"Chains can be torn off. Even your sister understood the meaning of that. Be it a wild animal, or a genetically modified human. I believe all living things deserve a right to be happy." There are visual novels that tell a sad story, and then there are visual novels that leave a permanent mark on your heart. *eden* is firmly in the latter category. Set on a dying Earth facing inevitable destruction, the story follows Ryou Haruna and Sion, a genetically engineered genius who devoted nearly a century of her life to ensuring humanity's survival. The premise sounds grand and science-fiction heavy, but at its core, *eden* is an intimate story about love, purpose, sacrifice, and finding meaning in the limited time we are given. The scale of the world's tragedy only serves to make the personal moments feel even more precious. What impressed me most is how maturely the story handles its themes. Rather than relying on constant drama or shocking twists, it slowly builds an atmosphere of inevitability. From the very beginning, you understand that this is not a story interested in giving easy answers or convenient miracles. It asks you to cherish the small moments between its characters because they know, and you know, that time is running out. That emotional honesty is what makes the journey so powerful. Sion is one of the most memorable heroines I've encountered in visual novels. Despite being viewed by humanity as a legendary figure, she is ultimately just a lonely girl who has spent most of her life trapped by expectations. Watching her gradually open up and experience ordinary happiness is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Ryou complements her perfectly; beneath his stoic military exterior is someone carrying his own scars and regrets. Their relationship develops naturally, making every interaction feel meaningful. The presentation remains stunning even years after release. The artwork is gorgeous, with detailed backgrounds and expressive character illustrations that create a melancholic yet beautiful atmosphere. The soundtrack deserves special praise as well. Composed by Tenmon, the music perfectly captures both the loneliness of a dying world and the warmth of the bonds formed within it. There were multiple moments where the combination of visuals, music, and writing elevated scenes from merely emotional to unforgettable. I also appreciate that *eden* is a kinetic novel. There are no choices, routes, or alternate endings. Some readers may see this as a drawback, but I believe it benefits the story immensely. The narrative is delivered exactly as intended, allowing the pacing and emotional impact to remain focused from beginning to end. What truly makes *eden* special is its atmosphere. Long after finishing it, I still find myself thinking about its quiet conversations, its themes of mortality, and the way it portrays love in the face of inevitable loss. It is not a visual novel that tries to overwhelm you with endless plot twists; instead, it gently draws you into its world and leaves you emotionally devastated when it's over. If you enjoy visual novels such as *Planetarian*, *AIR*, or other emotional science-fiction stories, *eden* is an easy recommendation. It is relatively short compared to many visual novels, but it accomplishes more emotionally in its runtime than some stories manage in fifty hours. A beautiful, bittersweet masterpiece about humanity's final days and the small moments that make life worth living. My biggest criticism, and the reason I can't quite give it a perfect score, is that I wanted more. The supporting cast is surprisingly memorable despite their limited screen time, and I found myself wishing I could spend longer with many of them. Several characters felt like they had stories left untold, and I would have loved to see additional routes exploring different perspectives and relationships within the world. While the kinetic novel format keeps the narrative focused, it also left me wanting to dive deeper into the lives of characters beyond Ryou and Sion. That said, perhaps that's a testament to how well-written the cast is. When the story ended, I wasn't ready to leave its world behind. **8/10 — The final love story on Earth, and one I will never forget.**
