this game is for people interested in dark, crass humor. [*]shouldn't laugh at that i guess - the determining point of your enjoyment of this game is whether or not you enjoy the dev's style of humor, which explores dark and serious subjects. if you like the trailer, you will probably like the story and humor delivery of the game just fine.

this game isn't for people looking for horror, environmental storytelling, or deeper social commentary. [*]who's afraid of the big bad spoon ? - there is nothing scary to this game, and while there was plenty of opportunity to put horror into it, there simply isn't any. i found this very disappointing, and would have probably liked the game a bit better if i didn't go into it anticipating some degree of horror. there is some mild gore and disturbing subject matter, but it never feels serious in any way due to the abundance of humor. [*]i've seen that before - a key selling factor of this game is its bizarre and humorous art. unfortunately, the same 3 pieces are repeated for almost the entirety of the work. there is a 'humorous' memo explaining why, but it ultimately feels like an excuse to not have delivered a better experience. had the dev put more of these art pieces throughout the game or done something meaningful with the other decorations instead of including the tedious puzzle elements, the game would be significantly better. [*]can i interest you in a minigame ? - there are a few minigames and puzzles to this. unfortunately, they are all absurdly easy time-wasters that have nothing whatsoever to do with the plot. the first puzzle with the
phone
is the most fun to solve and delivers a solid
jump scare
in the process. sadly, this is the peak of the game's adventure.

how did i like it ? i don't like to leave negative reviews on indie games, but i can't say i enjoyed my time in bucket detective. the dev has a fine sense of humor (mostly), but when it comes to creating puzzles, alternate endings, or even simply populating the game with the art you expect from the teasers, the effort just wasn't put in. despite multiple endings, there are really only 3 core variants, and i wasn't impressed with any of them. i'd have rather the art time put into the alternate endings fit into the picture frames that were showing me the same illustrations a dozen times, or even just added to the labels of more offensively-titled books. the minigame padding was also rather unfortunate. i think this dev has potential, but it wasn't realized in this title.
A grotesque and wonderful experience that deals with themes that are not often addressed in games. Something that will be kicking around in my head long after I write this review. Highly recommended for those who are looking for unique short experiences.
Bucket Detective is a jarring game. It’ll make you laugh on occasion also, but the game is worlds better at priming queasiness and discomfort. Compared to the developers previous game (The Static Speaks My Name), Bucket Detective feels like a much more cohesive idea. Not just in length, but in story feeling and overall vibe.
LIFE IS GOOD. LIFE IS GOOD: - DAVID DAVIDS 2) BUCKET DETECTIVE *SLICE*
I stumbled upon "the static speaks my name" the other day and decided to play it again since I remembered liking it back in 2015. It was a pleasant adventure again, and I saw the dev had another game. Static is free, Bucket is not. And that may be the biggest drawback, even at $1. I bought it and finished it in less than an hour (multiple endings and all that, first playthrough is 30mn). I don't mind that it's short. It's just that those minutes are not that entertaining. The visuals are nice, the themes are more sexual than anything, which was a bit weird sometimes, but above all, the gameplay is not captivating at all. You walk through corridors and "solve" 3/4 very simple puzzles. There's an extradiegetic narration that is told by someone with a third grader's understanding of English. Why? Then there's an autodiegetic narrator, which is fine. It does feel like the dev had a vision in mind, but I don't know if he really put it into motion (and code). One flaw sums up the game perfectly: you can't run. In a game where all you have to do is press W, and can get achievements through exploration, why not allow me to run?
It consists of very basic walking simulator gameplay, the selling-point is that it is supposed to be a bizarre game with dark comedy. I found it very lackluster, non of the comedy was even slightly funny, it feels so forced and honestly I can't imagine anyone that is into adulthood finding any of it that funny. Apparently the dev thought it would just be funny by default to mention 'dark' things or bad things, but that's not how jokes work no matter if it's a dark joke or not. It's not automatically 'dark comedy' because it mentioned something dark or something a bit out there. A good dark joke isn't funny purely because it mentions a taboo subject, it still has to be an actual good joke. Louis C.K's "But Maybe..." bit is a dark joke/routine that works, it is a formatted and well formulated joke routine, this game assumes you'll find "And now he had to sacrifice a finger to open the door" funny. I'm left thinking 'Okay... and? The punchline please?' I can only describe it as a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes dark comedy work, and a bit childish and silly. The bizarre-factor I was after was only slightly itched by the nice art hanging on the walls and during 1 of the objective phases. It just didn't vibe with me. It feels cheap and I think it lacks a lot of effort, it feels like an outline that is incomplete. The first game I have ever played that gave me a choice to do something so morally repugnant, that I couldn't even do it in game. 9/10.
Weird, absurd little game
It’s a weird and absurd little game, which I liked. I see why it is not for everyone: I personally didn’t enjoy most of the sex-related jokes (of which there are many), but for the most part - I liked the jokes and the story absurdity. I completed all endings in just under one hour, 4 out of 5 - myself, the remaining one - with a direction from a walkthrough, and it was a short fun experience.
