the concept of combat mission games is so good, but the execution is so poor and its a shame there's no proper competitor for modern tactical wargames. the developers are exceedingly incompetent and rarely (if ever) update their games to address a long list of bugs and longstanding issues, this game has literally never received any updates since its release on steam, and is still filled with bugs since before its steam launch (Like the Dutch Gill ATGM rarely ever hits anything and always overshoots targets) however, little did I know, them never releasing an update was a blessing! as of February 3rd, this game is fundamentally broken! the developers seemingly emerged out of their coma and released a new battlepack DLC for this game, that broke the units in every previously released DLC, preventing them from spawning in any scenario. Bravo Battlefront developers! a critical gamebreaking bug that genuinely renders all of the games $100+ of DLC completely unplayable!!! very cool and I appreciate the zero communication about this issue and the fact its been 2 weeks and still no fix, not even a rollback update or anything. When will it be fixed? who knows? will it ever be fixed? I dunno! If the devs ever communicated anywhere other than the deepest depths of their ancient forums that would be incredible! Could you really not even bother to playtest the game ONE WHOLE TIME to discover the game genuinely doesn't work at all?? Abhorrent quality assurance, terrible incompetent developers, a poorly made game of so much missed potential, and 20+ years of never learning from their mistakes and never delivering a quality product. the combat mission series should be avoided at all costs. anyway I wouldn't even recommend this game to begin with for its significant flaws, however I can't state enough that the game currently LITERALLY DOES NOT WORK!
This game is actually fun, but the technical issues make it incredibly hard to enjoy. For a game that costs $60, it is asking way too much for something running on an infrastructure that is more than two decades old. The engine is just completely unoptimized, old, and clunky. The camera system is absolutely ♥♥♥♥, and trying to move around feels incredibly weird. It is not natural at all- it feels like you are trying to control some remote Mars rover where every single turn and movement is stiff and awkward. Instead of focusing on the game, you spend half your time fighting the controls just to navigate the map. Even simple actions like panning the camera cause the framerate to tank, and players literally have to disable basic settings like shadows via hotkeys just to get a stable framerate. Graphically, it is just as bad. The textures look terrible, and literally everything visual is dated and poorly made. The terrain rendering is incredibly basic, vegetation constantly morphs or disappears when you zoom out, and unit animations look comically bad. Despite looking like an early 2000s title, the performance is abysmal. If you open a larger scenario or campaign map, the game instantly chugs and struggles to utilize modern PC hardware efficiently, proving how deep the optimisation issues run in the legacy code. It is frustrating because the tactical depth and the game itself are good, but the developers are being extremely lazy. There is no reason to leave a game on a recalcitrant, twenty-year-old framework, put out an unoptimized and ♥♥♥♥ product, and still charge full retail price for it.
Mine mechanics in this game are seriously broken and frustrating. Trying to mark them for 15 minutes since minefield is leading trough the only way to engage the enemy. I know that is realistic. What is not realistic is that you cant really do anything about it than let your troops drive over it and take unnecessary casualties. You cant tell me that this is american docrin on how to handle a mine threat. If troops would at least go where i tell them it wouldnt be that bad but like this its just very annoying and unbearable.
Game is completely broken and unplayable. Will not load your troops and is a such a mess.
Graphically dated, but that does not stop it from being one of the best combat simulators you can find.
this is one of those games i want to like, and it is a great concept, but so horribly executed. First campaign mission is a great example, they tell you there are mines in a bottleneck that you have to cross, but no readily available way to mark and/or destroy them (even though you have 3 engineer squads). Same mission I had a stryker/APC get "stuck" in the starting zone. it is immobilized and there is no way to tow it out, that unit is gone for the whole campaign. like what person would ever think that makes any sense? That plus the AI just seeming to do its own thing when you give it an order makes this game a hard pass until they make some serious changes, and given the updates that is not going to happen because the game is basically finished.
Game has been patched up and functional. 100% Recomendation for people that want real operational control and consequence.
I have a love-hate relationship with this series, on one hand it offers a wargaming experience that isn't like any other, very unique mechanics and simulation of real life factors e.g morale isn't simply a bar but modifiers that affect how the troops act, whether they route by themselves, surrender or are easier to supress etc. On the other hand, the developers are lazy and simply don't care because they know that they got the monopoly on this specific type of tactics game, all combat mission games run like crap, are very clunky and unintuitive, the game recently got a battlepack DLC released which somehow caused the soldier's helmets to disappear, in an effort to fix this THE DEVS BROKE THE GAME FOR NEARLY 2 WEEKS; with the only temporary fix at the time being to buy the DLC that broke everything. I do not recommend this to anyone out of principle alone, do not give these people your money, the community needs to stop being complicit with the developer's current practice. If you REALLY want to play these games, get a steam key off or pirate it.
Since last patch game is broken, units don't spawn. Fix this. Edit: They fixed the game but it took an absurd amount of time.
Controls and Graphics are extremely dated and clunky but still peak.
