As a subscriber of Playboy for decades now, I approve of any game that has a bunny in it. I see bunny I purchase. Looks like the nesquik Bunny and curious George finally teamed up. My wife’s boyfriend says it looks like Curious George in Copyright Infringement. Nesquik Rabbit + Curious George go on a buggy and tedious adventure albeit with very enjoyable platforming movement mechanics Yeah Furrys!!!! I'm just worried about all the furry porn that this game will inspire burning my eyes when I inevitably look for it online. This would have been an average video game twenty years ago. I actually really enjoyed my time with the game. It's not anything ground breaking but it's a great mix of Spyro style gameplay (11 worlds, each with their own set of collectibles), with some Jak & Daxter style movement (though a bit jankier). Just like Spyro, there's an emphasis on exploration and collecting in the game, with each level having stop watches, ancient stones, and keys, with some secondary collectibles for specific NPCs per level. Each NPC has some sort of problem you'll need to solve, and will reward you with an ancient stone. My favourite thing about the game is both the diversity of levels, both thematically and in terms of gameplay (some are more linear, some are more open with interiors etc.). There's 11 worlds and I only felt one or two of them were similar to one another. The same thing applies to the boss fights, there's 11+ boss fights, with no two of them being the same. Some of the boss fights are traditional platformer boss fights, some are obstacle courses, some of them do other cool things that I'm not spoiling. I also found myself really liking the movement, which I initially felt was a bit too floaty, but got used to pretty quickly. Unlike a lot of other platformers, you can cover great distances in a super short period of time in this game, combine that with the verticality of the levels and you've got some super fun platforming. The world and characters are cute, the game is actually REALLY funny sometimes and the platforming was a lot of fun. Clive has a sprint button that allows him to speed around and it makes everything feel fast paced and fun. You have a lot of room to correct mistakes and you can travel great distances in no time at all thanks to your sprint and hover moves. It makes messing up a jump and the collectathon go down smooth since it's never a hassle to get back on track or pick up all the items you need. Anyhow, I think with a game like this and it's cartoony visuals that are clearly meant to be reminiscent of late 90s/early 2000s games, the hit in visuals isn't much of a noticeable casuality aside from some sections having draw distance fog. For the most part, it still looks great and it avoids that blurry, pixelated look thats common in some platformers. Honestly I thought it was great, just like with Yooka-Laylee a lot of the issues with it are things that I actually enjoy because it makes me feel like I'm playing a game from my childhood. Again it reminds me the most of Spyro. As a big fan of platformers, I had fun, despite it's flaws. I certainly noticed the "rough edges" but thoroughly enjoyed the game. While it got mixed reviews, I for one had a great time with it. It's a very charming throwback 3D platformer with some really superb movement. Most of the issues and negative reviews lean toward the technical. I played on a high end PC and had no issues. There are some issues here and there and the boss fight in the pirate section I absolutely hated but overall, it's given me hours of enjoyment. The characters themselves are one dimensional but the little vignettes can be funny, clearly influenced by Looney Tunes. It is janky, but I really liked it. If you like Yooka Laylee, I don’t see why you wouldn’t like this as well! 8/10
After over a decade of work, it's clear Clive ‘n’ Wrench was made by a developer who's passionate and a huge fan of the old school mascot platformers like Banjo Kazooie and Spyro the Dragon. Unfortunately, it's also clear that a lot of the game was mostly made by one guy. The animations are stiff and lack that polish, character animations become choppy if they're moving too fast, objects tend to pop in and out at a distance, and there are a handful of glitches that can pull you out of it. HOWEVER, the game runs and there’s an ending to play to. Now maybe that doesn't hold much weight for you if you've been raised on high budget console games that have been tested to perfection and are almost guaranteed to run when you put the disc in. I've played and loved those games too. But I've also played the hobbyist indie titles, the games that never make it out of that beta stage and the developer gave up on it after working on it alone for three years. Because video game development takes a lot of effort. When any project like this is finally finished after several years, it’s because there’s usually one crazy wacko at the helm who’s crazy enough and passionate enough spend literal years of their time to get the job done. I watched Clive and Wrench get worked on all these years, got excited as the levels were shown off and the characters were teased. And despite its flaws, I’m happy to finally see it released and hope to see more sequels to come! Bottom line, this game was made with love, but probably not worth the full retail price. If you see it drop below $10 and you want 10 hours of a bright mascot platformer with interesting character design and fun jumping mechanics, then buy it.
