About
Short on time? Cult Vacui is the perfect moody afternoon game - most players finish in around 2-3 hours.
Cult Vacui is a point & click with survival horror elements,
set in the late 19th century on the remote island of Barra in Scotland.
We play an unsuspecting janitor who has been given a job opportunity to maintain the Gladstone family's summer estate.
What we discover is that the day before we arrived, a gruesome blood ritual was performed on the island's population at the hands of a creepy cult.
Our arrival has ruined the ritual, which can only be considered concluded if every person in the perimeter of the island is eliminated.
Apparently we are their last obstacle... at least that is what we believe.
We have a few hours to prepare for the last act of their insane ritual; we must prepare a strategy to defend ourselves and (hopefully) survive.
In Cult Vacui, every choice counts, every action we take takes time that will fall short of the final act countdown, find the right strategy to maximize your efforts (even across multiple game sessions).
Logical but challenging puzzles, apply the right solving strategy without getting frustrated
your every action consumes time, in a countdown to the final act
creepy horror atmosphere
multiple endings based on your game choices
Pixel art graphics handmade and thought by a real human being
Engaging and original soundtrack composed by Ascari, a musician also credited in film
Average playtime 2 hours
I hope this is the beginning of a new sub-genre: the 4 Days to Survive-like, a point and click adventure where taking certain actions (like traveling between distant locations, time consuming physical work or waiting for something to finish) costs time from an alloted hard limit. Then after the limit is exhausted the game moves to a resolution phase where the resuit depends on your prior preparation. Cult Vacui has 3 such scenarios which while all are fun only the 2nd one is meaty/lengthy enough for my taste. The 1st scenario is simpler as a introduction so it's forgivable, but the final third one is even shorter than the introdutory scenario with like only 4 steps required to finish it. Also it seems the dev wants You to fail the 3rd scenario on your 1st try because there is not enough time to learn what needs to be done and then get the required items from another location. You need to get the items first which requires foreknowledge of the solution. All in all the game took me 2h to complete all achievements (which required replaying from the start to get an alternate end which depends on the outcome of scenario 1) so the overall playtime is pretty low, especially for point and click veterans who will quickly solve the puzzles. But what is there is still high-quality so I recommend to play the game if the low running time is not a deal breaker.
Good game. Kind of a trial-and-error at the beginning trying to reduce your time on objectives so that you have enough time at the end to prepare for the final event. It definitely satisfied my love for puzzles. I did get a bug where all the notes were the same, it was all the same note that you get at the beginning. Played great on Steam Deck. You could beat it in about 90-120 minutes.
This is a great start for a new developer, using a style of system that has barely ever been used, outside of the Don't escape series by Scriptwelder. it has a lot of frustration points though, primarily with a few bugs I had, and a little bit of logic that was more frustrating than fun. In the first chapter ||I assumed that the ritual notes ended on the fourth page, as they were ripped apart at that piece and assumed the rest would be gone, but you had to read another page after to be able to talk to the drunk, and there was no way to know that was what was stopping it.|| this is mostly on me, but on chapter 2 I had a more egregious bug ||where I put in the stones correctly for the lock puzzle, but the door refused to unlock, potentially as I misplaced the rocks first time, which stopped me from being able to clear the chapter in general.|| I think the most annoying part though is that this game is designed to be replayed multiple times, but there is very limited tools for skipping through previously seen dialogue. a fast forward through stuff that is the same would be appreciated, and the try again after failing an event led to a black screen that didn't change. In general, these were very rough, and I would say if people are interested they should wait for these errors to be fixed, but I think for the price its very much worth the time. I will update the review if the bugs are fixed, but yeah.
This is an engaging puzzle game. Some people complain about the timer, but I think it is well implemented as it is more of a resource, you actually have time to decide your actions. A few minor bugs with text, nothing too bad. I wish it was a bit longer, but overall a good experience.
A short horror game in the vane of Don't Escape series. Maybe a 5 złoty too much for its length but otherwise i can't complain. All puzzles make sense, there's a few different endings, there's no bugs or other unpleasantness. So, good game. 8/10 - could be a tiny bit cheaper in my region, could be longer or more ambitious... but it's good c:
Me encantó. Inspirador. Me motiva a seguir trabajando en mi propio videojuego :)
Very fun game! The art is awesome and the music is good. The story is easy to follow too and the puzzles were nice. The game has multiple endings based on your choices so that was a great touch! Regarding the time mechanism, I am a very slow player so I was initially worried about it. But the time is in-game not an actual time. The clock does not tick. Instead, your choices cost time. For example in the first level, you had 25 minutes or so to solve the problem. Leaving the room costs 1 minute, moving something costs 3 minutes and so on. So I ended up really liking the time management mechanism!
