This game is thrilling and addicting. The nested exploration, the upgrade collection, the searching for secrets, the surrealism and the dreamlike sense gotten from the alien enemies and barely-recognizable blocky forms; it all combines to create something that feels equally out of a trip and out of a nightmare. I love everything about this game. The programmer art textures, the utterly bizarre enemies and their developer sounds, the fun weapons that get silly and even ridiculous as they're upgraded. Even the little photos/pieces of drawn art strewn around the game are charming and make me want to search for more. Worth every dollar I spent on it and I'll be playing more hours for sure.

stupid mahogany tree
I'm okay with an ugly game if it's fun, but this one falls short in basic game design principles. For a game that's been in development for over a decade, these basics should have had plenty of time to cook. The concept is interesting, but the execution is deeply unpleasant. As one concrete example: there needs to be more indication of what direction attacks are coming from when enemies are shooting at the player/the attacks need to be more visible. If this was a free and open-source game, I'd have good things to say about it, even if I didn't enjoy it. For a game that I paid money for -- I'm sorry, it's not acceptable to me. I'm glad some people enjoy it, but the "overwhelmingly positive" reviews misled me into believing this was actually going to be fun -- for me, it's not.
That one dream when you have fever. Its so beautiful I want to cry
