Think a bullet-hell game Ghosts 'n Goblins, Metal Slug, Cuphead, and a plethora of other games mixed into one. ALSO! Added bonus, you can switch directions allowing for more creative game-play. Albeit there isn't a LOT of secrets in this game, it's fun to come back to the stage after and replay to get other special perks or just to farm some coin for more unique items. You basically get some boosts, armors, special pets to help you etc.HONESTLY this game is pretty great for what it is, but I do have a bit of a bias as I got it for $1 on sale. $10 isn't terrible, but I feel a more fair price is $5. If you have an ARCADE CABINET this would go GREAT with it. That's the kind of game I see it as and so pretty excited about that. IF this is the type to of game that appeals to you then you WILL like it.
I'm giving Gryphon Knight Epic a recommendation because I like scrolling shooters, the pixel art is quite good (with some nice backgrounds and good sprite work), and I enjoyed the Mega Man-esque unlocking of a new weapon with each boss defeated. I also appreciated every level containing a cleverly-hidden rune that unlocks an ability or gives you a permanent stat boost. While it doesn't re-invent the wheel, GKE does enough things right to be a fun playthrough for those looking for an arcade-style experience. Having said that, there are two issues in particular which really bugged me, so heed this warning: 1) The automatic scrolling occasionally stops to allow you to choose what direction to move in. This allows for branching paths or the ability to backtrack, which is fine. The problem is that in vertically-scrolling areas, it is FAR too easy to accidentally start scrolling back down where you came from when you wanted to keep going up. There is no buffer between when the scrolling stops and when you get to choose your direction, so if you're close to the bottom of the screen and moving down (say, to pick up a coin) at the moment scrolling stops then you're instantly going to change direction and slowly scroll back down to the last point where you can change direction. This is infuriating and it happens all the time. 2) I mentioned the runes which I think are a great idea. One of the runes, however, grants you the ability to dash. While a sudden burst of speed can, in fact, be very useful for getting out of harm's way or positioning yourself for an attack, the problem is the dash is activated by double-tapping in the direction you want to dash. Since the nature of navigating between enemy bullets involves lots of short-stopping and quick changes of direction, I ended up often dashing by accident, often directly leading to me taking damage. Since the B button and the L and R triggers do essentially the same thing, I would have liked to be able to assign the dash ability to one of these buttons to prevent activating it accidentally. So while those two issues did interfere with my ability to enjoy GKE, overall I still had a good time and considered the game worth playing.
Buen shoot'em up que entretiene.
