Hero Generations is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The game, laughably, is described by the developer as "The original roguelike". That would be Rogue, not this mobile app crapfest. The absolute state of mobile developers right here, ladies and gentlemen. Anyway as the developer admits this is a ripoff of Rogue/Hack, but there's a twist. Every turn you age a year, so you need to reproduce quickly and have a child to take over, or the game ends. But that's really just a pointless gimmick that adds little to the overall theme... it's not the 1980's anymore, gamers expect depth in games. Rogue is dead, and this cheap nasty mobile app ripoff is just an insult to the legacy of those great old games. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the mobile app, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the mobile app, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The mobile app features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The developers didn't design the mobile app for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The mobile app simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the mobile app unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. The mobile app features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the mobile app, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the mobile app doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the mobile app... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Because this is a mobile app, is priced to insult and gouge PC gamers, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend.
Unplayable on 4k. Wasn t worth even the 70 cents i payed for it.
Legacy system needs improvement, building degeneration is irritating, you don't improve much between generations.
Interesting little game, I love the concept/idea. Of course, like many gamers I'm quite tired of/over the 1983 graphcis every dev seems to use to call indie/retro. I understand finacials, but you can use your funds to improve over time, with the goal being to improve graphics (I mean come on, play HOMM3 from 30 years ago and it's not difficult to understand 2d or isometric graphics don't have to be pixel bliips..lol). As to the game itself, it is deepr than it seems, and can be a challenge as you learn what lies below the surface. I've had fun ewith it, and do recommend giving it a shot, IF you understand you actually need to LEANRN how to play it and the nuances around themechanics. Only problem I have is the lifespan should be longer, I think there may be a way to edit the save file (lol) to do that, but that';s the only thing i find frustrating. Otherwise It's a decent little game, I wish the concept/idea could be fleshed out in a more polished/graphical game. Still ifs fun to play, and I will be playing on occasion.
I think this game is as good as it's sequel.

Cool concept, but lost interest after a couple of hours.
I am very glad I got this game while it was only $1.18. Very buggy, and the developers don't seem to care to fix it. Instead the released a remake, which looks to be basically the same game, with similar bugs. The most irritating bug has been buildings/city improvements vanishing or reverting to what they were before when you travel through a station (stations btw are essetial to the game as they allow you to creat fast travel points between to "worlds" It's seemingly random, so you might as well roll the dice and cross your fingers that all your hard work will remain in tact. Do not waste your money, or more importantly your time, on this game or it's remake. It will inevitably bug out and make all your efforts over 20 generations or more pointless, and make it impossible to progress furthur into the game. Real shame, the game would be highly recomended by me if the bugs weren't being ignored by the developers.
Its cool. Sadly the game dev abandoned Post Production and left this game unfinished and unbalanced Only buy with a BIG discount. You play as a Hero, who not only has to do great things, has to procreate and leave a successor. its a neat idea that sadly didnt get proper development. The fact that the world is random each time you begin a new hero is just dumb. I had to change the reccomendation after i read some other reveiws on their 'next' game. They ripped the update from this game and sold as a separate one, thats disgusting. They got so much money by scamming people from Kickstarter that they became super greedy and tried scamming people out of MORE money
