What can I say ? Probably the most advanced strategy game ever. The attention to details is stunning. Every single vehicle and aircraft is modelled and rated including all division leaders and upwards. The game is easy to play but hard to master. Supply is working properly, raillines are your main routes. Panzers are your friends on open grounds. The enemy A.I is excellent and very hard to lure. The Air war is abstract and somewhat hard to understand. The manual are huge and almost on 300 pages. I have not read more than the tutorial and parts of the manual then I started playing for 200 hours and don´t see the need to go back because many rules are details that don´t affect the whole very much in either case. Highly recommended game. Most similar game would be the Decisive campaigns series. Both are excellent choices.
What a shame this review is thumbs down because I can see the developer has put a lot of work into it. Unfortunately, it just isn’t what I anticipated. I’ll start with what I liked. I think, while the game is complex, as someone who plays a lot of strategy games, the basics of the game were fairly easy to pick up, which is good. That said, there wasn’t a tutorial so if this is your first strategy game I’d stay clear. The map was pleasant enough to look at, although there are some design choices I disagree with. For the cons, there’s a few. First up, the price. I understand that this sort of game has a fairly niche playerbase and they need to make a profit but their price is just excessive for what the game is. I bought it on sale but it still wasn’t cheap. The game doesn’t allow full screen mode, which really sucks. I don’t see why the devs couldn’t do this when there’s software on steam that makes the game go borderless, which I bought as it wasn’t too expensive. The games replayability is questionable; a lot of the scenarios, while no doubt they are long, don’t really seem to give any reason to play them again; play it once and that’s it. While the game is right for some, I can’t recommend it to most people. If you’re keen, I’d wait for a sale and try it to see if it suits you.
This is more a neutral review: I played a lot of Gary Grigsby's War Between The States back then and that game still holds up today but i can't understand the "HYPE" of WitE. Yes you have a super detailed front and information of your units but what does it count if nearly every unit has the "same" equipment (example: the Inf. Divs of the Heeresgruppe Mitte or the LW Feld Divs of the Heeresgruppe Nord) and you can´t for example order some tactic attacks or define the unit formation during an attack or defens. You take your unitstack and throw it into the enemy unitstack...then you get your result, done. The Decisive Campaigns Series, Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game and Hearts of Iron III give you more leeway, depth and a wider variation of decisions...and if you are a little more masochistic use the Black ICE mod for HoI3. So for me WitE is an okay game if you have someone for PBEM and if you can get it for under 15 bugs.
unbelievably detailed and complex game. Great historical accuracy and far from easy to win but nevertheless keep playing it. God knows how Germans got as far as they did in real life. Having said that of course they did loose badly.
How can I recommend it when I only played one game? It only took 270 hrs to finish it, though. On my first (and only) game I won by Decisive Victory, but maaan... I had some close calls. Like when after taking Moscow and the dreaded mud came, I was almost surrounded in it and to the East of it. It took 4-5 months to fight off the near encirclement (that came from the North). In any case, I won in Aug 1942 after some extremely aggressive moves on my part when I had my Panzers surrounded for a time, and I lost a whole Corps in the Caucasus... in the end my gamble and aggressive moves prevailed and I managed to cross the Ural River. Game over Stalin! I'd play again, but I purchased GG's War in the East 2, so I'm headed that way. See you in 300 hours... (after a few weeks off to shake off the PTSD I got on the Eastern Front).
This is possibly the best detailed wargame I've ever played (and I've been playing computer wargames since the 1980s). From issues of supply to airpower to actual encirclements, Gary Grigsby has pulled off something special here. It's a wargame that doesn't feel like a puzzle that, once you crack it, you've done it. This is a proper wargame. If you don't master supply, you will fail. If you don't master the art of pulling off encirclements, you fill fail. It's brilliant and wholeheartedly recommended.
I was watching an online tutorial on how to understand and play War in the East and I have to say that I agree with the online assessment that the complexity of this game is less inhibiting than it appears. The AI functions are very good in regard to the air campaign for example, while the default settings for the game settings/user preference are excellent. One surprise for me was the number of scenarios- there are a lot and they keep the game interesting.
I find this game enjoyable overall. The winter months as german can be a bit of a chore, but it's a great game.
【Gary Grigsby
WitE(War in the East)こそがラスボス的存在です。
対戦相手がいればPBEM(Play By E-Mail)にも対応しています。
i LOVE THE DETAIL IN THIS GAME. AS WITH ANY HISTORICAL LOOKBACK, I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW THE GERMANS THOUGHT THEY COULD WIN, BUT ITS FUN TRYING.
