great game, kitties, platformer, nice music, very diverse level designs and game mechanics
In this platformer, you play as a cat that can shift between two colors, black and white while interacting with color-specific elements in the game that require swapping between these colors. I thought the idea of Schrödinger's cat as a mechanic is a clever way to add some puzzle elements. It's recommended you use a controller for this one. It was a bit tricky with a mouse and keyboard to time color swapping. It's a cute and enjoyable game, worth picking up.
From the terribly shallow surface this game may seem like just another pixelated indie platformer, but underneath the basic presentation is a gleaming treasure trove of brilliantly-made levels that feature intuitive layouts, fun level gimmicks, a surprising amount of charm and theming, and (most importantly) tight, satisfying platforming. Switching between black and white is such a simple mechanic to base the entire game around, but Cat Box Paradox manages to make full, extensive use of it, resulting in later levels feeling like a brilliant dance of frantic colour-switching splendor. It's extremely impressive to see just how much mileage is gotten out of this one simple mechanic. Ontop of the confident simplicity of the levels themselves is also a few extra challenges, mainly completing the level without getting damaged once (which is simple but genuinely hard to do sometimes), and collecting the elusive Mons. There's only one in each stage, but they're hidden in genuinely clever spots that make for fun and challenging detours. And to fully complete a level, you'll have to do both at once, and despite all the frustrating hiccups that you can make, I never feel mad about replaying stages to perfect them when the stages themselves are so well-built and fun. In conclusion, the reviews don't lie. This is seriously a hidden indie GEM, and while it can be recommended to just about anyone who likes platformers, I think die-hard enjoyers of the genre will get the biggest kick out of the ingenuity and challenges of this one. An amazing cat game 9 out of 10!! If you ask why 9, its because the restart button wasn't at the second option on menu, so every time i wanted to restart the game, i muted the music of the game and it was a little anoying... But in general, just a great game and you should play it!
fun
Excellent platformer with satisfying controls and physics. Its central gimmick is explored in fun, creative ways, across about 80 levels. I had a great time 100%ing it, which took me about 9 hours. The game never felt repetitive, and kept introducing new concepts and fun level design until the end. While I received the game as a gift, I would expect to pay $10-12 for a game this polished, and I think it's a great value for the current price point. Cat Box Paradox strikes the balance of "challenging, yet fair" better than a lot of challenge platformers I've played. I never thought my deaths were caused by the level design, and care was taken to soften a couple things that could have been unnecessarily challenging or strict, such as timing leeway on a rhythm-based section, or checkpoints preserving the status of your "haven't been hit" achievement in longer levels. General notes: - The previously-mentioned rhythm sections are accompanied by solid music with a great beat. - When you die, you respawn quickly. - The controls can be remapped. - There's a co-op mode that, while I didn't have anyone to play it with, seems like it could be some chaotic fun. - Wearing a large hat WILL increase your hitbox. - Eligibility for the "flawless" badge in a level is indicated by a red heart in the header, and is reset after dying. - Secret "Muon" collectibles are hidden in satisfying places, and a level tracks each of its achievement badges separately (don't need all collectibles + Muon + no damage + co-op all in a single run)
I'm having a ton of fun with Cat Box Paradox, the screenshots don't do it justice. Fun for the whole family although the kids will probably find it a bit challenging - requires fast thinking and reflexes! Simple concept but creative delivery makes this an exceptional platformer. Cat Box Paradox is a deceptively simple platformer with only one core mechanic but a range of dynamic environments and traps that allow for tons of variety. BIg game, ~70 levels! Cute cat, very fun! One of the best 2d platformers i have ever played. A must play for only 6 dollars. Don't sleep on this hidden indie gem
I had so much fun with this one! I got to playing it after the dev saw me streaming platformers and asked my to try out his game. Tbh, I was a bit skeptical at first, but that quickly changed. First thing you notice with platformers are if the controls are good, and they are! Physics are just instantly comfortable, and, for example, walljumps are timed exactly as they should be. The mechanics are simple enough, but the devs added so many variations that it always feels fresh and challenging. The graphics are just great pixelart and you can notice the effort put into it. But one of the greatest things about this game has got to be the level design. The way you progress and learn new mechanics, the gradual build-up of difficulty, the insane amount of variations they come up with for such simple mechanics... It really is just top notch! Very glad I got to play this game!
