause there's just so much to take in and enjoy. 10/10 *I decided to start my playthrough on the hardest difficulty, so maybe it's a lot less exhausting on the normal setting, just sayin
(Meh/10) Made for those who like beat em ups. I didn't like it at first, but honestly it was my fault because I had to fix the hit registration for the rhythm timing. Story was buns, but it had an entertaining fighting system.