I wish there was a "meh" recommendation option. I love collectathon 3D platform games. This one is just buggy, and the monkey (Wrench, get it?) is so uncanny and bizarre looking. I WANT to love it, I want to enjoy it. I will try to play the game to completion because I've started it, I will not aim for 100% completion because it's agonising, but there are so many problems, getting stuck in the body slam pose and gliding through the level, clipping on random things in the environment, or even falling through the environment... the music is "fine" but sometimes it just stops or it will EXPLODE out of no where. The humour is kind of like Banjo Kazooie, but the characters have that terrifying uncanny look to them. I did enjoy the boss fights I've played so far, I also like that you get a nice hat that fits the world you're visiting. I just kind of expected more and that makes me sad. So whilst I can't recommend, I'm not saying never touch it, if it goes on sale and you like 3D platform collecting games by all means, but don't get your hopes up. I am sorry but after 6 hours now. I cannot do anymore... it's one big bug... sad times.
I would probably recommend this to 3d platformer fan, when it is on sale. i definitively would not recommend it at full price though. There are quite a few issues that i can see why some people might dislike, the hitbox when attacking are pretty messy, The camera turn really slowly, it turn so slow some people have made a mod to fix it. Quite a few obstacle can just be skipped completly (which imo isnt necessarly a bad thing). I also had to go into my savefile cause the game said i had everything but showed 9279/9280 coins. Despite that and probably a few other issues, i enjoyed my time with the game, although the formula of most level were a bit repetitive.
the game runs like sh*t on a steam deck
i didn't knew that you lost all your objective collectibles if you take the refrigerator so i have to backtrack all the first level, i'm not gonna do that i'm gonna ask for a refund
i cannot recommend this game enough. while it has its flaws, i find it to be something you can overlook when you take into consideration that a majority of the game was made by one guy. the game is full of very clear passion for the project, its clear that the developer wanted to make an amazing game much like the 90s platformers many grew up loving. the collectibles are very well distributed across the levels, and the music in each level is just fantastic. as mentioned, it does have its flaws, the controls are not perfect, clive does not always control as you want him to, character models glitch out and you can get stuck on invisible walls more often than id prefer. the boss battles are also very unmemorable. most of the bosses you dont fight at all, and while i especially found that charming with the mantis boss, it also leaves me wondering what the point of the bosses was, when you dont get to fight them most of the time. all in all, the flaws i find with it, i can excuse to the fact that its one very passionate guy behind the game. if you are willing to look past this, to get used to controls that can be a bit rough at times, then i cant recommend this game enough. the amount of detail, references to other cartoony platformers, clear inspiration from them, i cant help but smile every time i play it.
The game is... fine? Maybe that is too generous. There are elements of a good game here, and there are areas where there is some great attention to detail, but the base experience is more tedious than fun. Pros: Changing costumes for each world is cute and a really nice touch. When the controls work, it can feel good to speed through the levels. Verticality is dealt with really well. Some of the boss design is good. There is some real charm, with a couple of the bosses in particular standing out. Cons: Graphics are inconsistent and flicker a great deal even on a good pc. Frame rate is inconsistent. Levels are vast and lose their lustre long before they end. Hit boxes are inconsistent, and I fell through the level multiple times. There are far too many collectibles. Having 1000 pocket watches in one level means that they are tiny and hard to parse. This with the poor hit detection makes collecting a chore. The game is more bug than game. i.e. You get caught in the body slam animation and float around the world. Nonsensical design: Horses on rooftops and on pillars in the middle of the ocean. Story and lore is so glossed over that it may not even be there at all. I've almost finished the game as of writing this and I could not tell you which one is Clive and which one is Wrench. This game wasn't fun. It wasn't unplayable, and if it ran well it would be mediocre. But the performance issues are so bad, that unless you're the developer, I can't see someone actually enjoying this experience. Play a Hat in Time instead.
An overall solid 3D platformer collectathon. Feels like it's from the era of Banjo-Kazooie and Spyro - for better and worse. It's definitely got some jank. Regardless, I enjoyed it.
