The concept here has potential but the execution is lackluster
I expected Koei Tech to do something different with this jrpg but I just got atelier with no synthesis and better story. My review is based on having not played the original game and only beating blue reflection and second light. Overall I would say blue reflection is a mid game and second light is a major improvement in every aspect from the first game but still far from it's potential. Story Blue Reflection Story here is underwhelming in my opinion. The story is literally about farming emotion but the stories told to get these emotions are pretty basic, not fleshed out well and happen so quick to the point where I myself barely feel any emotion. If you can turn away from the execution, conceptually its a good story. The side content is pretty terrible and forgettable. Second Light Story is big improvement from the first game, I at least felt some emotion. The story itself is longer so there is room to explore each character and expand on their story. The story plays out more like a mystery compared to the first game where it's already clear what the end goal is. The side content in this game is significantly better then the first game, the dates are a lot more interesting and varied. Story Telling In my opinion the game would have been amazing if care was put into the story telling but sadly all you get is recycled poses and stiff animation. From what I can tell no scene got any form of mocap its all just reused poses and clever camera cuts which is a shame because for a game about emotion its hard to convey that through poses and stiff face expressions. Some of the poses are lackluster like for example crying, the character's eyes don't even get watery and there is barely any physical contact between the cast, the best you get is hand holding and out of both games there was only 3 hugs which I expected more. Overall story telling is a shame but at least from the first game to second light they do improve the amount of poses, like in second like there's like 3 different sitting poses compared to 1 in the first game. Gameplay loop Blue Reflection The gameplay loop was shallow and grindy, it closely resembles old atelier games. You don't have to kill enemies since all your skill points and level ups are gained from doing fetch quest, meaning you can't avoid it. The fetch quest are either kill x monster y times, or get this 1 material x times. Side quest give you points ranging from 10-50 with most of them giving 10 or 15 and when you reach a certain milestone you progress the main story. The game play loop becomes, do main story, game tells you to reach x points, you spam side quest until you reach the point threshold, continue main story and repeat. Points do carry over but at the end of the game you need 1000 points and you can do the math on how many side quest you will have to subject your self to. Second Light Second light is an improvement, for one you get exp from killing monsters now so you can't ignore them like the first game. There are less side quest and are easier to do, half the side quest are tied to the school project building mini game which passively gives you stats so there is strong incentive to do them. The dates are just as much as the first game but are spaced out better and in general are more engaging as the characters you date do make reference to the unfolding story. The gameplay loop closely resemble modern atelier games. Combat Blue Reflection Combats is your cookie cutter buff your team/debuff enemies and hit them with weakness. The game gives you way too many skills where some of the skills serve similar purpose to other skills. You do replenish hp and mana after a fight. Second Light A lot more engaging then the first game, instead of buff/debuff hit weakness its more about hitting weakness in burst windows. They also removed mana in favor of a system where you passively generate mana. A downside is you no longer replenish hp after a fight and early on healing is terrible to the point where you need 1 or 2 characters stuck on healing duty. Also crafting healing items is expensive so that isn't viable. Later on as you get stronger and get more healing potency this problem does go away. Conclusion The game has potential but is limited through its poor story telling and lack of innovation. Outside of this remake the original game's price is priced at AAA level and I expected a lot more at that price point. If the story delivery was better and if they used mocap and smoother animation I believe this game would have been amazing. If your okay with the poor execution and you can stomach a game that is essentially atelier but without the interesting synthesis system then I recommend this game.

persona but magical girls. its peak so far im only on the first game tho. writing could be a little better imo but peak
Blue Reflection is on point. The Story around Hinako was wonderful, i watched/read every dialogue, every single scene i could find and i had many heartbreaking moments. Its such an deep story and i totally love it, the way i got into the story until the plot twists hammered my soul.. thanks for that! The port works like a charm and also switching between games works great. I REALLY had a hard time giving this game a Good review just because of the Censorship - I got the feeling if something TOTALLY SEXUAL UNRELATED gets censored, the world of this genre is about to die. A smaaall piece of salt in form of fanservice is a must, if they take away even that.. nvm i wanna marry yuricchi

《BLUE REFLECTION:
《BLUE REFLECTION:
《BLUE REFLECTION:
《BLUE REFLECTION:
