A jar full of potential with too many technical and narrative cracks
Your fairy self wakes up trapped in a glass jar, sitting on some stranger’s desk, surviving on daily wheat and quiet suspicion. He doesn’t seem hostile, but the situation screams “this won’t end normally”. Add a handful of mysterious artifacts sharing the room and here is the premise that caught instantly my attention. But I’m conflicted here. The pixel art is gorgeous and the whole RPGMaker atmosphere works fine for this kind of small narrative experiment. The environment barely changes, yet it still manages to tell a story through subtle visual shifts. The menu presentation is also surprisingly polished, and with 4 endings plus clear achievements (with help from Google Translate or the community guide), there’s at least a structure pushing you to explore outcomes. Unfortunately, the technical issues destroys the experience for English players. The game requires installing the external RPG Maker VX Ace Run Time Package just to launch properly, and even then the localization is horrible since dialogue text frequently overflows the frame, cutting letters or even entire words. There are no settings whatsoever. No audio controls, no fullscreen toggle, no resolution options, nothing. It feels unfinished rather than minimalist. The story itself also feels thinner than the premise suggests. It leans into creepy territory, but never builds enough depth to fully land the emotional beats. Three endings are bad and one is good, yet some routes feel abrupt.
Trying to escape
, for example, immediately leads to a bad ending without much narrative payoff. Combined with the lack of a dialogue log, the unability to save during choices, and limited skip functionality (Ctrl only speeds text, not actions), replaying for endings becomes unnecessarily tedious. There is potential here. The idea of telling a contained story from inside a jar is good, and visually it already works. But between technical friction and underdeveloped storytelling, the experience ends just as it feels ready to become interesting. If you still plan to try it despite all this, please grab the community guide first and spare yourself the trial-and-error marathon.

Fairy in a Jar reminds me of the golden era of RPG Maker games. And at least for that I'm deeply thankful. There's something I should say before we begin. From what I've gathered, Fairy in a Jar was made for a game jam. If that's really the case, it justifies the little flaws I noticed. You might be wondering if the game is difficult to play — don't worry, it's not. You simply walk from place to place, read dialogue and sometimes make a choice. All the interactive objects are highlighted, you won't miss them. At times it looks clunky, but I appreciated the convenience of never having to check every object just to understand whether I can interact with it. The story isn't deep, but still interesting because you never really know what to expect. You play as a fairy who — you guessed it — somehow ended up in a jar. Why did it happen? Who is the captor? What will the fairy do now? There are four endings, and I actually really liked the bad ones (C and D). True ending (A) was okay, although didn't feel that exciting. I guess the plot is not the strongest point of this game. The atmosphere and the aesthetics are very, very good. First of all, the soundtrack sounds nice and it's memorable, I'm still humming the main melody. And second, the art. Oh, this beautiful art. You can look at the store page and already see how stunning it is. I absolutely loved it, especially the backgrounds. One thing which is objectively bad is English localization. There are some mistakes/typos, and also sometimes the text doesn't fit the speech bubbles. But still, almost always you can understand everything, even if parts of some words are missing. Overall, for a very low price Fairy in a Jar suggests you an interesting story, beautiful art and easy 100% achievements. Especially recommending it to all the fans of RPG Maker games. A charming little story full of twists and turns. I wouldn't want to spoil anything, so I'll keep my praise short. I wasn't expecting to get so thoroughly swept-up in the game's narrative, but the next thing I knew a few hours had passed, just like other times when I'd found a good book that I couldn't put down. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. It sounded like such a simple idea when I read the store page's description, and yet it kept surprising me. Interesting world. Interesting characters. Interesting choices. I recommend it to anyone with an itch for discovery and a free afternoon. This is a great little adventure. Now, TO THE DEVELOPERS/CREATORS of this game, I would just like to mention a couple areas for a few small improvements that could be made for the English translated version: First, the overall translation into English is good, and most of the time the writing flows pretty well. There are a few strange parts where the language used sounds strange, like something from Google Translate instead of something written by a native English speaker. This is not a big issue though, because it all still makes enough sense to be able to follow along, and it's not too often. It's more of a "polishing" sort of suggestion, if that makes sense. Second, the dialogue box tends to cut off some of the words from time to time, which makes me think that the original Chinese characters must have taken up less in-game space than the English words do. This would be a simple fix of just making the English font a little smaller so that it always fits into the window. Again, for any potential players out there, this DOES NOT RUIN the story, as with the help of context clues and the general trajectory of conversations it's easy enough to figure out when it does happen (which isn't too terribly often). And lastly, I'd like to give some personal feedback. I don't know how many other people are like me, but when I first booted up the game, I had a really rough time figuring out how to Start. I clicked it, I tried my gaming controller, and nothing worked. I honestly almost gave up on playing it at all because there was no instruction and nothing I tried did anything. As a last resort, I started pressing keys on my keyboard and eventually stumbled across the Enter button, thank goodness. HOWEVER, it would be my suggestion to please add a little message to the starting page that says something like "click Enter to begin." That would have really helped me out a lot back there, instead of letting me panic. But all things considered, I loved this game; and I look forward to playing another game from you in the future! Thank you and keep up the great work!
