Looking at the achievements stats, 0,1% of all the players has gotten any achievement for finishing any campaign (there are a handful of different campaigns consisting of 5-8 missions). Now that says something. First off, the price is 10 Euro for a game that looks and behaves like it was released in the late 90's. There is nothing about the game that can justify to charge even 10 Euro for it. Sound, AI, graphics, game mechanics...all has been done better by games developed almost 20 years ago. The only saving grace the game has is the historical correctness, which I can't judge since I don't really care about that level of detail of the American civil war. Now, if your biggest interest is the battles of the American civil war, then you might find this very interesting. A pet pevee of mine is also when people can't tell the difference between strategy (which this claims to be) and tactics (which this is all about). Strategy in a game is stuff like recruiting units, carrying over units between missions, developing your army or lands in some direction. Civil War: 1863 doesn't have anything like that, it's merely a selection of set situations on battle maps.
NOTE: I DID PAY FOR THIS GAME Overall 4/10 PROS: + It runs + Many scenarios CONS: - it uses the same mechanics as the Tanks series but in this context they don't work - some buggy behavior - graphics are really poor - many scenarios, complete lack of variety
Klassisches Stein-Schere-Papier Prinzip. Trocken, etwas staubig, einfache Grafik, dafür solide und klassisch. Ein klassisches Hexfeld-Nischenspiel für PC-Strategen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3htiVrGPvVI
This feels exactly the same as the other games by this company that I have bought. Same game with different graphics. No scenario looks or feels like anything from the Civil War. It would have probably felt better if it was small unit tactics, as opposed the "Civil War 1863" Everything just stands one or more hexes away and blasts away. maps are not big enough to make it feel like the game advertised. A very poor effort.
Just like 1861 and 1862. Same game I'm playing here.
In my opinion, this game and others by this developer - Hexwar Games - got a bad rap from many reviewers. First of all, comparing it to a real time strategy game is apples and oranges. Ultimate General may just be a great game, but rts isn't for everyone, or doesn't have to be every time you want to play a game. I like turn based hex games! Other games of this style and genre may be more historically accurate and more complex, but again, it's apples and oranges. This game is a little on the casual side, and it definitely isn't a real battle simulator. But sometimes I just want to charge those cannons or outflank that line, without feeling like I need a Ph.D. in military history just to play a game. Every tree may not be in the right place, but that's OK with me. I sunk over 50 hours into this game and I enjoyed every bit of it. I only played the game on medium (of 3 levels) difficulty, and I only played as the Union, so the game offers future replay ability. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. I also own and played Civil War: 1861 - no idea why i skipped 1862, but I will go back for it. I also recently took advantage of a big sale here on steam to buy 2 more Hexwar Games titles - Civil War: Bull Run 1861 and Civil War: Gettysburg. Rebs be warned, I am a battle hardened Hexwar veteran, and I'm coming to run you off the map. In a nut shell, whatever this game isn't, it is a lot of casual fun and I recommend it for those looking for this particular brand of apple.
Once again, like this game series twin brother "tank battles: insert title here" all these "civil war: insert title here" games are all the same, right down to the tutorial. There is very very little differences in these games as far as the look, sound, and play. The only differences is the setting/theme based on the subtitle. All of these civil war and tank battles could of been packed into one game especially since each game is only 100 to 400 mb big and all play the same. But no, greed is the only explanation for releasing this game as 10 different titles. Come on. All that being said it is a fun game to play but each civil war game and tank battle game are all the same game, literally. Just pick one and there you go. So again, like my tank battle reviews, im just going to do what the game developers did and copy and paste my review for each game.
This game felt dated and difficult to play for dumb reasons. There are people who can probably tell you better than I about the design flaws in coding or whatever but from gameplay value there are much better options out there for a civil war era game designed around RTS / strategy. The achievements are bugged in it as well - you fulfil the criteria for them and they never drop. Game has no support anymore - no shock there really as its old. Save your money and search for more modern and playable civil war era games is my advice - shame as the game was initially very appealing to me.
As the title states, deals with the pivotal year of the American Civil War. Gameplay is as most HexWars games. Decent array of scenarios. If you are comfortable with HexWars style, recommended. Also, should note that I believe this is the first of the series to be published.
