Shaun/10
Heavy Rain is an interactive drama where you alternate between various main characters to piece together clues on this elusive "Origami Killer" in order to save Ethan Mars' son, Shaun. Let's get one thing out of the way: this is a flawed title. Flaws are visible in both the narrative and gameplay design. For one, the prologue that sets up the main narrative is utterly stupid. For a grounded game like Heavy Rain, the beginning features a moment that will leave you in utter disbelief. The good news is that once you get that out of the way, the story takes a turn for the better. The further you go along, the more interesting and engaging the narrative becomes. I have to give special praise for how they managed to tell a story using not one but four main characters. Each character is vital to piecing together the puzzle. Of course, not every character is equally interesting, but they are all important to the narrative. It's hard for me to pick a favorite as they all had great sections. Do keep in mind that I am making a distinction between great character sections and great characters. The former is what is featured in Heavy Rain. The characters themselves, though? Trope-y, sometimes uninteresting, and other times downright stupid. You're not gonna walk out of this game hanging a poster of Ethan Mars on your wall like you would a Leon S. Kennedy or Doomguy. With that said, Quantic Dream made the correct choice this time of grounding the narrative. There is no Mayan civilization angle or superpowers like in Fahrenheit. There is a villain with a motivation, and as stupid as the motivation is, it's leagues better than their previous offering. Unfortunately, the way in which Quantic Dream portrayed the main heroine in this game suffers from the same issues as their previous title. I don't know if it's a David Cage thing or a French thing, but not every story needs a romance. This could not have been more of the case than in Heavy Rain. Madison Paige, the main heroine, is devalued throughout the narrative and treated as an object of desire. Shouting “sexism!” is not my first instinct in games where women are portrayed sexually, but it is a major problem here. However, due to the robust and much-improved choices and consequences system here, it is not going to be a major problem for most players. The highlight of this game is how every choice leads to different consequences, all of which impact not just each scenario in the game, but also the overall ending. I felt like I had agency as a player. I was able to mold what kind of character Ethan Mars would end up becoming, and that was more satisfying to me than getting the best ending possible. Quantic Dream knocked it out of the park here. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the gameplay. It is a sluggish game, and the mouse and keyboard controls further compounded that sluggishness for me. Apart from the improved dynamic QTEs that helped keep my eyes focused on the action, the gameplay here is a visible downgrade from Fahrenheit. Heavy Rain is very much a one-and-done for me because anytime I get the feeling that I want to know what would happen if I replayed a chapter and chose differently, I remember that I would have to actually deal with the gameplay and I stop and watch a YouTube video that shows me the alternative route instead. Visually, the game looks fantastic even if it does show its age. The eyes in particular are incredibly detailed and help bring the characters to life. No coincidence that the game makes a note to zoom in on the eyes between each chapter transition. The animations, on the other hand, are inconsistent, with mouth movements in particular feeling a bit too stretchy. Also, the brown and decrepit nature of the world is a matter of taste. It can feel a bit overdone at times, but I love it for personal reasons. Dilapidated Midwestern towns/cities are some of my favorite settings ever, so this ticked all the right boxes. In spite of its flaws, Heavy Rain is very much a cult classic. There is so much to appreciate here, and I was fond of the overall narrative. It's unconventional in all the best ways and offers an experience you will not find in a lot of games. I do wish this particular game was less of an interactive drama and more video game-y, but that aside, I think that Heavy Rain is well worth trying at least once.
peak 10/10 controller controls are ♥♥♥♥ tho if ur using a ps5 controller
