I thought I'd take a chance on a new experience and ended up finding one of my favorite games of the year! The combat of Hell is Us is fun, but could use some more enemy variety. What we're mostly here for is the puzzles and exploration. The game hits a sweet spot with its puzzles where I didn't get stuck any individual puzzle, but I still felt super smart whenever I solved one. The atmosphere is fantastic if depressing. Our character is solving mysteries and fighting monsters while everyone around him is busy fight a brutal religious civil war that complicates his life every step of the way. I can't stop myself from recommending this game to anyone who is even remotely interested in it.

I have tried souls-like before, though few. I could never come to grips with the timing, combat, puzzles, etc. This is the third I have tried and now I am in love. This game is phenomenal and I cannot begin to express how much fun I had playing it. The story is entrancing, dark, and not without moments of humor. The sounds are magnificent: distorted growls, cries, and screams assault the senses. Then there are the visuals; extraordinary! The way the walkers move is abhorrent and sensual all at once. The controls are smooth throughout. Combat is a lot of fun and incredibly satisfying when parrying or dodging. I love the characters, the lore, and the environments you get to explore. I found myself often frustrated with the target prioritization; sometimes a quick switch would leave me targeting the very farthest enemy rather than the one immediately starting to attack. The only other down side was the "element" system which did not seem to make a difference in play. I acquired mounds of buffs/debuffs for Rage, Terror, Grief, and ecstasy, but I never seemed to need them. Overall this is a truly magnificent game and I would highly recommend it!
