They say that the strongest steel is forged in the flames of a dumpster fire. The engine? Wack. The graphics? Wack. The UI? Wack. The price? Wack. Your little troopers ability to hit something? Wack. And yet, nothing else does what Combat Mission does. Real Time or Turn based platoon/Battalion combat covering a variety of conflicts. I'd recommend grabbing during a sale. Worth every penny. Amazing series. If you dream of playing with toy soldiers using real tactics, get this beautiful disaster of a game, and prepare for Usually Hapless tutorials.
This game doesn't support modern monitor resolutions out of the box; you have to edit configuration files in order to get it to use your monitor's resolution. Once you do, though, you won't be able to read any of the text because the UI doesn't scale. At all. It also lags significantly, even on a modern gaming machine. It's a pity because this seems like it would be such a fun game, but sadly the graphics issues make it essentially unplayable.
This thumbs down is because this was made in 2023, not 1993... Maybe if it was made in 2003 I could see people getting into it but, It's just so bad. like you have to be someone who either loves the Combat Mission series of games for the nostalgia factor or someone who has all day to fiddle with a clunky UI that's reminiscent of the old windows 95 days. No 4k, not even 1080p.... Living your life it too important to the point that I would have a hard time playing this game even if someone paid me daily to do it. In essence, if this game was my job I'd quit, and not because of a bad boss, no, he's alright and he's just trying to get by like the rest of us, no, I'd quit because I have self respect and I know I deserve better! The latest "Play by email features"... what is this, do you get a free pen pall with your purchase?
i luv this game

It's excellent. Ok so it runs badly, the UI is garbage, graphics are mil-sim and not pretty. However if you have a particular kind of hunger for realism and the application of real-world tactics then this game will blow others out of the water. An example I regularly cite is my (human) opponent firing 105mm shells into my midfield area and a shell's splinter clipped a squad leader 100m and that guy was the furthest guy away in that field where I had like 20 men. Almost always shells will damage as you'd expect but the engine is strong enough mechanically that odd ricochets can have real effects. This includes tank shells bouncing off armour plates and clipping poor bloody infantry. Much like other play by email games, if you can get into a multiplayer game and carry it through to the end, you'll remember it forever. One time I used a 76mm sherman and knocked out the gun of a tiger and I didn't know the gun was out so my opponent effectively had this asset I feared in this nice fog of war effect. How is this different to other Combat Mission games? This one is set in hedgerow country so it's very much hopping to each one in turn and clearing them systematically with the odd bit of urban usually rural-level urban combat. Close unit tactics with infantry including blowing up holes in hedgerows dominate. So the combat is very tight and close ranged OR based on creating a base of fire from a hedgerow line of good cover before charging some guys across a nightmare empty plain.
Game itself is fine. DLC pricing is crazy and thats the reason for the negative review.
