There is nothing like having the initiative, taking a bridge objective, covering a crossroad with your MG teams, and advancing on a retreating enemy...only to run into a Panzer. An entire Assault team went down instantly, which is painful for how long it took to advance. Their only hope was a Bazooka getting a lucky shot. If they don't, your entire advance was for nothing. I found myself sweating as they waited in position, while I pulled back my Little Groups of Paratroopers, hoping to draw the tank in the open. The tank pushed the advantage, and my bazooka team punished him. The battle ended and I felt relieved. I didn't capture all the objectives I intended to, but my guys survived holding the bridge objective...that was more than enough. Not many games these days make you care about pixel soldiers. I'm happy these can be played on modern hardware. Not to mention, they are pretty inexpensive.
This brings back my best memories from childhood. This was my first every computer game, and it cost a pretty penny back then. Definitely worth the 5 bucks they are charging on here. This version on Steam has significant problems with crashing unfortunately. So far I have had 3 CTD's in just half an hour on different battles. I hope this is optimized soon, but if not, just buy the physical CD copy as this game is very much worth it.
This is exactly Close Combat 5, no modification or improvement. It's great to have the CC games on Steam, and it's as good as I remember. Tremendous feeling of actually leading guys into battle! Edit: I should also mention that this game is running great on Win10, which has been a problem with some versions in the past. No need for a VM or even compatibility settings!
Edit : The developers fixed the constant crash issues. I am now giving a thumbs up. Previous review was a thumb down. This is the best Close Combat title amongst all of them, imo. Unfortunately it keeps crashing during battle so I cant personally recommend it.
Old but gold
Loved this game back in the day. A bridge too far. Main problem with this one is that it is too easy. Weird way of selecting difficulty level and even once you figure that out, still not hard enough. Not fun if you win all the time.
Es ist ja in Ordnung alte Spiele wieder zu bringen, aber sie sollten nicht auf modernen Systemen ständig abstürzen. Vor allem wenn man angibt, dass sie darauf laufen.
After the recent update the game works flawlessly! Thanks!! ---- Original Review: I've been waiting eagerly for this Steam release. In my opinion, CC5 is the best of the Close Combat series games and CC is the best of the old school squad leader style games. I really love this game from previous play but unfortunately this Steam release crashes to disk whenever I extend the fire line from a mortar or gun to the edge of the window. Since this is a real-time game without the ability to save the game state, that makes this release basically unplayable until it is fixed. That makes me sad but hopeful someone will take the time to put out a stable release.
This by far my favorite Atomic Games version of Close combat. I've played just about every version since the first one came out in the middle 90s (and I still play them). I like the interface, the terrain, the look of the units, everything. I'd prefer it if the tank drivers didn't neutral steer at every opportunity, but it appears to me that there isn't a single developer that does not take the Infantry insult DATS (Dumb ass Tankers) as gospel.
Reviewing games I played a long time ago: I remember I had a free copy from a magazine and played this A LOT. Not as much as 4, which is my favourite, but close. I replayed one map for an hour just now and it was a pleasure, as good as I remember. Plays really well on the Deck (and any Linux of course), but be sure to: Go to your install folder, and open the CC5.ini file. Change this: PlayVideos=1 to PlayVideos=0 Use launch option in game properties: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw.dll=n,b" %command%
