9/10
This is probably one of the most popular yuri visual novels out there, with quite awesome protagonist and intriguing supporting cast aswell. As the descriptions do mention, there's not much to the plot of the novel unfortunately, so this is one of the weakest parts of the game according to my opinion. While I can't say I didn't enjoy it, there were some moments where I didn't feel as entertained as I had expected to, especially after reading for a while.. To that, I will get to later on. So, the plot aside.. There's some character development to be going around there, but it's nothing special. While the characters do have each unique personalities that makes them easy to remember and to a point even relate to, there is a line where it sorta stops? I'm not sure if I merely stopped recollecting what's going on and remembering it properly at the time, but the development has sorta stopped and nothing much was going on. Just ordinary daily lives of the characters without any changes to them, so to speak. What supports the entire novel so well and so much is the soundtrack. The tracks are made so well and some even perfectly match the atmosphere and the easygoing atmosphere, making it a truly relaxing reading experience. I have totally fallen for that, but even here is the catch.. ... I didn't get too into it earlier on, so returning back to it, the game does have a calendar that makes reminiscing about the days much easier for the reader; Fully finishing the novel requires reading through the entire portrayed days several times, each time from the shoes of a different character, and yet the tracks are always the same during those days. So, reading the novel at once or through longer periods of time is seriously not recommended. It is better to take it at a slower pace, so the music doesn't get too much in the way. I had found myself muting it from time to time, as I was getting headaches from longer periods of reading. What I truly adored about the novel was the art design of the characters. Whoever's drawn those is a genius! Although the game doesn't offer animated character sprites as the modern novels do, it is fully voice acted and offers far easier time understanding where are the characters coming from; That's naturally furthermore enhanced with the days from different characters' perspectives. As a side note warning, and why I hadn't shared any screenshots- The game doesn't support Steam overlay, as far as I recall, and so taking screenshots is simply not possible through the Steam overlay; It may be done so manually, but I'm not going through the hassle. That's been a huge disappointment for me, as the game features soooo many scenes and moments that are just perfect for sharing, yet makes it impossible or difficult to do so. I'd also like to highlight that despite being a yuri visual novel, some affectionate or deep romance isn't to be expected.. That's been another huge bummer for me, because I absolutely enjoy all kinds of novels that do feature those. At the end of the day, I can't say I have been having a bad time, not in the slightest. At the same time however, I can't claim to be overjoyed and all. It's alright, it's satisfying, but nothing special to write a book about. So, whom to suggest this novel, hm? - Definitely to the readers who are into slower paced reading if I assume that the reader reads the entire novel, and to those who do tolerate or enjoy yuri; If the reader however decides to read it just once and from the point of view of the main protagonist, then the novel is quite the shortie, mm. - Likewise, I can't recommend this novel to the readers who do expect some deep and affectionate romance, or are into somewhat of a writings for adults. This isn't it, it's written to be available to even younger audiences, from what I had understood at least. That's probably a subjective matter entirely, so.. Better to take it with a grain of salt. That's it from me, I suppose! Enjoy the Yuritopia!

Kindred Spirits on the Roof is a yuri visual novel developed by Liar-soft and published by MangaGamer. Set within the halls of an all-girls academy, the game presents an unusual blend of romance, supernatural storytelling, and character-driven drama. The story follows Toomi Yuna, a student who unexpectedly gains the ability to see two ghostly girls, Sachi and Megumi, on the school's rooftop. Unable to move on because of their lingering regrets, the spirits convince Yuna to help create a wave of romance throughout the academy. What begins as a quirky supernatural premise gradually unfolds into a heartfelt exploration of love, friendship, and personal growth. One of the game's strongest qualities is its narrative structure. Rather than focusing exclusively on a single romantic pairing, the story follows numerous students whose relationships develop in different ways. Each couple faces unique emotional challenges, from uncertainty and self-doubt to misunderstandings and fear of vulnerability. This approach allows the game to showcase a broad spectrum of romantic experiences while maintaining a consistent tone. The various storylines are interconnected through Yuna's efforts, making the academy feel like a living environment filled with believable personalities rather than a collection of isolated routes. The writing is remarkably sincere and thoughtful. Every major character receives meaningful development, and the game spends considerable time building emotional connections before delivering dramatic payoffs. Conversations often feel natural and authentic, allowing players to become invested in the struggles and triumphs of each relationship. While many visual novels rely heavily on dramatic twists, Kindred Spirits on the Roof succeeds through emotional honesty and carefully crafted character interactions. Its themes of acceptance, understanding, and companionship resonate strongly throughout the entire experience. Yuna serves as an engaging protagonist because of her personal journey. At the beginning, she is largely detached from the people around her and prefers to keep her distance emotionally. As she becomes involved in the lives of her classmates, she gradually opens herself to deeper connections and begins confronting feelings she would rather ignore. Her development provides a strong narrative anchor that keeps the numerous side stories connected. Meanwhile, Sachi and Megumi contribute both humor and emotional depth. Their playful personalities create many entertaining moments, but their lingering regrets also add a bittersweet element that enriches the overall story. The visual presentation complements the narrative exceptionally well. Character artwork is expressive and attractive, helping convey a wide range of emotions during both dramatic and lighthearted scenes. The CG illustrations effectively highlight important moments and give additional impact to key story developments. Backgrounds are colorful and inviting, creating a comfortable school atmosphere that reinforces the game's warm and romantic tone. Although the visuals may not push technical boundaries, their consistent quality helps immerse players in the world. The soundtrack further enhances the experience. Soft piano melodies, cheerful themes, and emotional compositions work together to support the mood of each scene. The music never overwhelms the storytelling but instead acts as a subtle companion that strengthens the emotional impact of important moments. Combined with the visual design, the soundtrack helps establish an atmosphere that is both comforting and memorable. As a visual novel, gameplay remains relatively simple. Players spend most of their time reading dialogue, progressing through events, and making occasional choices. Those looking for complex gameplay systems or extensive branching routes may find the mechanics limited. However, the straightforward design allows the narrative and characters to remain the primary focus. The game understands its strengths and concentrates on delivering a compelling story rather than distracting players with unnecessary features. The pacing can occasionally feel slow due to the large number of characters and relationships being explored. Some story arcs naturally resonate more than others depending on personal preferences. Nevertheless, the game's commitment to fully developing its cast ultimately works in its favor. By the conclusion, most characters feel well-realized and their emotional journeys carry genuine weight. The lengthy runtime provides enough space for relationships to evolve naturally rather than feeling rushed. Perhaps the most impressive achievement of Kindred Spirits on the Roof is how it portrays romance with warmth and sincerity. The relationships are treated with respect and emotional depth, avoiding the feeling of superficial fan service. The game focuses on trust, communication, and emotional connection, creating a collection of romances that feel meaningful and rewarding. This thoughtful approach has helped the title remain highly regarded among fans of visual novels and yuri storytelling. Kindred Spirits on the Roof is a touching and memorable visual novel that succeeds through excellent character writing, strong emotional storytelling, appealing presentation, and a unique supernatural premise. While its leisurely pacing and limited gameplay may not appeal to every player, those who enjoy relationship-focused narratives will find a rewarding experience filled with charm, humor, and heartfelt moments. It stands as one of the more accomplished romance visual novels available on Steam and remains a standout example of character-driven storytelling. Rating: 9/10
