B+ Hockey Franchise Simulator What makes it fun: Tons of leagues to play in, with a giant player pool to try and find just the right fit for your roster. More than one way to build a team and win. Strategy, chemistry, and roles matter. In-game tactics actually work. Just enough variance in the game systems to make it seem real without feeling like the game cheats (Chemistry, development, hot/cold streaks, etc.), or that it's a giant optimization problem with a clear answer. I actually like the live game graphics. Not everything needs to be hyper-realistic. What kills the fun: Crashes regularly. Twice, I've had to give up on careers because the game can't advance past a certain date without crashing. UI could use a bit of polish, just to make life easier. Ex. multi-select players to add to a watch list instead of clicking every single one. I appreciate that the team added the NCAA, but player recruiting is very tedious. It could use a re-think. Maybe steal some ideas from the old EA NCAA Football series. Scouting search could use an extra filter option to exclude players that have already signed to a college program, too, just like excluding players with rights from other leagues.
As an NHL nerd, this satisfies much of what EA fail to do with their franchise mode. This is not perfect, but I like that they have real coaches, owners and stuff. I also like negotiating contracts and trades. Being denied a trade because that player flashes his NMC or M-NTC because he doesn't want to play for my team can be frustrating, but is mostly refreshing and realistic, and at the end of the day, that's why I'm here.
My GM is over 120 years old. I have successfully out Lou Lamoriello'd Lou Lamoriello.
The most overview of overview you can get. Game plays well for about 50 hours. Gameplay loop is solid and has interesting nuance. There are very exploitable bugs, especially in the CHL and Create league modes. I give the dev team credit, they are awesome. Solid 9/10 for the first 50, 7/10 for the rest. Good game overall.
Unfortunately, this didn't do it for me. I think it's overly too complicated... I played for about an hour and gave up. Instead of playing an actual hockey game I wanted to play more of a manager/simulation game. While this is that, it was way too complicated where I didn't understand what was happening most of the time and the screen layout was confusing. Unless you are REALLY looking for an in-depth hockey manager game and willing to spend hours understanding the mechanisms, then this is could work for you. But if you are more casual like myself and want something fun to pick up and simulate, then it probably won't work.
For the life of me I can never figure out free agency in this game, no matter how long I play it.
getting better
Battled my way through the QMJHL and won back-to-back titles. Signed with the Florida Panthers. Drafted and traded for tons of my Jr players. Started 4-22-3 and got fired less than halfway through the season. Had to sign a contract with the SPHL to keep my coaching dreams alive. 10/10 would recommend
A fun manager system
Love it. My wife hates me now, but I love it.
