A disappointing watered down tonyhawk game mixed with devil may cry with more of the crying. Being a lover of older skateboarding games and hack and slash and finding new love for rpgs, i was pretty hyped for this game. Art direction is awesome along with some fun characters I wish we got to see more of. And the system is okay but the overall lack of skate moves and floaty feel to skating, the game makes it a passable skater game in my books. Again Skating feels floaty and is going to be unsatisfying to most tony hawk game players, and I know combat was a the main part of this game, It does get added points for some fun enemy design and fun perks buying clothing, tats, and stickers, but this feels very much like a bottom to mid tier skate game. Levels also feel like they are very much the same. The style of the art looks fantastic and i think spot on for skate culture but making each level feel different would have made better replay-ability. It still feels very unfinished which devs have came to say that they were rushed to finish it. They said that the main story is "done" but honestly it feels way too short of a game especially when levels can be beat pretty fast. On top of it all, the game is still extremly buggy so much that they added a button in the menu to bring your character back from a game breaking glitch. Theres an obvious passion for with the devs in greating a very unique skating combat game but I think it likley game to the lack of funds or possible payment and lack of time they had to complete the game. I'm sure the game will add some things that very much feel missing but I dont think that will make the overall game feel like a game I want to come back to. If one of the devs is somehow reading this, I think your team should have went full in on at least the skating part of the game with small bits of combat or vice versa instead of a half and half which made the game feel very unfulfilling. I hate leaving a negative review but overall I didnt enjoy the game. I have faith that this team will bring an awesome game in the future if given the proper resources, time and payment. I'd even say THE SKATING GAME that will bring skater games back into the mainstream.
Really mixed bag, I think it doesn't know quite if it wants to be a skateboarding game or a hack and slash roguelike. The base movement on board is way too slow, slower than just walking in most circumstances and momentum is an absolute mess. There's no way to keep a combo going really well after taking off vert (no revert or leveling out in midair). Often things feel sort of disjointed and the only time you have momentum is hitting buttons to attack. The two systems feel completely at odds with one another rather than synergizing and creating what should feel like effectively sword drive-bys (skate-bys?). I think the skating at it's core needs to be brought much more to the forefront as the way you interact with the world in this game, with the sword maybe being used as simply a heavy attack with the tricks serving as light attacks? Really anything to give the skating a little more comfortable flow with the combat. The physics are really floaty as well which is okay during the brief times you're going fast but you spend too much time being sloooooooooow.
cool concept, poorly executed
Another skating game with no momentum and zero satisfaction to performing tricks or controlling yourself in general. The controls are laid out extremely clumsily and more or less necessitate a keyboard, which in itself is a crime for a skating game, let alone that the game's movement isn't really fun to work around. It's a deep shame that great music and aesthetics are put forward for such lacking gameplay.
Studio rushed to finish before closed. Playable but not great
Was working great before the changes now the games is even less fun and more restrictive
I didnt grow up playing but 1 THPS game so maybe im not as adept at this stuff but idk whats peoples beef with this game its hella fun
fix the game, like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
I might've joined on this game late, but I can say that I've enjoyed my time with Helskate so far. I love the concept of combining skateboarding, roguelike, and combat that wasn't done before. While there's a set of features I'd love added in the game like reverts, boneless, extra manual tricks, customizing the skate hub, maybe some additional features other than Free Skate, I'd say this game still has its charm. So far there's no support and attention from the devs or the community as far as I looked into their sources, but by this point I'm gonna believe they still have the focus to work on this game as much as they could. I point out that if there's an update or rise of community then I'd change my review, but that was too pretentious of me to say and I apologize for the unnecessary downplay and lack of helpfulness. As said, I'll keep playing the game, and I'll wish the devs the best of time they have to improve the game or if they plan to work on another. My recommendation is mainly for if you like the concept, or willing to buy it on a sale like I did. Hopefully it's the last time I had to keep changing my mind like this.
