Game has 2 bad things about it. You play as a car. This limits control of character and require constant 2-4 button mashing to jump around. Physics are random. Ultra boost can launch you 50 meters in the air, 1 meter up or even down. After completing the story and collecting every golden bunny you get few more levels. They are tiny and challenging. Hat's are not required for 100%.
Good game, collect-a-thon, has interesting mechanics and is very fluid. This game is excellent, I am addicted to it. If there is one thing I will criticize is Morio's mind. What an awful level. I swear the devs should really revisit it if possible. It's so annoying and it completely kills the fun.
Yellow Taxi goes Vroom is a great platformer, perhaps one of the best released in recent times. The game sees you playing the titular Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom(yeah thats its actual name), which can dash, flip and backflip. The game is unique in the platformer genre as it does not have a jump button. The mechanics are unlocked pretty much at the start of the game, but it is through repeated use and practice that the player acquires the skill to maneuver the taxi through the most difficult sections of the game. I frequently found sections in the early game which frustrated me to no end, because I kept failing to maneuver preoperly. Only after I mastered the mechanics, and completed the story, I realized how easily I could do the earlier difficult sections. For players who are looking to just finish the story, they will find the difficulty fairly, on the easier side. For others looking for a challenge, or trying to 100% the acheivements, some late game area can be really frustrating, but still pretty doable. I personally have perfected the game and found only 5-6 of such sections(half of them were in Mosk's Rocket, the end-game area). Coming to the aesthetics, the whole game is going for the N64 era style. Mario 64 and Crazy Taxi influence is obvious with a glance at the store page. Crash Bandicoot, Psychonauts and Katamari Damacy influence can also be felt if you've played any of these games. The dialogue parodies pop culture references and other games, and also does not take itself too seriously. The soundtrack is probably the highlight of the game, it perfectly evokes the nostalgic vibe the game is going for. The game also has many easter eggs and out of bound secrets for skilled players to find(I found one in the final area of the game by glitching through a painting). I would highly recommend this game for lovers of the genre, but also to fans of retro gaming in general.
May be one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played. Extremely charming and manic. Gameplay is super fun. It's like Mario Sunshine but you're a car. 9/10.
I liked Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom. I didn't *love* it though, and that's a bit of a problem for platformers. There's little issues in it that nag at you, like the inconsistencies in some of the mechanics--the super boost especially, but even going off ramps feels like a guessing game of "will the game let you launch forward how you want?" The fact that the backflip gives you more travel distance than a front flip is especially weird, and much of the mechanics don't feel like they're explained properly. I'm all for games not handholding you but not when it comes to core mechanics that are downright required to get some of the collectables. The first...half, I want to say, of this game feels great. It's got a breakneck speed to it, with a lot of crazy jumps and characters thrown your way. But after the first boss it starts to feel a little long in the tooth and sometimes punishing for no real reason, and about when I reached the last boss I ran out of patience. Huge jumps over instant-death acid pits is not my idea of fun, honestly. This is one of those times I wish Steam had a neutral option because I did genuinely enjoy half this game. It's just a shame about the other half. I'm not going to give it a negative score however as I do think there's a good game in here, especially for people looking for a challenging platformer. It's fun, sometimes! It's cute and zany the whole way. But it would've gone and removed a level or two and fine-tuned the mechanics just a bit more. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel that cleans up the mechanics and gives it more of a polish.
it's fine 7/10
I have zero nostalgia for the era and genre this game evokes, and I can still enjoy it! I love the depth of the movement. I really like the self-leveling system of collectathons, because you can explore an area and get as many gears as you want. But you don't have to catch them all; once you know the next area is available, you can keep exploring or move on. However I do not plan on finishing this. I got to an area (dreamland) that was extremely difficult, annoying, not fun at all. Videogames escalate difficulty since forever, and I can't even tell if the curve is off here. What I can tell you is that I am too old to put any more effort into replaying a section enough times to beat it. And the game didn't exactly earn points in any other department other than fun gameplay. There is no story or interesting world to engage with; it's just bright colors and whacky humor designed for kids. Speaking of kids, my five year old didn't like it that much either. And it's way too hard for him anyway. He played for about an hour. So I'm done with it. Enjoyed my time while it lasted. Don't really care to see how it ends. In fact, I don't even remember what the plot was and I just closed it.
vroom vroom
Went vroom
Its literally Super Mario 64 but it took 5 times the safe amount of caffeine and I love it I do think that they could have taught the controls a little better because I didnt know you could super boost until I found out how to do it elsewhere
