♥♥♥♥ camera, boss battles and boss battles with this camera. Level transition is a cutscene with a cutscene. Unskippable. Nancy is screaming "Clive!" constanlty in every level. Why? No reason. Game is good, but there is too much to collect, some minor bugs and no story progression. All you do is walk around and collect stuff, not much else. Collectable count bugged at 9278. You need 1980 for a "secret" level without a story and some more stuff to collect. edit save: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1094720/discussions/0/3830914078559177640/#c3826411316948882501 Alternative is to visit China themed level and break a vase on top of first wall to get 4 watches.
This is a straight up bad game. Where do I even begin? Yes, it's as janky as you suspect it is. The high jump + double jump + helicopter spin combo breaks the levels. The character designs are all babyish, ugly, generic, and lack any sort of charm or visual art style. It's as bland as you can possibly get. The levels are all the same, open areas with shapes scattered around, that's the "level design". In these boring open areas are pocket watches (collectibles) randomly scattered around and the goal of the game is to collect them to unlock the next area. That's it. Collecting things isn't fun. Nothing is even visually appealing to look at, like a musical note from Banjo or a gem from Spyro or a Orb from Jak is, and you get zero sense of satisfaction from collecting anything here. Horrendous character animations literally effect your platforming because you don't even know what move your character is performing. Ground slams look embarrassing. Like development got cut before he could finish animating it. Climbing is basically broken, seriously the Rabbit starts to spasm out when he climbs and half the time won't latch onto the pole or whatever. There is no hook to this game. In Banjo you progress thru Gruntys lair and learn new moves in each level which slightly alter your play style and level design, that design keeps you interested to see whats next. In this bland piece of s*** you got from 1 level to the next in a bland hub world. There are no moves to unlock, there is nothing new to discover, nothing to hook you. This isn't even worth $5. I only bought this because I knew it looked awful and I wanted to see for myself, and it didn't disappoint. Refunding it now and never looking back. You couldn't pay me to play this game past 20 minutes.
Quantity over quality, a lot of level despite them feeling under baked. Pros: - Collectathon platformers are hard to come by. Cons: - Horrible hit boxes, you get hit constantly despite being the first to attack - Shortcuts unlocked, aren't permanent but only for that visit. - Some maps feel large and empty. - Buggy, glitchy platforms, animations & damage momentum boosts. - Lack of "coyote time" causing platforming to feel unfair when going even slightly fast.
An overall solid 3D platformer collectathon. Feels like it's from the era of Banjo-Kazooie and Spyro - for better and worse. It's definitely got some jank. Regardless, I enjoyed it.
A 3D platformer developed by a solo developer that took over a decade to create. Clive 'N' Wrench is an impressive effort, featuring an excellent variety of environments and a good sense of humour throughout. There are minor bugs with collision and sometimes animations would get stuck but I didn't have any of the big problems that other players have mentioned in the past. The game ran very well, loaded very quickly and I think the controls were very good, which is crucial for any platform game. The only aspect of the controls I think could have been improved was the swimming but I did get used to that fairly quickly and the game doesn't have too much swimming in it anyway. Perhaps Clive 'N' Wrench has been patched significantly since release but for me, the game worked well and I was able to overlook any minor problems that did pop up. Clive 'N' Wrench features a good amount of content, especially for those who try to get everything. Each of the various worlds feel reasonably big but they never drag on for too long and even though the gameplay loop never changes that much, there are enough curve-balls thrown in here and there to keep things fresh. The combat is a bit lacking. Each world has its own enemies and they all look excellent but they are all easily dispatched without much effort. Enemies here are merely a minor nuisance rather than a serious threat. To be fair though, I think combat isn't the main focus here anyway. The main gameplay revolves around exploration and platforming; and that part of the game is handled very well. The game is fairly easy for the most part but the difficulty does ramp up nicely with a few more challenging sections towards the end. Simplistic combat and bugs aside, Clive 'N' Wrench is a good time. It's an enjoyable love letter to the 3D platforming genre, which has been largely neglected in the last decade or so. It's so cool to see independent developers creating games like this and doing them well.
