PvP with 4 players. Online is down. Local playable. After 10 minutes you pretty much done with the game.
Nobody will read my review so I Will Eat 1 Tablespoon of Sugar For Every Like this gets.
Don't spend your money on this game - there is nothing of worth here since the dev appears to have left with no server for players.
Warning: Dead PVP Game This game has no single player content, and no playable PvP servers. There is no functioning PvP population, it's a dead game, and cannot be played online.
Super Treasure Arena is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooter/brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This console (Switch) ported 2D retro pixel brawler leaves us a question... who abandoned it first, the players, or the developers? The devs pulled the plug on their online servers, and the only "single player" option is botmatching, which nobody would ever want to do with such a shallow game. And yeah, we could pretend in unicorns, fairies and local multiplayer, but we know none of that is real (the SteamDB player counts don't lie). As a game this is pretty bad, ugly pixel art, top down console peasant view, you just do lightweight ARPG bashing of the enemy bots and a couple of NPC mobs, carry some gold around... boring, shallow, repetitive, rejected... I can certainly see why nobody was interested in the game. The focus of the game is pure PvP, there's no single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the game. The vast majority of PvP-only games fail because they don't "go viral", and without players, or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Super Treasure Arena didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for winning a game, trivial to get, but less than 11 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 11 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the almost scam-like price of $8 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like the "Tomb Raider" remake, "This War of Mine" or "Batman: Arkham Origins". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

IMPORTANT:

Lots of fun but VERY BRIEF and NO ONLINE PLAY. Overpriced for what you get. (Might be playable online via Steam Remote Play but I've never gotten that to work successfully yet.) Now, that I have that out of the way, I can recommend this because it -is- actually lots of fun. That's the key point, this game is a lot of fun. If it were fun but not -as- much fun as it is, taking all other aspects into account, I would have recommended against it.

SUMMARY:

A nice person gave me a copy. You will not be playing it with me because you CAN NOT play it with me! Once you figure the mechanics out the CPUs won't stand a chance. The controls take some getting used to but this is a good game if you plan on playing it LOCALLY with multiple controllers (maybe with your siblings, cousins, or niece or nephew or something). I could recommend it for that situation. It runs pretty well on low-end computers too. THERE IS NO ONLINE PLAY.

MAIN:

If you're one of my local irl friends, then you probably won't be reading this - you probably don't even have a Steam account. I do happen to know a few people who might enjoy playing this locally with me, though. If you're one of my online friends, don't think you'll be able to pick this up and play it with me, though; it just won't happen. Online Multiplayer is non-existent even though the developer tags for the game say that there is Online Multiplayer. The servers for the game are no longer hosted and what would have been better is if they'd allowed the players to host their own servers like certain -other- top-selling games available for personal computer. This isn't Pokemon or Animal Crossing where you have to worry about item duplication; therefore, there's no reason why they needed to NOT allow users to host the game server other than the stats marque which is irrelevant now anyways because no one is playing online - because they CAN'T. So, even if I really like this game (and I really like it quite a lot actually), I can not recommend that my online friends get it because it has NO ONLINE PLAY. Personally, IF I were able to play this online with my friends, I'd most definitely be recommending it to them. I really wanted to play this online with them. You can still play with the CPUs so this game isn't unplayable as it is but that's all that there is to it. It has no single-player minigames or story-campaign or anything. Only multiplayer mode - & the only reason that mode is playable as a single player is because of the CPUs. (You can also do a round by yourself without any CPUs but that's pretty pointless aside from learning the controls.) The only problem with that, and why it's no substitute for playing with real people is... Once you figure the mechanics out the CPUs won't stand a chance.

CONSOLE VERSION MIGHT BE BETTER (good luck getting all your friends to buy a console, lol):

Based off of what I've read, it MIGHT have online play on the console version (no guarantees), though, you may be finding yourself paying a subscription fee for online services in that case... (not to mention that it's not going to be worth it to buy a multi-hundred dollar console just to play this game, if you don't already have the console, which you might but your online friends (whether you met online or they just moved far away) may very well be in the situation where they'DON'T already have an expensive console to play this with you - AS WELL AS the fact that (personally) I'm more inclined to play a game like this online with my friends on the personal computer than on a console where I could play a "triple A" racing game or animal town building game with them instead & also prefer to use consoles for local play). For those reasons, the PC version is kind of like a bad port. (Which at any time they could make could by implementing that ONE change... but they probably won't...)

OTHER ISSUES & ADVICE:

Also, The game also tells me I can press F1 to review the control instructions during a battle - no, actually, that didn't work. Also, The game does not stop when someone pauses, local, online, or by yourself; this is probably preparing you for it to be that way online, where it makes most sense, by treating multiplayer with CPUs the same way. This isn't an issue but in local multiplayer, the pause screen covers the entire screen, so even if you're just popping in to turn down the sound effects volume, it can be used to effectively obscure the screen for all players. I'd say just ignore what is going on in the background when you pause to read the control instructions but I wasn't able to pause to read the control instructions for the previously mentioned reason that I couldn't get them to open during a match. Also, you drop your weapons when you die. It's not a big issue since weapons are super easy to get in this game but the best way to learn the controls is probably through trial an error - I'd recommend doing so on the Dungeon stage since it's easier to stay out of the line of enemies that will kill you (making you have to wait 5 seconds for a respawn) on the Dungeon stage.

CONCLUSION:

As part of a review, I'm obligated to point out: A nice person gave me a copy. I also have an obligation to point out to my friends: You will not be playing it with me because you CAN NOT play it with me! Unless they ever address the server issue (ideally by letting us host our own servers), only get this game if you're going to play it locally with someone.
Gets boring easily.
For whatever reason this game did not want to work with a controller. Pressing the attack button makes my character jump and the ability button does nothing. Clearly this is not acceptable, but unfortunately I took too long to try this game. I don't know whether mouse and keyboard will work, but that's not how I intended to play this, so I jut can't recommend this game.
Sorry, but this time coop only!
