Short version: 63%
Black Rainbow is a mostly storyless casual adventure game (but not a hidden object game), in which we spend a few hours running around in a beautiful scenery collecting junk with the sole purpose of getting more junk. Despite this, it is quite enjoyable, especially for a lazy afternoon.
Long version:
While Steam store says Black Rainbow is a hidden object game, it has no hidden object elements whatsoever: this is strictly a casual first-person point ‘n’ click adventure. The biggest strength of Black Rainbow is that it is an incredibly simplified, but fun scavenger hunt. We spend the entire game looking for random objects either to find more objects or to start some puzzle. While this may sound repetitive and boring, this simple nature and the great puzzle design result in a fun and easy time-waster. The game, technically, has a story. Only technically, because it has no real start or conclusion, we just know that we need to thwart a generic evil force, after which the game simply stops. This means that you will almost surely forget about its existence fast, but for what it is worth, Black Rainbow is pleasant enough to recommend to any casual gamer.
Awful game. Not a Hidden Object game at all- a Point & Click game with hidden collectibles and puzzle pieces you have to run around picking up. You have to play it twice to get the final achievement (Finish the game- any mode *except Challenge Mode* or Finish the game in Challenge Mode.) And honestly- it's not fun or interesting enough to play twice. One achievement will remain locked. The story is bad, really bad. The game freezes and locks up at times, for no apparent reason (no crash logs or error reports generated). I played on a fairly beefy rig- Windows 10 64 bit, i9 11900K, RTX 3080 Ti, 32 GB RAM. The game does not stutter- it just locks up during or after some interactions, and I had to shut it down via Task Manager since the game was unresponsive and all buttons because unclickable. Graphics are pretty bad, animations are pretty bad. Voice acting sounds like they paid random people off the street with an offer of a free lunch if they read some lines, and then told them after they got them in a locked room that it was going to be 3 day old KFC with cold mashed potatoes and no gravy. Accessibility First- do not launch the game with headphones on. The first screen is incredibly loud, with no way to turn the volume down. Game volume can be set once you get to the main menu screen, and all voice acting is also shown in text. No UI or Text Scaling, Odd fonts that may be difficult for some to read. No colorblindness mode- several puzzles are color-coded (red/ green/ blue/ yellow) and system color-blindness settings may or may not help. Quite a few scenes will be tough for people with certain forms of color-blindness. Many of the puzzles are not really logical- and the puzzle descriptions are really vague for some of them. Which leaves many of them being trial and error, and rather annoying ones. Many require fast clicking and perfect timing- not great for anyone with slowed reflexes or arthritis. ********************************************************************************************* I got this game years ago in some Hidden Object game bundle in a Steam Key store- likely IndieGala or Bundle Stars (Fanatical). I couldn't tell you what I paid for it, but whatever it was- it was too much. Awful game. Avoid.
I got this game in a hidden object bundle. As many people before, I tell you now: IT IS NO HOG!!!! It is more like a point and click, but, unfortunately, not one of the good ones. The opinions in the case of this game were seperated when I read them. I, for myself, pretty much like point and click, so I thought, the other user just overreacted. Sorry to tell you, they didn't. It is the first time, I was thinking of quitting a game. To the game: It is the usual story. You are the only one, who can rescue the world. Unfortunately, no one tells you why or why you are in the rainforest... The story itself coul've been a good idea but the making of is not good, really not good... It is as if someone tells you a race begins and the next information is the winner. It is too fast. Therefore the gameplay is pretty slow. You just go back and back and and back. Not always with sence in it. Honestly, I'm not sure, if all the minigames were good because I didn't understand every game. The introducion was in most cases a riddle itself. Sometimes it didn't even work if you play with a notebook. So, all in one, I can't recommend this game.
In Black Rainbow we play the role of Helen, a young woman who was staying in a small village in the amazons, until one night, fire arrows covered the skies, and she had to flee. Only to find herself the chosen one in a prophecy to save the world, or face extinction, such as many other civilizations around the globe. The game plays exactly like your traditional adventure game, using the same mechanics we've seen dozens of times in Hidden Object games, but this time without the "Hidden Objects", which makes it a Point & Click. (I guess?!) The puzzles are really basic and easy, and this is fantastic for the casual young gamers who just start their journey in these adventures. Those looking for a challenge, don't bother looking. Changing difficulty settings don't help either, as only removes hints and tips, as you would expect! The player adventures into the deep jungle and the more we advance, the more we enter the underworld. Helen must save the humanity, and as far as the story goes, it's simple and reasonable enjoyable, with some good ideas. Visually, it matches the basic storyline, it's good, but not great. It's not the best atmospherically, but it does create a really good ambient surrounding the native rituals and puzzles around it. From deep Amazonian sacred temples, to a city above clouds, and even underwater, we must find clues and special artifacts to defeat the ultimate evil that has been possessing the native villagers. To help, a few NPC's join in nice conversations, to give you some extra hints. Not that you could need any... There are no surprises when comes to the whole game, but it's a nice short adventure for anyone who has a few hours to spend, or enjoys adventures in general. In technical terms, we don't get ourselfs any treat, but it's nice to see wide resolution games none the less. Although there is no custom resolution, the game runs natively at 720p, but anyone can scale to whatever resolution the player sees fit. As for design, it's just like your traditional 2D that gives a fantastic impression of 3D, many times using CGI for object movements. With good and vibrant colors, they are nice assets, in which Cateia Games have been improving in that area. This was one of their first games after all. Overall Black Rainbow is a nice and simple Point & Click game, that tries to take you into a fantastic journey through South America. 5/10
.
I rarely put thumbs down for a game but... Even if it's not that bad, i can't really recommend this game :-( For an adventure game released in 2014 it's not really good. Everything is average: the graphics, the game mechanics, the story. Maybe some hidden objects scenes would have added something, i don't know. You don't feel involved in the story that mixes too many things together, so you finally end moving on the map going to the next shown point to do some action. 4/10 for me & thumbs down :-(
