This is a Commandos game in name only. Whilst I appreciate the brand being rejuvenated after all these years, it's clear the developers took their inspiration from Mimimi Games titles rather than the very series this prequel-type story was built on. Firstly, the visuals are somewhat okay, but pale severely in comparison to the utterly staggering pre-rendered backdrops we saw in Commandos 2. There is just a distinct lack of detail and feel in this game when compared to one that's 25 years old. Levels lack depth and have a distinct lane or corridor feel. Enemy AI is also pretty poor and some of their animations look really sloppy. Sometimes they skid along the ground when distracted from their default routine and other times they collide with the terrain. Enemies are also seemingly plastered around the map in quantity without much thought. The most unforgiving aspect of Origins is the lack of survival and tactical depth. You cannot scavenge from fallen enemies or use their uniforms. You can't even throw bodies through windows. All you can do is hide enemies in the dozens of conveniently placed bushes dotted all over maps. A huge step backwards. The levels themselves are really bland and are just bloated with enemies and basic objectives. The narrative behind just doesn't captivate and most of the time you just have to infiltrate, and do one thing in a compound. The music and general atmosphere is also extremely flat and levels just become tedious in time. The UI is also incredibly plain and lacks the distinct art style seen in previous games. Not sure if its laziness or a lack of imagination but having an entirely white interface when there are snow levels is just another poor oversight and interpretation of what players require. Overall, Origins was a welcome return to the series but it misses the mark on every key element, With staple features omitted and a real lack of tactical depth on offer, this feels like a Mimimi knock-off. If there's a Commandos 4, it has to be built on the Commandos formula and not just the name.
This is good but not as good as the previous Commandos games done by Eidos Interactive.
Weltkrieg.
After all the patches the game is fun and worth the time.
Masterpiece. Old school atmosphere from C1 BEL & BCD. Clean interface and game mechanics. Without unnecessary details.
I've been playing games for over 20 years and this is the first time I've ever posted a review! I could love this game however I can't recommend that anyone buys it as it's so unstable. I'm only just beginning level 3 and so far the game has crashed 50+ times (I've never had another game crash on me, ever). I decided to make one final attempt today but each one of my last three saves just results in a crash back to the desktop. I contacted Kalypso some time ago and sent them the required info but so far no one has got back to me. Unbelievably frustrating!
I just finished the game and really enjoyed it. The mission layout is quite complex and not too easy, but always manageable. If you liked Commandos 1 & 2, you'll have a good time over all. BUT: 1. Unfortunately, there's a big, hairy "but" coming round the corner: I have a quite good computer, so there should be no hardware issues, but at times, I went into the single digit FPS range. I was close to quitting the game for good, but then reduced the resolution and played with the video settings, which made it a lot less pretty, but playable. If playing a super shiny game with top resolution on 60 FPS is non negotiable to you, this game is not for you. If you can live with a little grain and maybe not the most realistic water animations, you should be fine. 2. The second "but" is not quite as hairy as the first one, but it made parts of the game unnecessary confusing, especially the last mission. If you're in a building or structure with doors and/or multiple levels, it's a bit tedious to see where you're going and where the enemies are. You can only see in another room, if your chosen Commando is inside or directly out the door. If you select another Commando, who's elsewhere, you can't see into the room anymore, so there's no way to go inside but to go to the door first and then through. That's fine in every mission but the last, but you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there. Also, the silouettes of enemies can be seen through floors, so there's no real way of knowing if you run into an enemy group or if you can just walk over their heads one or two floors above. This is not made well and gets worse in combination with the first problem of not seeing inside buildings. You'll be switching Commandos a lot just to have a look and try to navigate the map. All in all I liked it very much, and hey, you can kill A LOT of Nazis, and isn't that what Commandos is all about?
Nutí to přemýšlet nad taktikou a neplencat zdroje. Jis, sé" to samozřejmě nemá. V rámci DLC No Man Left Behind zase nejde z tutoriálu pochopit, jak máte vlastně (jednoduše) likvidovat radisty atd.
Is that you, officer? The demo to this game is a smaller level that doesn't appear in the real version of the game. I think that's a nice touch. Perhaps not that much of a challenge if you complete the whole game before you discover it but shows they really wanted to put some effort into the overall experince. If you try the demo first you don't need to replay anything later on. The actual game looks pretty much like the classic version but offcourse with better graphics graphics. If you remember how to play the old games. This is basically the same with some new features. Some updates are pretty cool. Others wasn't really that necessary. From my experience with this subgenre the creators are good at doing what was done before but don't really know how to take the next step forward. This game does a decent attempt at it. Far better than Commandos III, Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge or Helldorado but perhaps not what the fans really are longing for. Alarm! My biggest complaint about this game is mostly about the main game. Not so much the later DLC-missions where the creators actually improved this with rather good results. The complaint? Most levels in this game are quite big and too often it's rather easy to see how to attack an enemy. This by itself isn't a bad thing but more enemies doesn't always make the challenge more intriguing. It sometimes feel more like I was doing more brainless killing than actually playing an challenging game. Sometimes the game is genuinly intriguing but too often you can easily get your enemies without much effort. I don't think that's why people come to this subgenre. Those who do enjoy this want the challenge, or am I wrong? I played on the highest diffculty during the whole game and both DLC's. There was challenges, for sure, but perhaps too few of them. I rather have forty well placed enemies than one hundred fifty enemies that's placed in all kinds of ways. If this is the first time playing this style of game you might feel very differently but I think several of the other more current games was better in this aspect. Shadow Tactics or Desperados III for example. Finally, some action. This game looks like the classic games but especially the main game have a weak storyline. It might not matter much to players in this type of game but for me it gets a bit more interesting than just random dates and random places. Another thing is the lack of attitude and comedy in the dialogue as well as weak grapical scenes between the levels. It just feels a bit rushed or afraid to have a personality. Both DLC's did improve to some extent on all of this so the creators are aware I believe. If they continue doing yet another game of this style, I think it will be an even better one. Why spend energy on doing better DLC's otherwise? Easier to just do the exact same thing over and over to earn easy money! I've got friends on the other side. Negative review so far? Maybe but the game has much going for it. It certainly have small touches all over that improve on the old games. I don't want to spoil anything but play enough of it and you'll see positive details. Perhaps the best part is the use of different kind of enviroments. There are all kinds. Nighttime, on boats, on islands, with bridges, in the dessert, in the jungle and what have you. It's not just the same thing over and over. Which is a big plus. The levels take enough time that you want something a bit different whenever you finish one. They made a good job of just that. Consider it done, boss. I would give this game a grade of 7,5 / 10. Some levels and most of the DLC's deserve a better grade but too much of the main game isn't on par with the best of it. I wouldn't say this is one of the key games in the subgenre but it's a pretty decent one. It certainly worth a try and while the DLC's are rather short. They if anything are worth your time. One more thing: If they release more DLC's? I'll buy it. If they make another similar game? I'll probably buy that too.
