I really wanted to get into this. It's got nice music. There's magic... But.. After the fifth or sixth time of wandering into a group of enemies more powerful than I could handle with no option of escape... Ugh. Heck, you can't even jump into the menu and load an earlier save. Nope. Just die, which might take a bit, then you'll respawn at a nearby town.. Or you have to close the game in order to load a previous save, which makes absolutely zero sense. The UI has mobile phone written all over it, which is mildly irritating. Graphically it looks a bit dated since it came out in 2024, it looks more like 2005-2008. Personally I didn't mind the graphics, but they definitely look dated. The writing is lengthy and a mixed bag. There's a degree of humor that's trying to be forced into so many dialogues, but the humor fell flat. The quests feel repetitive.... I guess it simply isn't what I'm looking for in an RPG.
Ugh. Just... just no, man, just no. This game tries to be a whole lot of things at once and fails at every single one. The classic JRPG battles, the souls-like attribute progression, the tree-like progression, but with ability to lock onto only one of advanced classes, the bleak grimdark atmosphere and the slightly cuckoo vibes of ye olden RPGs are all the things I like, but here they just somehow fail to click, both together and with me as a player. Oh and it also has a huge, HUGE map with absolutely nothing to do in at least 80% of it's area. It also has very unintuitive graphic design as to where you can and cannot pass. So prepare to run and get stuck a lot. It is a curious Frankenstein monster of a game, I'll give it that, but I cannot in good conscience give it a good review.
The bones for something solid are there but there's just so many little things that ultimately add up to a frustrating experience. There are things I like in the game. I love the grimdark plague setting, atmospheric music, the art direction and the isometric camera style. These elements are all great and something I hope the devs keep polishing in their next game. Where the issues come into play is basically everything else. The UI is very clearly a mobile port and the controls on both KB/M and controller feel very slapdash. Especially KB/M. I'd have preferred if the game said "use a controller" and didn't even bother instead of the clunk with KB/M. Neither option feels particularly good to use and the in combat menus get very annoying very quickly. Even outside of combat the movement feels incredibly floaty and it's very easy to get stuck on the environment. There IS an "unstick" option but that it's needed at all just shows that the environment wasn't very well thought out. There's plenty of far older isometric games that get this right. The overworld is a big open area that should invite exploration but makes it way WAY too easy to wander into high level areas and have your party wipe. There's no way to easily load a save even if you DO happen to save before triggering a quest that you have no way of knowing you're way too underleveled for. You have to quit the game and reload the save. Again, not a good system, especially with decades of other RPGs to lift mechanics from. There's stats and class skill trees like an RPG but most of them feel about the same. Could've probably just narrowed it down to like 3 or 4 classes and been done with it. Same with gear, skills and even the leveling. A lot of the moves feel like "X move but P U R P L E or Y move but DOT". Stats are laid out in a very souls like manner, but somehow don't have as much impact. Especially with an EXP leveling system instead of the Souls mechanic of leveling up when you choose to. Putting a lot of points into something like Endurance should result in a pretty healthy bump in HP. Instead your health goes up by a touch and your gear seems to make the biggest difference in the game. Either approach (traditional RPG or Souls-like) would've been okay but mashing the two the way this game does doesn't work. Speaking of gear, you find a lot of gear from a lot of merchants very quickly and it feels more like an MMO or ARPG than an RPG in that you don't wanna immediately buy new gear while you're playing and leveling as you're very likely to find something better. Most MMO or APRGs if you're a bit undergeared but leveled to your area you'll struggle but survive. However in Vendir if don't have solid gear for your quest level you wipe. This system feels very much like a mobile game where you'd be pressured to buy some kind of "gold microtransaction pack" or something from the shop to keep up to snuff. Lastly the writing feels like two people's differing visions wrestling for control over the project. Half the characters are edgy grim-dark nihilists and the other half are quirk chungus embodied. It's jarring and doesn't work. Either approach would've worked but it needed to be consistent to be more immersive. Ultimately I am interested in seeing what the devs do next as this game is a notable step up from their last game. I'm really hoping they tweak the formula a bit more and hit it out of the park on their next game.
Great atmosphere, but absolutely dreadful grinding requirement.
I wanted to like this game so very much... but can't. The encounter mechanism is horrible. You roam about the map and unseen encounters simply happen to you. The encounter seem to be of any level range. It might be a rat. It might be something impossible to defeat. This method of generating random, unavoidable encounters does not make the game enjoyable, it makes it frustrating. On the shelf it goes.
Honestly if you change the controls for being to click movement the game would be so much more more enjoyabe... remember you're selling this to PC gamers.. I'm gonna recommend this game for the sounds and potential it could have.
