I'm an older gamer, I played NES growing up, but I'm missing a lot of context for this 1983 arcade release. I'd love to know how it felt playing it back then. On my PC, today, not so impressive. The animation is nice, with lots of death scenes, and very smooth transitions, but nothing to blow you away. Essentially it's a QTE game. The Steam version lets you use an onscreen indicator to tell you when to push a button, but even then the timing window is incredibly strict. And you also spend all your time watching that, missing 75% of the actual animations that are happening. With the original cabinet, I can't even imagine how much it would have cost to clear. I'm not sure I could do it with $50 of quarters. You can turn on that true arcade mode here, but I'm not looking to make myself suffer.
6/10
[EN]
How Many Times Did You Die?
Dragon's Lair is impressive for its animation and art style. The gameplay is simple: you use the arrow keys to move and click on the sword to attack. It's all about timing through quick-time events. It's short, but it offers us two game difficulties (Easy and Hard), two game modes (Arcade and Home versions), and achievements. You can also watch the game as a movie (with or without the death animations). It's a good time killer, honestly. [PT]
Quantas Vezes Morreram?
Recomendo
so many wasted quarters.. glad I saw the end game. Oddly.. it works on linux!
Yep, it's just like the coin-op laserdisk i used to play in the 80s. There, it sucked quarters (as it was designed to) due to unreasonable timing requirements to make the correct combination of moves. Here, it sucks sanity. Avoid, unless you enjoy nostalgic mental punishment.
Booted up Dragon’s Lair expecting retro charm, got a medieval version of Simon Says that punishes you like you owe it money. The animation is gorgeous in that Saturday morning cartoon way, but the gameplay aged about as well as milk in July. Cool to experience once just to say you did it, but after a few runs I felt like I was being farmed for content by the game itself. Wouldn’t recommend unless you enjoy pain as a hobby. [6/10]
OH the NOSTALGIA!!! YESSS!!!
Basically one big "press the right button or die" game. Not running around or fighting stuff. Old-school, and, unforgiving, but kinda addicting once you get into the flow.
