Forgotten Hill: Mementos — 8.6h played | 35/35 achievements | Steam Deck: Unknown

TL;DR — Creepy Victorian point-and-click puzzles in a “nice little town with horrible secrets” vibe. It does the job well… but if you hate pixel-hunting and that childish-yet-gross art style, you’ll suffer like I did.
Forgotten Hill: Mementos is the kind of point-and-click where you stare at a screen thinking “there’s obviously something here”… then you click on the exact wrong corner 27 times until the game finally admits you were right all along. That’s the core loop: explore, collect weird items, solve puzzles, unlock more weirdness. The atmosphere is clearly the selling point. You’re in a Victorian-flavored, rotten little community where everything feels off: secrets, rituals, unsettling characters, and that constant “something’s not human here” energy. The story is actually solid for the genre: it keeps the mystery moving, and the worldbuilding is made to feel nasty on purpose. Now the visuals. I’m not a fan of the art style: simple, almost childish, but paired with grotesque details. I can respect the idea (it makes the creepiness hit harder), but personally it just doesn’t click with me. I’m giving it a 3/5 because it feels like a deliberate artistic choice. If it wasn’t intentional, it would be a 2. Puzzle difficulty sits in the “fair enough” zone: not brain-melting, not brain-dead, but still very dependent on observation and trial. Tech-wise it’s clean and stable, and the audio does a great job supporting the mood. Recommendation: I’m not the target audience (I don’t love clicky puzzle hunts), but if you like eerie point-and-click mystery with a twisted vibe, this one absolutely delivers.
About the art style (why I’m not a fan)
The visuals are a deliberate “storybook-but-wrong” style: lots of sepia tones, flat cartoon rooms, simple textures… and then sudden gore/creepy faces on top. I get the intention (cute style + disturbing content = discomfort), but to me it often looks more cheap than artistic. It’s clean enough, just not pretty or consistent enough to pull me in.
Simply disappointing...
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ This game tries to go for a spooky horror theme, but the story and the writing in general comes off ridiculously bad and boring. The first half of the game is way too easy, contained, quite Escape Room-y, but the second half for some reason transforms into an open-world puzzle adventure? Not sure if I like this design direction. Moving around feels clunky and outdated in this part, bc you have to travel around a lot. There are many obscure interactions that border on bad game design, and quite a few puzzles simply just arent that interesting and/or fun. Occasionally, there are some genuinely good puzzles here, but the juice is not worth the squeeze, if you know what I am saying. I am not saying you shouldn't play it, if you have 2-3 hours to spare, maybe give it a go. It is not a long game. But I would't recommend wasting your time on this one.
