Pixel Samurai is a small, short and neat game that has some Sekiro vibes. The game features 5 fights. In these fights you have 3 options. To attack, parry (deflect/shield) and dash. That's it. Like mentioned before, the game is short, which constitutes the low $3 pricepoint, which i think is fair. The main jist of the game is learning your enemies' attacks and timing your parry correctly. The game is very difficult, which is why the addition of the easy mode was the greatest decision the dev could have made, it infinitely enhanced my experience since after my first 10 minutes (without easy mode) I'd hit the first 'boss' like 3 times. It could use more bosses/fights, or maybe just 1 more 'end boss', but i think the game was made to be short. One small note: The cutscene isn't necesarry after each respawn imo, i just wanted to try again. Overall, it's a nice experience for an evening, pick it up if you fancy a challenge
Follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.
Very difficult short game that reminds me of Furi
Overrall I liked the game, it is always good to see a sekiro-inspired combat. The game is simple and short but it is worth the 1.50€ I paid. You can just attack, parry and dodge. You can parry most of enemy's attacks except for some "special" attacks counterable with a player's attack. After you press Start, you can hit the first statue to change the behaviour of the parry, between continuous and temporary, with the continuous that auto-ends when parrying an attack. So even if you use the "easy parry" (continuous) you have to press the parry command for every enemy's attack. Also, parry is useful only to avoid simple attack, not to destabilise the enemy lke in sekiro. So you can't play defensive. I have to say that, in my opinion, the game is too much punishing. The weapon has a too short range compared to every weapon of the enemies. So almost every time you have to go foward to be able to hit the enemy. Moreover, after a parry, you can't attack for a fraction of a second, so it is almost impossible to do a fast parry+attack. It feel unresponsive, it is like the game ignores the gamepad command. Some enemies attacks are unreadable (this is mostly because of the pixel art style), like the jump+spinning one of the 4 enemy: it hits two times, you can parry the first hit but (apparently) not the second; maybe there is a correct window to parry the second attack but I couldn't say because the animation doesn't show it. Again, with the 4 enemy there are two almost identical attack with no (apparent) way to distinguish them. One start with 2 simple attack and the other with 3. Both ends with the same "special" attack counterable with a player's attack. The animation does not show a way to foresee if it will have 2 or 3 simple attack before the final "special" attack, it seems random. So you have no way to tell if your third move should be a parry or an attack to avoid the enemy's third move. And the kanji that appears with the "special" attack shows off at the very last moment, so you can't act just using reflexes, it's way too fast. In the end I would have appreciated an option to change the keys in the start menu. Overrall the game is fun and it's a good pastime for a couple of hours, even at full price.
hard as ♥♥♥♥, you never stun the enemy, and they ALWAYS cancel out your attack. its insufferable trying to get even the first opponent down to 3/4 of health
👍
