Dang this game is old. I had to dust it off my digital shelf. When I tried this at release date, i was slightly turned off because of the jagged edges. With my super quantum built computer and valve index, it is a true site to behold. Kidding aside. if you loved the scene with HAL 2000 and the astronaut in 2001 space odyssey, this game will get you so close to that feeling of being alone in space and trying to survive. I don't regret buying this long ago and I am so excited to play this on my 2080ti and vive pro.....(just finished my valve index order) Highly recommended!
Has to have a large space to move around and no ability to move using the pads. Absolutely no good if you have standing space only. If they allowed you to move forward and back a little using the control pads, it would help. If you drop something outside of the chaperone area, forget it, you are not going to pick it up unless you have the grab helper on that teleports it to your hand which really ruins the immersion. I can't recommend this game as it limits players to only those who have a large space to move around. But for the short time I played it, there does seem to be a lot of interesting things to do. Refunded because it's unplayable for me. If the devs add the ability to move a bit using the control pads, I'd probably buy it again.
Short But Sweet: A Far Beyond: A Space Odyssey Review The game starts you off, in cryo-sleep, being woken by your on-board A.I, Jim. He explains to you, that you are the last of your species alive, and you have been in cryo-sleep for about 135 years. your star-ship, the Genesis, was headed towards a habitable planet, the 3rd planet of the Sol System, where your mission was to restart your species with genetic batter, and incubators. but there's a catch, your star-ship's generator has broken. you do have solar panels, but they are weak, and so they can only be used at blue stars to charge your on-board battery, which of all things, powers your life support. Gameplay: Felt like a god-d*mn star mechanic, if only for a handful of hours. Replay ability: Meh, if you do it once, you really get the gist of the game, there's no extended mode, nor endless mode to be found, which would enhance the game length and replay value. the game was so short, I didn't even get to upgrade my probes before I reached the conclusion. Graphics: I tried to lay against a couch in game, only to end up on my a*s, feeling like an idiot cause a video game tricked me into trying to lie against an object that didn't exist. Story: Barely any, but what story there is, is incredibly sweet. If the developers decided to expand upon the story, make the campaign longer, or put in random events, I would gladly throw money at them. it's an insightful commentary on the hubris of humanity, and how ultimately, we never progress past being violent jerks, even if we do have giant star-ships and laser rifles. Glitches: One. I encountered a small, yet ultimately fatal bug, where one of my heat-sinks for digger master got stuck in front of another heat-sinks slot, rendering them both useless, to the point where I decided to restart the game, since I wasn't far along in the story. Final Score: 7/10-8/10. I couldn't decide on a singular score based on one play-through alone, so I gave a range. This is the score range you should expect for your play-through, allowing for glitches, and mistakes to affect the score.
+Fun +Creative +Roguelike +Awesome -Controls a little glitchy 4/5 This is a really awesome, different take on a roguelike game. If you like Rogue-likes and games that really make you think this is for you! Let`s call it simply a failed attempt to make something good with open space content. also noticed failure with spacial orientation and controls.
Game is stuck on French language setting. Tripple checked steam language setting and even though it says English, the game stays in French. Can't even play it, money wasted.
Seems empty, need a campaign or something. more content etc.
I got stuck several times, trying to find what I am expected to do shouldn't be considered as a puzzle game mechanic this way. It was unnecessaryly boring.
A couple years after release, and I must say, this is still one of my favorite VR titles in my library. I realize a lot of it is just concept for a larger project. However, I do enjoy almost everything about the game. I will never forget the first time I entered the engineering deck and looked around. I was truly awestruck by how much detail they added in there, where it was unnecessary. The first time I grabbed a screwdriver was so cool! When my VR headset bugged out as I was putting down the screwdriver, and I accidentally threw it off the edge, nothing beats the aww crap moment. The game of course has all kinds of issues with VR, one of the problems with early gen games on any new concept. The tech is not there yet, but it shows the great promise of what VR can be. This is still one of the games I show people that want to know what VR can be like.
An excellent game if you're interested in fixing stuff in space. The tutorial is a bit rough, but if you can get past it, the gameplay is surprisingly relaxing - until you run out of time, resources, or leave a probe behind to be lost forever. Definitely enjoy the game and keep coming back for another playthrough over and over.
