Reviews
Pros
1. Amazing QoL changes compared to previous Fatal Frame games. Controls have a lot of weight but very comfortable, which improves atmosphere in gameplay. 2. Great performance, smooth gameplay. 3. Graphics look amazing. Very creepy and has very thick atmosphere. Great character models as well. Modernized but still very Fatal Framey. 4. No bugs encountered after 30+ hours. 5. Incredibly unique and interesting story. Very disturbing and unsettling. Amazing pacing as well.
Cons
1. Combat can feel tedious sometimes. Combat is slow paced and it takes ages to beat some enemies. Some enemies are very tanky. Combat is not as fun compared to the other Fatal Frame games imo. 2. This is not much of a con, but you're required to do a little bit of reading to understand aspects of the story. If you don't mind a little reading, then you're in for a treat. 3. A NIGHTMARE to get all achievements.
Overall: 7/10
The game feels like a slog in some parts because of the combat, but that's the only negative thing I see in the game. The game has great graphics, great characters, great optimization, very thick atmosphere, and an incredible story. Discovering mysteries left and right was absolute peak. Would recommend.
It pains me a lot to give this game a not recommended with how good the visuals and atmosphere is but man the combat is an absolute slog to go through, the ghosts are HP sponges that take way too long to be defeated and the game throws way too many of them too often, the fatal frame mechanic which was arguably the most fun thing to do in the other games has been ruined with this shutter chance thing they added. I completed Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and despite a few things I didn't like about the game I had a great time with it so much so that I bought Crimson Butterfly right after and this game so far is leaving me mostly frustrated with the clash between visuals - atmosphere and the frustrating, tedious gameplay.
its cool
Fatal Frame
Come back diva its hand holding time
When I first played this game on the PS2, I was completely in love! It felt so fresh and innovative at the time, unlike anything else I’d experienced. This modern remake captures that same spirit very well and really brings the experience forward. The only minor issue I have is that I would have liked to see the combat system feel a bit more refined and updated — it isn’t bad by any means, just occasionally a little clunky, though one could argue that clunkiness is part of the game’s charm. Overall it’s a great game, and I’m hopeful we’ll get another remake or even an entirely new entry in the series down the line!
This game got shown the same love RE2 did with RE2 Remake, and then some. Story beats are all the same, cutscenes with similar shots, but more cinematic. Combat completely redone, much harder. And the addition of side stories that impact the endings we get, in addition to deepening the lore of characters you only really saw in ghost pictures or expanded in documents are now, also makes you care a lot more for the characters you never knew had as much depth. Phenomenal remake of one of the best horror games of all time. Pls Koei don't remake 3, it's too scary and the world isn't ready..................................................
This game is so close to being a perfect horror game. The presentation, sound, and area layouts all blend together beautifully to create a tense and scary experience. It's hamstrung a bit by lack of polish, like incorrect controller glyphs and seeing objects load into the environment in real time (Kurosawa House Altar Room is particularly egregious). I found myself going back and doing all of the side stories, as I was enamored with the story and world presented in the game. While I am glad I did this, it could be frustrating at times as enemies would constantly respawn even if I equipped a charm that was supposed to reduce it. Furthermore, enemies becoming enraged (regaining health and becoming significantly more aggressive) made me want to unslot all of my prayer beads and shove them up the game director's ass. It is not scary, or enjoyable, but incredibly tedious. The stalker type enemies are also annoying rather than scary. Barring these unfortunate design choices, this is an incredible game. I was eagerly following the story, and on my toes the entire time I was exploring a new area. Exploration is satisfying and rewarding. The ominous music and ambiance mixed with loud clunks and clatters of any objects you may have unwittingly stepped on keeps you fully aware at all times. Combat can drag a bit for reasons I mentioned earlier, but it feels great to set new high scores and see your Camera Obscura upgrades do their work in real time. A must play for horror fans!
