The gameplay is uninteresting and there is almost no progression beween characters. Each lifetime is only a few minutes long so you never get attached to any of you characters. Game throws you with a seemingly unwinnable event within the first few rounds and no real way of beating it short of following a wiki and hoping the r&g is kind.
I am very glad I got this game while it was only $1.18. Very buggy, and the developers don't seem to care to fix it. Instead the released a remake, which looks to be basically the same game, with similar bugs. The most irritating bug has been buildings/city improvements vanishing or reverting to what they were before when you travel through a station (stations btw are essetial to the game as they allow you to creat fast travel points between to "worlds" It's seemingly random, so you might as well roll the dice and cross your fingers that all your hard work will remain in tact. Do not waste your money, or more importantly your time, on this game or it's remake. It will inevitably bug out and make all your efforts over 20 generations or more pointless, and make it impossible to progress furthur into the game. Real shame, the game would be highly recomended by me if the bugs weren't being ignored by the developers.
I played this and killed some time with it; gotta say that the game is solid in its design but does lack in engagement. I kicked off the game without the tutorial but tutorial elements still showed through the start to help guide me on my way. It was a comfortable start and all the information i needed was in front of me in some form. After a few turns in game i was able to pick up on buildings i liked, routes i wanted to take, and mid game goals. Also within 17 generations amongst several different starts i was able to slay bosses, explore lands, and develope towns to my advantage. Despite the repetiveness that begins to form from the core loop i never had issue with the legacy mechanics. I usually went with the best person in the nearest town and didn't stress it; i focused on traits and buildings that benefited my kids i rarely felt like i lost progress. I agree with other reviewers that the game could be better by fleshing out the core mechanics more or adding more interactions with the enemies on the board. However this game was entertaining an good for killing time. It's no winner for best game of X type but it is a functional game of strategy and luck that gave me its worth in a couple hours of play. It's not the game for everyone but as a simple strategy game its functional, solid design, interesting, and something i would show off to a friend to play (maybe throw in a drinking game for anytime our character takes a hit or survives raising a child.)
Here is the dealio
This game has mixed reviews because people were not happy about the release of Hero Generations: Regen. Which is essentially the same game with some minor graphical and quality of life improvements. In the original you have to play it in windows mode, there is no choice. There is no graphics option, there is, no real options to speak of. While I can somewhat understand why people are upset the developer released a "new" game, I don't think its entirely fair. There is enough improvement in the new game over the old game that I can understand the developer wanting paid for that work and not offering it as patches to the original game. The developer even offered anyone that had copy of the original game a discount on Regen. I didn't get to take advantage of that discount (they basically sent out steam coupons that did expire, but at the time I wasn't really picking up games or getting on steam much at all, so missed out on them. However, they did send me several over the course of like a year or two) I will say that Regen does open with a very similar launcher I've seen in some independent demos and betas. That's kind of jank, but it's whatever, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter or change anything. When I got the original game it was regular retail of $14.99, instead of the regular retail of $5.99 it has today (and I paid full price). I was not upset back then, and felt like original version of the game was worth what I paid. So obviously I think it's worth the current $5.99, and if you can get it on discount then even better. I would still recommend this game, in either it's original form, or the newer Regen version. It's easy to pick up and play, but deceptively challenging and deep, for such a simple presentation and package. It's certainly not a game for everyone, so I'd recommend watching some game play videos to see if it's the kind of game you might enjoy. So let's say you've decided you do like this game and you want to know what version you should get. Well here are some things to consider:

Are you ok with playing in a medium sized window you can't resize?
Do you want the soundtrack but don't care about the art book?
Do you care about the art book, but not the soundtrack?
Do you think slightly better graphics, full screen mode, save slots, and upgraded options are worth $10?
And, here is why those questions matter when making this decision The only way to get the soundtrack (here on Steam) is to buy the original version of the game with the collector's edition. There is no offering for the soundtrack on it's own or with the Regen version of the game. If you get the collector's edition of the original game (that must be played in windowed and lacks several quality of life upgrades) you will get the art book and the soundtrack. If you get the Regen version of the game, then you automatically get the art book (the exact same art book as is offered with the collector's edition of the original version of the game) you will have a game that has slightly better polished graphics, with lots of quality of life upgrades to the options, but you will not be able to get the soundtrack, and you will pay $14.99 (assuming you pay full retail price) as opposed to $5.99.
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
Cool concept, but lost interest after a couple of hours.
oh man, I´m in love with this game. it's really cool. I´ll write a proper review after i manage to finish it, it's hard too.
Started as a hero then became a dad then a grandpa with a cane and sword - now my grandkids argue who’s the fiercest.
Fun little game, not something that will keep you entertained for weeks, but well worth the price
