Overall this is a challenging strategy game and it takes a long learning curve for the newbies to decipher the AI's general tactics and what to counter with. Speaking from a person with interest in the topics of the game but lacks experience with similar genres, I think 15+ hours of gameplay could bring you somewhere, and that is given you start the game with the 1914 scenario and either 1)you are playing as the Entente forces 2)you are playing on the easiest difficulty. Instead of focusing on the casualties ratio on a certain front, one should pay more attention to the management of the fiscal-military balance, with a good understanding of each country's situation. Germany? Focus on trench warfare, attack with ferocity against weaker Entente fronts, and don't waste your high sea fleet. Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire? Tell your men to hold the line and be sure to produce enough troops to maintain the status quo. This is where your WWI History 101 kicks in. What's interesting about this game is that the actual gameplay ironically tells you that the quick invasion of Belgium and northern France in 1914 and the stunning victories at Tannenberg and Masurian Lakes are not easily replicable. The same element of luck in real history is not to be found in the turns of this game as the AI enemy has unlimited access to railway points (this is blatant cheating but I think it's OK) and is scripted to find the best positioning choice for troops. Hence at most times, your victory depends on rigid calculation and planning and a deep understanding of the game's mechanics. Joke's on you, the more I play this game, the more I appreciate how well the Central Powers performed historically, managing to avoid a collapse in a few months. I’d recommend this game to players with a strong interest in the period, rather than those looking for a casual experience.
At first, I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought the game and started playing, but I gotta admit I absolutley love it and it got me hooked from the first campaign. Game makes you think and rethink all your tactics and movements beforehand, and if you make a mistake or miscalculate something, you will pay in the long run. It's very addictive, at least the first campaign, we'll see after a while but right now I'm hooked. It will take you some time to understand everyhing properly though, cause as the game points out, it's easy to learn but hard to master. Anyway, if you're a fan of war games and tactics and planning, this is your game.
Solid WW1 grand strategy game. Nothing too complex to understand. AI is decent.
the game is easy but challenging. The AI is very reactive to your moves making no to play throughs the same
I enjoy Commander the Great War. Its a hex game with a nice WW1 game. Lots of replay. The AI holds its own for the first couple years, had a multiplayer function but the game is dated now. I will say the limitations of the game are the diplomacy function is non existent. The AI military will fall apart when italy joins the war. The AI will flood italy with troops and abandon Paris which makes a easy Central power victory. Ai is also unable to sustain long term naval warfare like repairing ships. All in all, still enjoy this WW1 game.
Too overwhelming, it makes you control every single nation in the Entente or Central Powers instead of just choosing one. This would be neat as some optional game mode, but it's the only game mode :/
