Cursery: The Crooked Man and the Crooked Cat (FROG) Options include three separate sliders for Sounds, Full-screen, Widescreen, Custom Cursor and whether or not there are sparkles on puzzles/fragmented object scenes. Choice of Casual, Normal or Hard Mode. Story: On a journey with your sister, she tells you of an urban legend in the area, about how girls around her age have been disappearing for over a hundred years, never to be seen again. In a flash her teasing becomes horror as your stagecoach is attacked, and a mysterious man steals her away. We have no Journal, but there is only one puzzle hint that you'll need to write down (you'll know it when you see it!) The story has great pacing, with intermittent snippets that we find which are quick and easy-to-read, but expand on the tale beautifully. There is more depth to the story than I expected, and a few twists that I didn't see coming at all. Gameplay: For those not familiar with the term, FROG's are FRagmented Object Games. Instead of your standard to-find lists or silhouettes, etc, you will find pieces of items, which will then become whole and be added to your inventory. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1772732592 Despite the FROG designation, this is really more of a Puzzle-Adventure than anything else. The FRO scenes repeat once, but they are so widely-spaced that I often forgot that they were in the game! The mini-games are very frequent, and there were several repeating themes. Luckily the minis are pretty interesting and fun to play. ;) SKIPPING a puzzle will disable your hint button for a short period. We have an interactive MAP - a magical item that allows us to instantly transport to areas we've been to before. Beware, for the Crooked Man's influence can sometimes overpower the magic, making this power unavailable in some areas. (I absolutely LOVE how they worked the map into the story! Bravo, devs!) HINTS used during the adventure portion of the game will either pinpoint something in the area or give you a directional hint. Sights and Sounds: The graphics work beautifully with the twisted nursery rhyme theme, immersing you in a world both lovely and dangerous. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1772741119 The voice overs are about what you would expect from a casual game, although I'd say that the Crooked Man's acting was above average. I was impressed by how well the music tied everything together, and I especially enjoyed the music box scene. The main game took me about 3.5 hours, but would have taken me longer if I hadn't been too exhausted (from lack of sleep) to complete all of the puzzles in the latter half of the game. ;p CE Content:

Integrated Strategy Guide
Bonus Chapter
20 Cursed (Morphing) Items
25 In-game Achievements
6 Wallpapers
20 Concept Art
17 Cutscenes
5 Music Tracks (can be saved)
Popup Notes Collections (every scrap of story that you discover, sorted by character)
24 Items (gorgeous closeup views of items used in the game - love this!)
Bonus Chapter: The Bonus Chapter takes place 10 years after the events of the main game (even though it says "Prologue"). It's titled Humpty Dumpty, but instead of being a twisted nursery rhyme, the story is more like something by the Brothers Grimm, dark and utterly disturbing. The gameplay itself is a bit more balanced between adventure, FRO's and puzzles. Verdict: This is more of a Puzzle-adventure than a FRagmented Object Game, which is great for me since I'm not a big fan of FROG's in general. The graphics and story coupled with environmental music make this title immersive and compelling. The frequent puzzles somehow didn't interrupt the flow of the storytelling, and I couldn't stop playing until I reached the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the main game, and definitely recommend it.
Short version: 84%
Cursery is the kind of warped fairy tale where the scenery perfectly matches the storytelling style. Thanks to its abundance of puzzles and good pacing, it is also something many fragmented object game players will enjoy.
Long version:
On the surface, ‘Cursery: The Crooked Man and the Crooked Cat’ seems like a standard fairy tale casual adventure game: we play as a usual dashing hero, who witnesses the kidnapping of his sister and sets out to rescue her. It does not take much time for the game to deepen this plot, presenting a dark and relatable motivation for the villain, with a world around him that holds as much tragic past as potential in its complexity (well, as much complexity as the genre allows). Technically, Cursery is a fragmented object one, but this is probably the most downplayed aspect of its gameplay, with only a handful of low-variety scenes. It makes up abundantly in every other area, starting from the straightforward adventure game mechanics, which in turn serve as gateways to the plethora of wonderful conventional puzzles. I have to add though that the bonus chapter is rather different in both story atmosphere and game design, so it may not sit well with everyone.
