Great game, very nice art style. Really cool how they merged a coin pusher with the rouge-like genre. Very unique game and worth a purchase!
The game physics are just not where they need to be for a coin pusher, even after the rework. Everything gently tumbles and floats, and you see a lot of cogs landing on their edge and staying there - even if they're on a moving platform. It feels like we're playing with giant blocks of styrofoam, not small metal cogs. It almost feels like everything except the pusher itself needs to be sped up 3-4x. There are four or five cog types available. Bombs don't really create an explosion (like we see in the game trailer), but seem to be more of a vigorous table bump. There are no big, splashy, table-clearing attacks, and no special table-seeding cogs to set yourself up for later. There are some significant bugs as well: as of this writing, the shop feature seems to be broken for multiple players. Clicking "next" on the Tutorial screen fires a cog. I'm hopeful that a physics re-rework down the line might give this title the spark of life it needs. But as it stands, this just doesn't hit the mark for me.
What a fun and charming game! There's nothing more satisfying than watching a well placed bomb throw knocking off half your board of cogs and decimating your enemies. I really loved how well the soundtrack and art style worked together as I progressed through each level. Great and original concept for a roguelike.
Honestly this game is a masterpiece. From the catchy soundtrack to the fun array of shop items and special cogs, Clockwork Owl is a super addicting and artistic dimension that you'll happily get immersed in for hours. You can tell that the developer put a lot of love and care into the details of the mechanics, theme, sounds, and storyline. I love how uniquely owl-y the soundtrack is and I love the main quest story of the owl. The satisfying feeling and sounds of bombing a bunch of cogs off and defeating enemies never gets old. Among the many fun elements of the game, there are special damage cogs that spice up each round and reset cogs that randomly generate and make every round unique. I love the way this game is meticulously planned to make it difficult but beatable if you keep trying and honing your skills. It's a meticulous and wonderful game of patience, accuracy, and timing. The artistic style gets even more amazing when you enter the second dimension, which is a Japanese themed world. I'm currently still trying to beat the second world and I'm curious to see who has been able to beat it! Clockwork owl is a creative mesh of nostalgia, fantasy, and roguelike games.
FRIEND OF THE DEV, so take with grain of salt.. But this game is fun, I grew up always gravitating to coin pushers in arcades. It was a game with a fun challenging game loop that I was decent at and it really earned the tickets or tokens. This game does give you that same feeling of finessing coins of the ledge. But coupled with Roguelike mechanics I can and will play for hours. The music is amazing, the jazzy lofi tracks really set the stage for a casual but fresh journey up these mysterious trees and set the stage for each world of the game. Can't wait for the devs to add more content 🙂
EDIT: A bunch of great changes got made :) Original review below: This game feels unfinished and there are a number of things it still needs: - Coins are too floaty and get stuck on their sides, and in some cases can even fall off the board entirely. - Play area needs to be shifted up a bit so the owl is at the very top; your eyes spend most of the game looking at the coins being pushed, after all. - Music is extremely repetitive and I didn't find it relaxing at all. - There's very little feedback or weight to your actions. Sound design will help here as well, the coins need to clatter and bang, it's a coin pusher, it has to be visceral! The coins need weight to them! - Doesn't seem to be much of a way to build towards a certain thing or synergies with certain items, there are just different coins. Surely there is a ton of design space here that will help marry the Roguelite Broken Build Simulator dopamine rush with the Coins Clattering And Falling dopamine rush. - Rather than having board refresh be a powerup that drops, why not have it be a power you can activate? In the real world you'd just switch tables to something with a bit more coins ready to drop, after all. There is a good game in here trying to get out. I will amend this review in a heartbeat if things change.
I have had a lot of fun playing this game since it was in early access and during the demo period. The premise is simple, it's just like an arcade coin dropper game from my childhood (which I loved). The added random elements of combat spaces, store upgrades, and bonus chests/trap spaces really make the experience fun, strategic, and roguelike. Also the music is phenomenal. I really enjoyed the soundtrack and how it was thematic to the environments. Since this game is relatively early development, I can't wait for more polished mechanics, added balances, and new levels! :)
Clockwork Owl is a delightful coin pusher roguelike, which is a very interesting and refreshing concept. The gameplay is simple, yet strategic and honestly quite addicting. When you land a perfect bomb and launch a bunch of cogs off the tray its a very satisfying feeling. The art style is cool, i think it was interesting that this game combines 3D modeling with a pixel art UI. The music is also very good!
I loved playing this games demo, it hit me hard in the nostalgia after the first playthrough of the demo that I said to myself that i HAD to buy the full version to see what else was added and I was not disappointed. The developer of this game is creative and dynamic in how they bring different elements and different levels to the game. It truly felt like I was pulled back into the arcade again trying to win prizes and figure out how to outsmart the game itself! Definitely will be playing more of it :)
Great game. I really like the Roguelike mechanic and the music is great too. Also i like owls :D