Great movement abilities that make interesting skips and movement techs possible... Well that's it, the rest of the game is damn garbage, from the art to the level design, the enemies, the hitboxes, the collectables, the platforming, the dialogue, the ost, the voice work, any type of sound, fonts... I'm not sure there's anything good in this and for the time it took to develop, this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insanely bad. I don't care that it was 1 guy. 1 guys have made pretty amazing stuff on this platform. No excuses
I am EXTREMELY divided on this game. On one hand it's a very amateurish, janky platformer with MANY strange design decisions and on the whole terrible boss fights; on the other it's a decidedly charming and well controlling collect-a-thon (a genre I have a massive soft spot for) which doesn't really demand too much time from you if you want to kinda vibe your way through it. I can't really think of how else to structure the review other than a list of pros and cons, because it literally feels like for every positive there is a negative to counterbalance it in some way, although not necessarily always to an equal degree. Pros: -A cool variety of levels with a bunch of stuff to collect -The playable characters control really smoothly; the moveset gives you what you'd expect (high jumps double jumps glides etc) and the levels give you big enough platforms to make use of how the movement feels. -Cute references to other platformers. -Good number of visual gags scattered throughout pretty much every level, which got a chuckle out of me more than once. -The visuals are colourful and nice. -On the whole, it feels good to go around collecting stuff. It helps that it has a little radar for the smaller collectables, which would have been a MASSIVE pain to collect 100% without. This might be a more personal positive for me as I just really vibe with this genre of game. Cons: -Anything combat related in this game is pretty awful. The attacks don't seem to give you any form of i-frames, meaning when you spin you're just kinda praying the enemy dies before you do. This game is clearly inspired by a lot of PS1 platformers, how do you not know to have the spin just fully beat out enemies like in Crash? Baffling. To add to this, pretty much every enemy is the same thing with a different model; get aggro'd and just run at you in a straight line as a large active hitbox, and never de aggro or have a cooldown or anything. The enemies that shoot don't have highlighted projectiles, so getting hit by them feels cheap. -Physics objects in levels that don't do anything? I'm sure it's to make the levels seem a bit more interactive, but a ball or a vase moving around at a lower frame rate to everything else just looks distracting, and I have no doubt makes this game run like ♥♥♥♥ on lower end systems and the Switch. -Missing a LOT of basic QoL stuff; why is there no camera sensitivity slider? -Boss fights range from awful to mid. I like some of the ideas, but some of them are literally played as jokes. -An overall feeling of lack of polish really permeates through this. It's hard to put into words, but once you play it you will understand. I am definitely interested to see if these devs do anything else because I think more time in the oven and this game would have been really great. As it stands it is very flawed, but if you like 3D collect-heavy platformers (particularly Spyro) I do think you will get a kick out of this. It's definitely not for everyone, so bear that in mind, but I can't say I didn't enjoy a fair amount of the time I spent with this game. (5/10)
A subtle love letter to all Banjo-Kazooie esque games. The Game itself has a few camera angle oddities, some button input issues, etc. BUT all in all, if you enjoy Banjo/Yooka-Laylee, etc; This game is for you. I picked it up on a Sale for 8$ US and have been loving every minute of it so far! Not sure if i missed the tutorial, but after trying out different buttons and such I've already been playing for a little over 3 hours with FEW to NO complaints! Very little Hand Holding, which is always a plus IMHO, and just enough to do in each World that you don't feel overwhelmed. All in all; 10/10 Recommend if you enjoy titles this has clearly followed suit from !
I found Clive 'N Wrench a bit rough round the edges, janky and needing a bit of polish, but i still really enjoyed it! Nice character designs (I love Luigi Lucarelli's art!), some fun themed levels that are nicely designed, nice music, tons of things to collect, amusing puns and lots of little touches. Really enjoyable traversal moveset too - jumping around just feels good. Some animation and physics bugs and patches of unpolished visuals bring it down a little but it didnt stop me from having a great time in my 8 hours to completion. It was a more substantial game than i expected, and i'm continuing on post-game to collect all the stuff and unlock some secrets! If you can live with some of the rough patches, you'll have a good time with this fun mascot platformer. I'd love to see what a sequel could do with a bigger budget / team, but nontheless, Clive N' Wrench is an incredible achievement for such a small team! I even bought a 2nd copy as a gift for a friend to support the devs further!