Cursery is by my favourite team.....Blue Tea games from Singapore who were involved in the Dark Parable games. Their games always have gorgeous sumptuous graphics of high standard and this game is no exception. You are on a journey with your sister when your coach gets attacked and she is kidnapped by the Crooked Man. Hot on her tail, you discover that girls of her age have been disappearing in the area for over 100 years. The story develops at a cracking pace and you discover pieces of the story as you play along. It kept my attention and I didn't get bored. Main game took me about 6 hours with another hour with bonus game. The extra game is more grim with a slight horror tone to it. Definitely not for children! Graphics are stunning....alternating from gorgeous to creepy. The orchestral/choral music fits the scenes beautifully. You see references to the nursery rhymes along the way. Watch out for the deliciously wicked crooked cat. Yes, you see the crooked house and its mouse!! Strangely enough, there weren't that many HO scenes. The game was more puzzle orientated with mini games galore....some were quite difficult. I skipped a couple because I got frustrated and you're penalised with the hint button locking for a few minutes. There were morphing items which I'm never good at finding! No journal but an interactive and fast travel map is available. This locks in certain areas. I really enjoyed this game which was a very clever adaption of twisted nursery rhymes. A high quality HO game with a very different theme....and a complex character as the 'villian'. Highly recommend. 8.5/10
This game is a real gem to play. It's very well-crafted and you can see the amount of time and effort the developers have put into the creation of this wonderful game. Pros: + Stunning and highly intricate artworks. The art is simply breathtaking. + Beautifully composed soundtrack. Delicious ear candy, especially to lovers of classical music. + Great voice acting. + The game is engaging. Not boring to play at all. Neutral: Storyline. The storyline is a little bit cliched but it still has its own unique charm. The story also has a nice progression which doesn't make the game feel stale nor does it have parts that make you feel like they're unnecessary. Unfortunately, there are a few loopholes in the plot. It's not bad but I feel like they could've had been a little bit more in-depth when it comes to the story.
The ending is a total letdown. It's still not bad but it's a disappointment with the way the game ended. It feels like a cliffhanger.
Cons: - Only a limited number of hidden object scenes. Wish they added more of those. In conclusion, I highly recommend this game. Lovers of the hidden object game genre will absolutely love this game. If you are not fond of the said genre, I still recommend this game to you. You will not be disappointed. This game is well-worth every penny. Please give this game a try, guys!
This game has aged really well. A truly excellent game.
I like HOG for how relaxing they are. Take a cup of tea, get a 2 to 3 hours story with relaxing puzzles you already solved a thousand times in another game and move on. This one is no exception, its only issue being the low quality of the game. I enjoyed it nonetheless and liked the Hidden Objects scenes. I should really get that bingo card back in track
So… this is an interesting game. I believe it to be made by the same people that made several of the Dark Parable games. I don’t think they are connected in an “in-game” universe, but there seems to be a similar premise: dark versions of children’s tales (though if you read some of the originals for the Grimm tales… maybe not as far removed). In this game, your sister Renee is kidnapped by the Crooked Man, who seeks the reincarnation of his fiancée. He is helped in this task by a trio of items given to him by Mother Goose. This is not the warm, fuzzy Mother Goose of your childhood, though. This Mother Goose is more like a witch whose help only brings great suffering. Anyway, your task is to rescue your sister before she becomes the next victim. Or perhaps the final victim… The plot is interesting, the HO scenes fun, and the minigames challenging. Very good game of the genre. Well worth the price.
An older HOP but still one of my favorites. The story is so good and the opening lullaby is sad and haunting. The bonus game is super f*cked up and I love seeing darker stuff in HOPs. Cursery never did as well as it's sister series Dark Parables so I get why they didn't make more but it is still sad that this is the only installment.
This game was gorgeous and intriguing from start to finish. Game play was smooth and it isn't one of those where you have to wonder what is supposed to be done next due to ambiguity.
Beautiful game and an interesting story! Aesthetics are 10/10
