IT's a solid Final Fantasy game if you can get past how hard the game railroads you. The story itself is great, but the gameplay is lacking.
most people had issues with the game not running. i agree this game is poorly optimized for pc but in my exprience it was no issues at all. only issue is the fighting scene imo are too long and boring.
honestly, a good game. it gets too much flak. yes, its quite linear until closer to the end but i think the battle system is fantastic and its satisfying to upgrade characters. the weapon upgrading/crafting is a little complex so i'd recommend following a guide so you can just go down the right path for the best weapons and materials for upgrading and not waste too much time. graphics are amazing.
Go into it for the narrative, it's a foundational great storyline but it tried a new incorporation of gameplay mechanics that pulls away heavily from anything previously in the series.
I fully believe its EASIER to buy a PS3 and play this game there. Genuinely the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pc port ive EVER had the horror to experience.
Absolute garbage. Three things stand out to me having completed this game: exploration (garbage), story (strong moments, mostly weak) and combat (garbage). Exploration is of course hallways. It's actually just hallways. Anyone who compares this to FFX is either lying or incapable of critical thought. FFX had minigames, it had branching paths, and moreso it had a narrative that justified that linearity within the gameplay. FFXIII just has... nothing. There is no pleasure to be had in exploring this world, because you're not exploring it. You're walking down a corridor so you can hit flags to trigger cutscenes. The story does have its moments. People are overly harsh on the use of fantasy terminology, the opening chapters do indeed have a habit of throwing words at you undefined, but later have a character very bluntly define that word, sometimes multiple times. Similarly, people are overly harsh on Vanille's writing, she is very obviously and intentionally written as a naive outsider, and that does pay off in her twist background reveal. The best part of the story was when Lightning turned to Hope about a third of the way through and said 'wait we're cringe, we should stop being cringe' - the characters were very justified in being cringe, they were teenagers and young adults processing a series of very traumatic events, and I enjoyed the story of the highly JRPG-coded way in which they processed that trauma - but once they achieve that character growth the story has another 2/3 of a game where all six characters are just friends setting out to save the world from Mr Big Bad. Combat sucks. I minimised auto of Auto-Battle so I could be as engaged as possible in the combat. I was still exhausted of spamming A, because the optimal move was to do the same thing five times in a row. I was still exhausted of my allies not targeting the enemy I had just staggered. I was fed up with the lack of menu QoL features in a game so menu-heavy, such as button buffering, and an enemy list so I could see debuff timers of all enemies. And, when I did use Auto-Battle, I was frustrated with how frequently the game would queue AoE attacks in single-target situations. This game is an embarrassment for SE. Of the modern FFs, this is perhaps the worst - definitely worse than XVI and XII, perhaps beating out XV. Sazh was the only consistent redeeming quality: as a responsible adult and advocate of sensible bedtimes, he brought something unique and appreciable to this JRPG party.
