I'm still currently playing through Chapter 11 and just got the Chocobo so I can get some gil and upgrade my equipment. Interesting story, memorable characters and great music but I really don't like the combat which made me drop this game so many times and finished other Final Fantasy games instead. I kept coming back because I really wanted to see the story through. I also had to download the English voice and FMVs since there's no language options available and some mods for better performance and some light graphical improvements.
COMBAT
Maybe I'm just playing it wrong but the combination of the camera moving around constantly during battle, no control over movement of the party members (especially against a group of 5 or more enemies) while trying to keep the party leader alive because if the leader gets downed it's game over (which is a first I've seen in FF; at least the ones I've played and just WHY is that?) and I would start the entire fight again plus the stagger system which I hate so much makes every enemy encounter feel like such a slog and just stresses the hell out of me, essentially micromanaging simulator. But what I really liked about the combat which is the Paradigm Shift which is basically on the go Job switching. I've seen people really like the combat in XIII and I've tried to like it but I'm already in Chapter 11 and I don't think it will still pick up from there. The equipment upgrade system wasn't explained that well in-game and I had to look up how to efficiently upgrade my equipment and understand how it works. The bunch of gacha games I've played was easier to understand than what FFXIII had with it's one sentence explanation in the menus.

Final Fantasy 13 is another popular and iconic installment in the franchise. It also marks the return of Tetsuya Nomura as the main designer, as he had skipped FF12. Pros: + Decent story + Main characters are hit and miss. There are some beloved, iconic characters, such as Lightning + Brilliant art direction, color palette, character, and overall design by legendary Tetsuya Nomura + Combat has been improved from all older titles, and changed from the mmo-style gameplay FF11 and FF12 has. It is still hybrid real-time atb-based, however this time they give you the option to select automated combat or selective to chain your own abilities. There is also role assignment via ‘Paradigm Shift,’ which is where most of the strategy comes in + Superb, memorable soundtrack + Menus and sound design are satisfying and pleasant + Linear gameplay + They did away with a lot of the tedium older FF titles had + Most of the visuals hold up very well + Supports 60 fps, additional camera settings, and difficulty options changeable during gameplay Cons: - Frequent crashes from this pc port, even on high-end hardware - Main characters are hit and miss. There are some annoying or cringey characters, such as Vanille - You can only control a specified single character in a party, and it is Game Over if said playable character gets KO’ed and allies still stand; said playable characters cannot be revived - Missing features, such as volume settings and inability to quit the game using a controller, unlike older FF titles had - Has some compatibility issues with Steam Overlay, but nothing game-breaking Mixed: ~ Combat is still mostly strategic hybrid turn-based and real-time, has some trial and error, and still lacks player agency most FF titles allow. Fortunately, there are a generous amount of save points, pre-battle checkpoints for quick retries, as well as an easy mode for those who prefer more traditional and involved combat ~ Generally more feminine than other FF titles In conclusion, after replaying this game decades later from my first play-through, I can say I still enjoy it and I can recommend it because of this, and because the pros far outweigh the cons. Overall Rating: 4 out of 5
d'un ennui monstre
I am so annoyed I tried everything and it keeps randomly crashing.
Overall this is a great game with great story, great graphics and great strategy turned based game, there is nothing like ff13, no strategy game play the same as it. However the lack of mobility in combat of ff13 frustrates me more than anything, once bomb(monster name) come swarming you, it will be instant dead as the only way to move your character is by attacking the enemies, that way once you are distant away, you can switch to sentinel mode to provoke the enemies and prevent from team wipe. However, it became useless if the first thing the enemies does are swarming you with 3-4 bombs, if that happened, you can only wait for inevitably dead. Have to spend resources to make yourself hard to be track with item before approaching bomb(imo the strongest monsters in the game), you can't win against bomb unless you stagger them quick enough before they exploded. If you are here only for the story, generally you don't need equipment upgrade until chapter 11, I thought I can breeze through the enemies till the end however, battle is getting unfair and unfair starting chapter 11, enemies hit harder and tankier even in normal mode, forcing you to upgrade your weapons and accessories, aka forcing you to grind gil. So expect some grinding once you reached chapter 11 aka the starting point of the game where now you finally can choose your party members instead of a fixed party in previous chapters.
10/10 experience on Steam Deck. Gourgeous, fun and emotional.
