I really liked the game! It gives some stop motion animation feeling, and nightmare before Christmas vibe. Just be sure to sit in chair you can turn around in, or stand.
A charming tale that immerses you in a magical world. It's a play, not a game, so sit back and enjoy the story.
Gloomy Eyes VR, developed by 3DAR and Atlas V and published by ARTE France, is a narrative-driven virtual reality experience that leans heavily into atmosphere, emotion, and visual artistry rather than traditional gameplay mechanics. Framed as a dark fairy tale, it transports players into a world where the sun has disappeared, plunging humanity into endless night and awakening the dead. Within this perpetual twilight, society fractures under fear and superstition, and zombies—once human—are hunted and forced into hiding. Against this bleak backdrop, the story follows Gloomy, a gentle and introspective young zombie, and Nena, a human girl raised in darkness, whose unlikely bond becomes the emotional core of the experience. Rather than functioning as a conventional VR game with complex mechanics or player-driven problem solving, Gloomy Eyes presents itself more as an interactive animated film. The world unfolds through carefully crafted diorama-style scenes that the player can observe from multiple angles. Using six degrees of freedom movement, you lean in, peer around structures, and shift your perspective to follow characters as the story progresses. This design choice creates a sense of intimacy, as if you are peering into a living storybook brought to life in three-dimensional space. The interactivity is subtle and observational, prioritizing immersion over challenge. The narrative is delivered with strong voice performances that lend weight and personality to the unfolding events. The narration guides the emotional tone, weaving themes of love, prejudice, loneliness, and hope into a cohesive arc. Gloomy and Nena’s relationship serves as both a literal and symbolic beacon of light within a hostile world. Their journey touches on universal themes of acceptance and resilience, presenting a simple yet heartfelt message about bridging divides in a world consumed by fear. While the plot follows a familiar fairy-tale structure, its sincerity and atmospheric execution give it lasting impact. Visually, Gloomy Eyes VR is one of the most striking aspects of the experience. The art style blends gothic whimsy with melancholic beauty, evoking comparisons to stylized dark fantasy films. Characters are expressive and slightly exaggerated, with soft textures and rich color contrasts that stand out against the ever-present darkness. The environments feel handcrafted, almost like miniature theatrical sets filled with intricate details. Because the experience unfolds in VR, the sense of scale and depth enhances the emotional weight of scenes. Watching characters move through layered environments from different vantage points reinforces the illusion of stepping inside a living illustration. The sound design further amplifies immersion. The soundtrack balances subtle melancholy with moments of warmth, supporting the emotional beats of the story without overwhelming them. Ambient effects—rustling wind, distant murmurs, soft environmental cues—enhance the sense of being physically present in the space. Combined with narration and voice acting, the audio elements create a cohesive sensory experience that feels cinematic rather than game-like. One of the defining characteristics of Gloomy Eyes VR is its deliberate pacing. It does not rush the viewer with rapid action or complex objectives. Instead, it encourages observation and reflection. Scenes unfold gradually, allowing the player to absorb environmental details and emotional nuances. This slower rhythm reinforces the fairy-tale tone but may not satisfy players seeking traditional gameplay depth. The experience is relatively short, and its replay value lies more in revisiting the artistry and story than in discovering branching paths or alternative outcomes. For VR enthusiasts, Gloomy Eyes demonstrates the medium’s potential for storytelling. By using immersive perspective rather than mechanical complexity, it transforms narrative consumption into something spatial and tactile. The ability to physically lean closer to characters or change viewing angles adds a layer of engagement that flat-screen storytelling cannot replicate. It feels like being invited into the pages of a darkly beautiful storybook. However, its focus on presentation over interaction may divide audiences. Those expecting puzzles, exploration mechanics, or skill-based challenges might find it limited. The experience is closer to an animated feature with interactive camera control than to a traditional game. Yet for players open to narrative experimentation within VR, this artistic focus becomes its greatest strength. Ultimately, Gloomy Eyes VR stands as a testament to storytelling within immersive technology. It prioritizes emotion, atmosphere, and artistic expression over conventional mechanics, delivering a haunting yet hopeful tale about connection in a fractured world. Through its striking visuals, strong performances, and thoughtful use of virtual reality space, it offers a memorable journey that lingers beyond its runtime. For those seeking a narrative-driven VR experience that feels intimate and visually captivating, Gloomy Eyes provides a uniquely poetic and evocative adventure. Rating: 8/10
Niedlich.
It's a nice story shown in an unusual way. It was good. Would recommend a headset with OLED.
