Boring as hell...
I purchased GEOCORE back in 2017 and really enjoyed how much like DESCENT is was. I was sitting here in 2023 and said to myself, "I haven't played GEOCORE since 2017? I guess it's time to play it!" The game is STILL in Early Access and hasn't been updated since ...2021. There was a single player campaign that looked like the promo video, but that is now gone, as in basic linux support unless you play off your OS drive and used compatibility mode....which makes it NOT Linux compatible in my opinion. No reason to try it on my Winwoes drive as I'm sure it's the same. The single player mission I tried playing was..... a joke. I was on top of a proceduraly generated....surface... of something that reminded me of the surface of the Death Star. A voice tells me that there's a generator that's out in section "C-4" and to go check it out... but I have no way to figure where that is ...or if it's even part of the game and I can actually find and investigate. While the surface of this... Small Moon that is really a space station... resembles the Death Star, my ship is no longer a fast, sleek killing machine, but rather..... welll... I think I made someone mad and they gave me the slowest thing they could find sitting around! Again., no map... no boost and slower than some peoples ability to accept that TRUMP LOST. This is not the game I played at all 6 years ago and it looks like there's no continuing development happening. Elon will probably sell Twit'r before this is finished, so save yourself a few bucks and just skip it. To say I'm disappointed and wish I could get a refund is an understatement, but then I've been disappointed by others before, and this is no exception, but at least I can save you, oh wonderous reader, a few bucks you could use to get some STARBUCKS or a burger or some other game that is worth your hard earned cash. And if you're a fan of the Twit or the Traitor... there's a generator over in section C-4 that's out. Go check it out....
I just met a very dedicated and pretty cool game developer, psionik, and took a ride with him and 2 other Descent Rangers through his game Geocore, which is available on steam. The game is in alpha and about to go beta so for the small $10 fee I got it. After a quick but in-depth set-up I hopped into the Fury, complete with an arsenal of weapons that could rip a tank a new one and we toured the map. This overcharged pyro-style wonder has got the feel down. I mean it could fly like D1 with the right tri-chording feel, it has the after burners, weapons and feel of D2 & D3 too. To say the least, I was impressed. The other rangers were also impressed and I just wanted to give him a thumbs up and a recommendation and provide a video link of the match we just had. http://www.twitch.tv/tsunami_k/v/33285714 If you have questions you can find him in the mumble chatroom mumble.descentrangers.com on port 31393.
I really want to advocate for this title, but unfortunately, it seems that the developer has moved on to other endeavors (no updates since 2018.) As of right now, it generates random levels in single-player which you just sort of... go through until you die? I haven't found an end to one yet, and likely won't. The weapons you're given seem fine, but the aiming feels sluggish even after increasing the mouse sensitivity. If you're looking for a 6DOF game to play, there are better offerings on Steam: - ZeroGrave - Overload - Retrovirus - Forsaken Remastered
One word: Overload... buy it! I wish the developer here nothing but the best. But there is really no game here yet. If you are looking for Descent, I highly suggest Overload from the original developers of Descent. It's the real deal.
This game has come a long way fora one manned project and I still have hope for it, it just adds more content to the 6DoF Descent like game universe, I still hope Geo World will improve over the years. Flight control feels good now, it just needs more colors , dynamics and bots added so you can play against robots in Single player mode, that would be nice. But then again I will have patience with this one. every new game deserves a chance :) I Do recommend this game for every Descent and 6DoF fans out there.
If you're a Descent fan and find this game for under US$ 5.00, give it a try. This was ONE GUY'S labor-of-love homage to the Descent legacy, made while players were being strung along for years, by the "Descent:Underground" and "Descent (2019)" vaporware projects (thankfully, we eventually at least got "Overload"). Lacking the support of a whole production studio, this game lacks Overload's polish and drama, and some technical glitches remain. But taken on its own merits, and taken for what it is rather than what "Descent:Underground" promised, it is a worthy companion to the legacy.
After playing for a bit, I can see something greater that can possibly come from this beginning. The graphics themselves aren't terrible, but overall the graphics need a bit of polishing (especially the copious amounts of dense fog that kills the vision beyond a logical point. Definitely need to add individual options for that PLEASE!!!), and the robots look too... what word can I use? Not boring, but maybe a bit unimaginative, and limited? (Not all robots need gun-arms. Tubbs punched the ♥♥♥♥ out of you in Descent 3, and in the first 2, you had swingarms. Maybe add Katana or Bore-like robot with speed for close combat?) Obviously the AI isn't set in stone, and the spawnpoints need to have a controlled algorithm so they stop spawning at a certain amount of bots, or this just becomes an arcade game about points instead of actual substance. I like the weapon graphics though. They seem a bit.. 2D maybe? Probably could benefit from enemies using a variant of the same thing that the Fury has. Different color/damage/strengths. The controls feel VERY descent-like, the keyboard ramping might want to be an option for giving remove/reduce so the ship moves with proper key presses and reaction time. The mouse seems a bit draggy as well, but not horribly. I don't know how many people are working on this project, but it deserves some attention, and maybe some help to move it along. I think with a bit of story and some help, this game could definitely attact a new generation of 6DoF pilots. It does have strong competition with Descent: Underground, and Overload, though, which are being worked on with groups of people from the Descent and of-the-like industry, and I'm sure a larger budget. If you want to grab a cool little blast em up game that you can share with your friends, its worth grabbing, especially on sale. Scoffing at a work of art, or a sculpture before its finished is ignorance. Keep working, and I'll keep watching. Good luck and Godspeed creator!
GAME NOT RECOMENDABLE , NOBODY PLAYING IN MULTIPLAYER !!
This game is incredibly unpolished, that being said, it is nice to see an indie dev. working for years on a game like this. I got a steam account originally just to get this game, and it is still getting updates. Please make the single player more robost though, but thanks for working so hard as it is.
